I want a Classic Server !!!Follow

#1 Jul 12 2006 at 6:58 PM Rating: Decent
So I guess the progression server is already ready to go to Kunark. It seems that one month in and they are moving it up. I bet the power gamers will unlock SoV in another month or 2. Luclin and pop soon after and with in 6 months to a year its just about the same as any other server. (except no pre nerf stuff.) Not what I signed on for and a waste of my time.
Why cant the just make a server that goes up to SoV. Oh hell, if they wanted to do progression til PoP so that it lasted a few years I would be fine with that. I think only going to SoV would be best though. I know I am not the only one who wants the classic server. Oh well another thing to complain about I guess :(

ITs not even 1 month in actually, it didn't open till what June 28th? Thats a little over 2 weeks. This is a big part of the reason I didn't get excited about Progression.

Didn't they put a time on when SoV will open up. As in no matter how soon people "unlock" that part, they still have to wait 'till that time?

There are a couple of interesting points in this.

I think the idea of a bunch of members of an old guild like FoH getting together and powering through the triggers is probably a bit of a surprise to the devs. Seems obvious now with hindsight, but I doubt any one would have expected them to do it. There really is nothing in it for them (FoH) other than a bit of maliciousness and given the history that probably was their motivation.

The other point that it makes is the huge advancement in raid encounter design. The speed with which the old raid mobs have been beaten shows up the weakness of their design, basically you just need a few people with the right equipment to withstand an AE, a geared tank and a few clerics with decent mana. The rest is just a zerg of sort or another.

From GoD onward it is very diferent, you must have a solid team. With everyone geared up and and everyone able to pull their weight.

It also highlights that there are some that play for the enjoyment of the game and the spirit of it, and there are others who just play to win at any cost.

Unless something changed both servers are waiting for Kunark to open, the timeline is there to prevent hacking of progression. No one said that they did hack but with that security in place they still may have to wait for Kunark because of the timeline.

/agree

Now the question is: How long are those timers set for before Kunark will open? If Kunark doesn't open for another couple of weeks due to the timer, then I have to wonder how long the power guilds like FoH will continue to be interested in the Progression servers. If they beat the content, but still have to wait around for the timer to expire, then I can see them getting bored quickly. And we aren't talking about just waiting for Kunark, but what if they quickly beat the content each expansion, and have to wait weeks for the next to become available.

I wouldn't be surprised if you get your wish yet, SpideRny, depending on how the devs set those timers.

Kunark will be opening on or near July 28th, it's been stated, and I'd assume there's at least one month time-locks for each expansion. I'm thinking this could thin out some of the guilds rushing through, at least. On Sleeper there's only one guild currently working toward progression, Insidious Visions, but there are plenty of people looking to enjoy the game at their own pace. I'm in a guild of 220+ folks who are looking to take their time and see alot of content. The last three nights I've been in Befallen, Befallen and Unrest, respectively, and if Kunark were open I think I'd have done little different. The important thing is having folks in your level range to group with, unless it just bothers you to see the power-gamers so far ahead. It doesn't bother me.

I can't believe it would be a surprise to anyone that the progression servers are being used to see who is the best the quickest. The progression server was put in when the game for high end players is boring. They are AA'd out, they are nearing the end of all expansions and some obviously are at the end of every expansion. They are trying to keep themselves occupied till something new and challenging somes out.

Considering the above and add 7 or 8 years of EQ knowledge, the level 1 started with on the progression server....then your reality is .....there is no way to bring back the past. The past was a new game, new territory, no strats, no understanding and very few, if any friends to play with. Today are people that understand every single quirk of the game, traveling in huge packs with a lot of hours on thier hands out of boredom.

Add in the hacks you have what you have....just two more servers that will eventually die off due to lack of population when everyone goes back to playing thier own toons again.

Well if you read the original thread about these servers back in May

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1;mid=1144652342203237513;page=1

You'll see a fair few people anticipated them being stormed.

Including one who said
Quote:
And some bored guild or other - possibly even a startup from here a la AS - will power through it. We know so much more - they will leave so much more in than was there on day one. They will undoubtedly mess up turning back the **** and leave in items and mobs that are inappropriate.

There seem to be two completely different mind-sets playing these games. People who regard them as games and people who regard them as team-sport. For the latter any "unlocking" is a challenge to be overcome and completed as quickly as possible. One can only hope that they have a different approach to sex.

Its kinda silly really, they close servers down and then open these up so they can be like the ones they closed in 6 months.

I guess the forgot the people who only play the game to be the first to do anything would stom the servers. Heheheh oh well atleast it gets them off the other servers for 5 or 6 moths

SoEvil is just doing all it can to keep flagging subscriptions up. They did manage to attract a few people back to the game, but they will leave again as the ubergamerz storm the triggers and keep opening expansions at a breakneck pace. The devs bumbled hugely in linking openings to triggers instead of just a solid timeline. Perhaps they'll correct this. Otherwise, the prog servers will be deserted within a year.

Of course I agree with the OP that a TRUE classics server would have been a great idea, one that only opened up to Velious. SoEvil couldn't manage to do that though. Too many devs working on the moneymill expansions I guess. Either that, or the figure people that didn't waste money on expansions before might do so now if it's part of the progression server.

I want a true classic server, too, but the Progession is a lot of fun so far - and it may be as close as we're going to get. Kunark still isn't open, and it feels very much like the original game - all the old world zones are full of players, with only the gear those zones were designed for. There's no PoK or Bazaar, there's no one over lvl 50, and not a single AA has yet been logged. It may not be exactly what we hoped for, and it may not last as long as we might have wished, but if you loved the Verant-era game, get it while you can. :-)

Im not big on the "get it while you can". Id rather not waste my time leveling up another toon (that will take twice as long) to play on a server that will soon be just like all the others.

I also wanted a classic style server and IMO the new servers have been ruined by all those "Me-First!!" glory hounds who in just 10 days killed all the required mobs to unlock the Kunark expansion. If it weren't for the time limit, we'd probably be in SoL by now.

I know the high end guilds are going to sweat a lot in Ssra if the new server has the same mobs as the old servers. Before the change, my guild fgorce of around 20 could bring down emp ssra in about 15 minutes and most of them aren't ep oir qvic geared. Most at best were bazaar geared using dropable or player made items from OoW and DoN as well as the DoN crystals. After the recent patch, we spent 45 minutes on emp ssra and we had almost 40.

Without the gears from newer expansions post SoL, emp ssra would have been nearly impossible if not taking hours to kill. No MGB paragon/perfection aa. No wake the dead aa for dps. no powerful spells or such, etc.

With luck, Emp Ssra is not the final mob to kill for PoP expansion, Aten Ha Ra in VT would be required. VT key requires 10 shards, frame, orb from most minor luclin bosses, and rift from mobs that spawns after emp ssra dies.

i agree. i stopped playing after a while, forgot why.. i think it was high school or something. i miss when pp was actually difficult to get, instead of the east germany thing that's going on now (from what i understand.) i remember when i'd never seen 1kpp in my life, and i fizzled to my hearts content when i got my first ranger spell at level 9. then the excitement of all the spells i get every few levels. so many things missed. i would have liked to travel around to see different areas, but by the time i got to a high enough level to get around, PoP came out and all i had to do was click a book and i was in a parallel universe from which i could pop out at nearly any zone.
