A) Will another game ultimately do in EQ...Vanguard perhaps?

B) Will technology just get too far ahead of the dinosaur coding disallowing newer units from being able to run the game?

C) Will it just dwindle away...the 16 servers become 8, the 8 become 4, the 4 become 2 until all that remains is one server run by a forgotten, half-crazed developer that controls the remaining peeps.

D) Will The Key finally be found to activate the portal that will allow all the faithful followers to finally leave mundania behind and live happily ever after as true Rangers, Ogres and Gnomes in the mythical, forgotten land of Norrath?

E) Other

I say C, but we won't get as low as 2 servers IMO. If it dwindles down to the point that subscriptions are no longer supporting development, support, and hosting costs, SOE may simply announce an end date and may also discontinue support until that date.

i've played eq for close to 3 years now, and i think you've played a lot longer elinda.

isn't this the sort of question that keeps coming up like "old world server"?

It hasn't come up for awhile - not since the whole WoW EQII release days, and this post was just finishing off the other questions about the end of an MMO.

You know I wonder how it will be accomplished? I mean when you buy a game you're guaranteed a virtual world to play it in. Can SOE or other game owners then close down a game and say sorry "your game you spent x amount of dollars on is no longer playable." You can't play this game as a stand alone so once the servers shut down your game is worthless.

Have other MMO's gone away? Do the owners give a time line. Say, they quit selling the game and all expansions and make some timeline that says you have 2 more years to get your moneys worth. Have any MMO's gone under prematurely and have had to reimburse people? I'm not familiar with any but I don't follow things too closely.

How do MMPORPG's die?

(I've only played about 3 years myself)

I completely understand what your saying Elinda, and am completely as clueless on the fate of other failed MMORPGS, its a whole different experience from having your standalone PC games or console games that are always there to be able to fire up when you get a old nostalgic urge to knock the dust off of em yet again...

...something that sadly wont always be there in the world of MMORPGs probably...

...though i do wonder about some of the truly devoted out there trying to start up servers of their own...especially considering SOE would have a lot less (maybe none at all) ground to get a lawyer after anyone doing so...

Be careful not to underestimate corporate legal departments. Long after Nintendo stopped making and selling the games for their original console, they went after sites hosting the ROMs that allowed you to download and play those obsolete games on your PC.

For what it's worth, there already is an emulated version of EQ called Shards of Dalaya which is free. You have to have EQ installed on your PC but you connect to their server. Zone names, item names, etc. have all been changed, and I would think if Sony could/would do something, they would already have this shut down. I know a few people who used to play EQ who now play this for the nostalgia feel before the progression servers were ever mentioned. It's a pretty decent set up (they even have their own magelo-type service on their site) but I never had that nostalgia feeling Smiley: tongue

Electronic Arts closed down Motor City Online and gave its users a copy of another online EA game.

Turbine, it seems, just gave its users a four month advance notice when they shut down Asheron's Call 2.

Rubies of Eventide nearly shut down and then went to a donation-based model with preference to server access given to those who ponied up. I don't see SOE following this model though.

That's all I could turn up -- not too many MMORPGs have shut down, surpisingly enough.

horizons came out and had 10 servers after a year down to 4 or 2. just 2 going now still bad population, but a company bought horizons to keep it going, and this last march announced an expansion coming.

i feel with such a great game like everquest if at any time if the game dies down to 4 servers soe could easily sell it to many of the rich out there. hey IGE alreasy owns 90% of the plat and best items and characters in the game. why not buy the rights to the game if soe chooses to let it go. there might not be any more expanions but the game can still be played.

i have 4 of 8 accounts active. every class going most lvl 20-40 . now with a new race coming i might open my 5th acount. i plan to have every class and race up to lvl 65 or75 90 100. in the next 3-4 years. i have a 1.6 year old son i hope toplay eq with when he's 5-7 yrs old

asheron's call 2 dieing shocked me a bit. i hated the game but loved the first asheron's call for 5 years, when i hurd it just left after selling the expansion i thought what the hell, all that money and time spent on the game waisted. i 'd be calling for a class action law suit to get the money back from expansion and the months playing the game. they should have just open sourced the game and let others run it.

Earth and Beyond had its budget reduced and then finally had its final sunset so to speak before everything went dark. There was advance notice.

As long as MxO and SWG are still being run by Sony, EQlive has nothing to fear.

IGE probably own 10% of the money and 0% of the best items. and maybe, maybe 0.1% of the charicters.

Other than that i agree with you post totally.

C in time,

However, Dungeons and Dragons ( the book and dice one ) has been around for like 30 years, granted EQ in few ways has the depth of old D&D, but basically the same thing..add new Modules or dungeons and people will keep playin.

This game is for the momment old computer friendly, which keeps people playing too, I think the graphics are fine, I mean if I put my xbox360 up with oblivion on, id say yes these graphics are kind of generic, but like in oblivion I lose the envirorment in search of exp or quests. I could care less if a tree looks nice and has birds flying around in it, I just wanna pair of ac 10 +10str gloves!

