here's one incredibly good, awesome, technically genious way to keep EQ going indefinately...

ready?

stop charging a monthly fee.

rememeber when online games first came out and were free to play online? *joy*

Ok lets say EQ did come to an end what do you think will happen to the servers and the code ???? Do you think they would sell the rights to someone so they could keep it going?

I was wondering about that myself...

Will a 3rd party pick up EQ after SOE gives it up...? I guess if they can figure out a way to keep the costs down and the only way to do that is to stop expanding the game and just take care of existing issues.

They would still charge a monthly fee but it would be less then the $15.00 a month. Maybe back to $9.99 or something less then that. I have no idea of of what type on manpower (or womenpower) it takes to keep a few servers up and running....

Actually.

My first toon was started in Freeport. In order to re-live my first few minutes with eq, I would have to start a toon, name him Wanelorf, and try typing something with the letter "A" in it while standing in front of my guildmaster.

You atart to attack your Guildmaster.
Guildmaster crushes you for 350hp of damage.
LOADING.... Please Wait.

I learned very early that you must always make sure that you hit "enter" before typing something when talking to NPCs'...

I learned very quickly that you should move autoattack to a key that you don't use when typing things to NPC's.

Mine is 0 on the numberpad.

I would do a /shout in PoK and in general chat about this. I would try and get a big whoop *** session going in the big Arena. I think that would be a fun and social why to go out.

If everquest entered a phase where extra development (patches, expansions) other then pure technical fixes, and only minimal staff was kept to administer it, the price could drop due to $9.99 or lower just to pay the staff fees and server cost. It depends if SOE wants to keep it around if the user population becomes low enough that the game doesn't generate sizeable revenue to support further development of future games, etc. If they did decide to keep it past this stage as a not-profit venture, and charged what was needed to keep it running, it would work pretty well once the user base becomes very low.

I dont suppose the end of Everquest will settle very well compared to other mmorpg, everquest is a strong componenet of the foundation of the mmorpg genre that is popular today.

I dont think EQ will close down for atleast another ten years and probally longer then that.

It will dwindle down to point where SOE will stop putting out new exspansions but will keep 4 to 6 servers running. The game at that point may well start growing again as people embrace the Idea that EQ has a finish line. EQ would still be a massive amount of content but unlike today you could just keep chipping away at content and sooner are later be able to say you finished.

The current new content every 6 months is adding content to game faster then most current players are consuming it. This is one of reason people tend to burnout on EQ because they feel presure to try and keep up with game because if they dont they will fall farther and farther behind.

I also see SOE going back and turning most raid encounters in EQ to single group ecounters with maybe one are two raid mobs per exspansion at most until final 3 are 4 exspansions where they leave existing raid content in as final end game for players.

I dont see SOE ever letting someone else take over EQ the amount of maoney and time put into building EQ is simply to great to allow it to fall into someone elses hands. I do see SOE eventualy remakeing EQ into new game that has updated graphics but keeps existing EQ class quest and tradeskill systems in place. The only way someone other then SOE would get EQ is if they bought all of SOE to get it.

I think the point that everyones missing is that Sony is not stupid. I think when they realize that it will stop being proffitable they will do something to shift us into another Sony game (EQ2 maybe even EQ3). I would be ineterested to see sony in EQs final days play out the story that begins EQ2. A huge live cataclysm we could all watch. hell if they do it right i may just try EQ2 when that time comes.

Sony would not just announce EQs ending date then shut down the servers on said date. they are more cunning than that. Even if the population is down to nothing they would still make an attempt to keep them from going to the darkside (Blizzard).
