I was wondering about that myself...
Will a 3rd party pick up EQ after SOE gives it up...? I guess if they can figure out a way to keep the costs down and the only way to do that is to stop expanding the game and just take care of existing issues.
They would still charge a monthly fee but it would be less then the $15.00 a month. Maybe back to $9.99 or something less then that. I have no idea of of what type on manpower (or womenpower) it takes to keep a few servers up and running....
If everquest entered a phase where extra development (patches, expansions) other then pure technical fixes, and only minimal staff was kept to administer it, the price could drop due to $9.99 or lower just to pay the staff fees and server cost. It depends if SOE wants to keep it around if the user population becomes low enough that the game doesn't generate sizeable revenue to support further development of future games, etc. If they did decide to keep it past this stage as a not-profit venture, and charged what was needed to keep it running, it would work pretty well once the user base becomes very low.
I dont suppose the end of Everquest will settle very well compared to other mmorpg, everquest is a strong componenet of the foundation of the mmorpg genre that is popular today.