I think EQs charactors look fine ( although i wish there were more face/body and armour look options << /say Hey! anybody see a wood elf druid around here?...he had long white hair and a leather shirt on..and I think he was wearing moccasins....

Id say Eq has 5 more years ( thats 10 more Expansions ) before something REPLACES EQ1....Ill be 40 then...will I really wanna kill rats and wolves to geto level 10 again?

EDIT: Im not saying 40 is too old by any means, But I like being half-way uber ie: soloing dragons and my trib Beach Lodi, I tried eq2 and just had ZERO fun killing little gobbies at level one, Im sure Ill play another mmorpg but Ill still be grinding aa somewhere in eq1 when the lights go off for the last time:)

I say it ends when it ends, so have fun till it ends. As for age what has that got to do with it? I started playing when I was 40 and I am 47 now and still play. Maybe not as much as before but still in there.

You think that at 40 you are not alowed to play games? Or do you think you will feel childish for playing? I met a guy a few years back that was going on 60 playing, I don't think at 40 you will be the only 40+ person playing the game hehehehe.

I don't have an opinion on how or when the game will end. I hope it just keeps going on forever - but know that it will not do that, as nothing in life lasts forever.

The main reason I'm posting to this thread is sort of a bump. I'm 69 and have, between my wife and myself, 7 active accounts. We still play allmost every night, have a character for every class. We have a total of 8 characters over 65 - none to 70 yet. Oh, and I build all of our computers.

My point is that age has nothing to do with the enjoyment of the game. There was a poster on these boards some time ago who claimed to be in his late 80's. that brust my bubble, as up till then i thought I was probably the oldest poster on the boards.

So now every one can flame me for bumping the thread - I'm old., I can take it.

Dyciere-67 warrior, Seldane-66 Wizard,Bellew-67 Druid, Trackyr-67 Ranger are my highest level characters - playing Dyciere and Seldane mostly these days. If on The Rathe and see me give a shout. Seldane likes to geve folks free rides to whereever they want to go in Norrath.

They don't call it Everquest for nothing. =) As long as UO is still going strong I am not worried about EQ. People will still be playing this game 20 years from now, maybe as part of Sony Stations Multipas or some form thereof, but it will still be around.

I think E. Sony will do one of two things. They will take away all of your toons and make you do some long quest to get them all back. Lost in a void or some super prison. It could be fun. But how many people are going to start all over?

The difference between casual and super gamers will grow greatly. Toons that have the best gear that can solo anything. And your average player. If your main buisness is super gamers. You have to cater to them. Leaving everyone else wondering what happens next? You find another game. Then once the high levels have everything whats the point? Either way interest will die.

So i guess C in the end.

I still play D&D. The book version have been for 8 years. But then again that costs 30 or so dollars everythime the players handbook updates. I have my AD&D one a 3rd edition and 3.5 in those 8 years. Fairly cheap to keep playing.

Here's a question (possible merit for its own topic, but I'm lazy)...

...If SOE was to announce that EQ was coming to an end on (insert date here) what would you do with your time if you were playing the last day before the servers were shut off for good?

A) Impossible. 9 million MMOGs have come out since EQ was released. The consumer market for games does not work like this. People still play Pac Man, Tetris and Pong.

B) Everquest is not dinosaur coding. It has been upgraded many times but it is mostly unnoticeable by the end user. The original Everquest code is long gone, dead and unrecoverable by the way.

C) Servers will continue to merge if populations continue to decrease. They will close Everquest when it becomes unprofitable, not when it gets down to 1 server. Those are not equal factors. 1 server (which is not 1 computer contrary to popular belief) can be maintained by a small team of capable and sane people for a long time.

D) What?

E) Everquest will shut down when it becomes unprofitable. Theere are no dramatic looking Wizards in big towers controlling everything.

First I'd go touring, try and at least see any zones that I hadn't yet seen.

Then I might strip down my toons and jump into the hole or something.

Camp my main in Stonebrunt by the waterfall. I spent a lot of time there, and that is still one of my favorite spots in all of Norrath. It would be a fitting final resting spot for my druid.

I would camp my enchanter back down in Crystal Caves by the geonid trail. I spent more time in that zone then any other and is responsible for the majority of my hard earned plat.

Plus its nice and cool down there....

As for myself, it might be a lot more than a one day task, but I think it would be grand to die over and over all the way back to level 1...then go kill a rat in my hometown of felly as my final act...

...go all the way back to where I started in essence =p

I would walk my Magician, Shaman and Monk from 3 different accounts from Freeport to Surefall Glade and log them out there.

My very first character in Everquest was created in 1999 as a Half Elf Ranger that called Surefall Glade home. This would be an homage to him and the game that captivated me for many a sleepless night.

EDIT: Saeel's post inspired me.

I would delete every last one of my characters without logging them in at all.

I would then create a Half Elf Ranger and walk him from Qeynos to Surefall Glade. I would hail my guildmaster, smile when he says, "Make us proud" log off, turn off my PC and go outside.

That's an awesome idea, and what I would do for sure. Go back to level 1 and kill some Butcherblock goblins...
