Taken from Skill information here:

Quote:
Begging is an art only for the most patient adventurer. Beggars must be willing to be rebuffed, jeered, and even attacked at times. However, the persistant beggar can often score easy cash with no effort or other talent.

There are several good ways to practice your art. In each of these examples, the beggar is supplementing his begging income in other ways; begging doesn't pay the rent, so to speak. The first method is similar to the rogue's Pickpocket ability; while fighting a humanoid monster (one from whom you can successfully pickpocket/beg), turn attack off, beg, and then attack again, all in rapid succession. The second method is to find a place to beg and fish at the same time. Several places to do this are the lake in West Commonlands (beware of Dragoon Zytl!), the waterfall in Rivervale (beg from the young halfling), the docks in East Freeport and South Qeynos, etc. Finally, if you are a pet class, you can raise your skill by begging from your pet, although this can be somewhat demeaning right after he calls you Oh Great One. You can also beg from the boat while doing the tedious passage between continents.

Begging can provide you with easy unearned cash, but many of your targets will feel no sympathy for your poverty when you plead for coppers. In fact, they may even be so repulsed by you that they attack. It is a good idea to beg only from people that like you already, and to beg only from people that wouldn't be able to kill you, if it came down to that. Unlike many skills, begging will improve even when used on much weaker targets.

Do not expect to be given anything more than a copper until you have at least begun to master the skill (~50). Then you can start raking in the coppers, and even occasional silvers.

I remember having read a post quite a long time ago about raising one's begging skill by using a hotkey during fights like

/attack off
/beg
/attack on

I tried to do that, but it didn't work... Did they change the /beg action? How is everyone else raising the skill?

Morning Bbot,

I always used the "beg" hot button that was always there when I made a new toon. I found it under my skills section

Does /beg work? I don't see why you would have to attack someone in order to beg...

And this is by far the most useless skill in eq. Even at high levels of skill yoo only rake in a silver piece at best. Just go kill a few level 2 mobs and sell some of the rare loot they drop for gold...

There is at least one class that needs beg at some level to do their epic I believe.

You don't need to attack to beg but some used the above method to raise the beg skill while they were fighting. I'm not sure if that is/was the exact hot key. You might have to use the /doability(not sure of exact command) and put beg in a main hot key.

If you just want to raise the beg skill go atack a greenie mob, snare works nicely if you have it, and sit there and beg until the mob tires of trying to hit you. Reagro and /beg some more.

You can beg from 'friendly' NPC's also but they will usually attack you after several begs.

Exactly, for hot buttons you cannot use /beg. You need to put 'Beg' in your abilities menu and use:

/attack off
/doability (# for beg)
/attack on

Rogues do the same thing with pickpocket during fights and the classic:

/attack off
/doability (# for Hide)
/attack on

which will lower your aggro...

The begging skill will improve on green con mobs? Sure?

And moreover, begging really works on your own pet?

Yes begging works on green mobs and on pets.
I used beg a lot on my first toon, just to see what happened. I was killed by a merchant in Surefall, a guard in S Qeynos who I was amiable to, and a few other merchants/npcs who didnt like me asking for money. Hence the suggestion to beg from people who are lower level.
I learned at some time you could beg the boat ride, but that was fixed IIRC. (Or was it the fishing spot on the boats?)

Actually i thought they changed it so you can't beg from pets anymore, but not sure.

I used to beg from those little canoes. Not sure if that was changed.

But just this week I was in GFay and LFay begging green mobs. I just snare or agro and let them swing at me while I beg. So I know begging from green mobs still works.

And I too was surprised to get attacked buy a guard at Kelethen lift. I thought I had found a nifty way to raise begging on a freindly NPC. After 4 or 5 begs the two guards attacked me, lol. But if you switch guards, etc, you can get a whole copper now and then and they tell ya to go away.

A long time ago when I used to play a kiting druid I raised that Begging skill up to around 124ish. When I would kite mobs in Cobalt Scar they would usually turn and give up at the classic 19%. At that point Id just keep them dotted and sit in front of them begging. I never got any money begging those mobs, but it did get my skill up.

However even at 124ish I never begged more then 1 silver, and even then it was really rare.

It may have changed but I think the way it used to work is you could beg 1 time per your faction level before they attacked you. So if the mob was indifferent you could beg it 3 times before it attacked. Its been a long time but I am thinking thats how it worked.

sometimes you need a /pause in your hotket because it is too soon after you have turned attack off. I dont think you can skill up begging on a green mob.

I managed to get beg on my main to 200 but at best it's a gold or 2 every once in a while. AFAIK no quest or epic uses beg skill at all so it's probably second most useless, Disarm traps being #1 for many classes as they can't even raise that skill.
