bards and melee crittingFollow

ok, so i dinged my bard 67 the other day, for the last couple of levels hes been used mainly as a mana bot and i havent really done much melee with him.

i was lucky enough to win a rot loot tacvi wep the same day he hit 67, and so after the raid i took him to GD and set him on some giants there to test out the new wep and was quite surprised when he stated critting melee hits. ive never seen him do that before.

can anyone tell me if this is a level thing, or possibly related to his new weapon please?
