I consider it soloing if the character took on the mob mano a mano at the time of combat. So botting multiple characters into the fight doesn't count but getting some buffs before the fight does.

it would depend, when i can't find a group during the late night, i log in 1 to 2 other characters withing group range and group fight the mob.

but other times. i just log in my high level characters a druid to dmg shild and a cleric to heal rez and temp, and my enchanter for kie or clerity, these 3 all above 50 now and i'd use them in the background to buff one character who does all the fighting ungrouped powerleveling but soloing. i don't have any account as a bot thought i never used any 3rd party program i just alt tab quick. i can run 5 accounts on my computer, but 4 is handleable.

i've just recantly noticed after 4 yrs of playing that the group range is not just 5 lvl's apart, but lvl/2+lvl+1 formula and now use my lvl 65 enchanter to power level my lvl 45+ characters. i group up and use my enchanter to do all the killing of blue white and yellow cons to the lvl 45+ and green to me so no agro.

i prefer to group and play with other players but i only get to play late night and with a few of the low population leaving to play the new servers grouping under lvl 60 is hard.

i also power evel because i have so many characters 32 above lvl 20. and 4 new accounts waiting to test out the new expansion characters and a few other rase class combo's i don't currently have.

yes a ton of money per month but i only have 4 active at one time. i like to get everything out of a game

solo = 1 or alone.

so NO a botted group is NOT soloing. it is grouping even if it is only one real person, there is more then 1 toon involved.

You cannot be soloing if you have 3 or 4 bots standing there waiting to buff your toon to the max before you wade in , and also cover your *** if you fail. It's just a group run by you.

Soloing is one character (not one player) versus the mob(s).

Perhaps your friend thinks that since it is a single player that he is soloing.

Edit: Your friend would be correct in saying that he boxed such and such mob.

I always considered soloing any tough mob to be a matter of pride, meaning you did it yourself. If you're getting insane buffs from multiple toons, regardless of whether they're yours or someone else's, or if you have a safety net from another character to ensure you win then you haven't soloed, especially if you're involving 4 characters in the fight. To solo means to defeat alone, not to beat a mob with the assistance of a bunch of other characters. I'm just switching over from EQOA as soon as my download finishes, and I remember a few people there who claimed to have soloed mobs ("because they had a good healer oog" and another who had people bloodgating and coming back to give him stacks of food to keep his health up. That's not soloing, lol.

Following up on Maldovar's comments...

Getting buffs from someone in my opinion is acceptable when discussing soloing. Most druids and such would get clarity back in the day before soloing those hill giants. Even now, with KEI and other buffs, I think that is part of soloing.

However...

Once the mob aggro'ed then soloing means no outside assistance. Also, soloing includes pulling the mob. By this I mean that the cleric that "solo'd" Vindi did not truely solo him. The cleric had help. Other people pulled, split and killed Vindi's guards so that the cleric could get Vindi solo. Sorry, but to say you solo'd Vindi means you dealt with the guards solo as well (where a monk could split them and kill them then get Vindi).

Sorry, I'm a purist, lol. I consider soloing to be based on your toon's skills and abilities, not your toon's skills and abilities and the buffs of as many other characters as you can get to beef you above and beyond what you're capable of. Just my personal opinion, but if you're going to have claimed to solo something, you should have done it yourself, not with the aid of others (whether it be buffing, pulling adds, taking the initial hit, etc). I don't know if anyone here has played EQOA, but I eventually wound up building a SK who soloed dreadaughts like nothing, mobs who used to tear inexperienced raid parties a new a*****e. On one occasion I went to solo Paraithor, and the sha with me buffed me, so I took off all my CR gear to compensate.

Again, just my opinion, but in my opinion, soloing means doing it yourself without help. guess that would cut the number of people who could have claimed to have done it on any given mob down badly, though...

I wouldn't go there Maldovar. If you take the standpoint that any buffs disqualify it as a solo, someone will take the next step and say you can't have used any gear or spells you got in a group or bough. And then if you got any experience in a group or had buffs while soloing for exp you sorta had some help from other players. And then if you looted stuff and sold it to a merchant once, well then the merchant helped you ...

NO AND THEN

I think a pretty standard 'solo' would be 1 toon with no outside assistance besides buffs that last long enough to get from PoK to the mob.

I think it is really simple : Buffed or unbuffed , if you did it completely alone then you soloed the mob.

If you take Maldovars argument to it's conclusion , then any equipment that increases any stat is a buff and therefore makes the encounter non-solo .

Sorry , any gear or buffs but all alone = solo

Whereas "alone" is one character (back to the point of this thread).

Great definitions of the word "solo"; however, I did not see one in there for "EQ-speak" or online roleplaying gaming terminology.

There can be some debate as to whether buffs from other characters pre-engaging count, but most will agree that soloing in EQ means one character, not one person.

When I "solo" it's by myself, one character. If I box one extra toon I say I "duo'd", etc.

Heheh, I never said it had to be done without any buffs, just with no outside buffs. When you solo something I always felt you were testing how well your character was built and equipped to work on its own. If your doing it with the aid of other characters, either directly or indirectly, then I don't consider it soloing, but again, that's just my opinion. :)
