I still can't get this DX9.0c program working. I try to open the file then it says the file is not a valid Win32 application

were did you download it from?

Apparently one of the links Sony provided was an incorrect link. Anytime you need to d/l Direct X go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/directx

You will get the executable file there.

You might have the same bug in your operating system I had. It does not allow you to install operating system files like DX9 or even updates. All the MS diagnostics/solutions I tried did not fix it, so I am trying a re-install of Windows XP.

that is caused by a few things, but the #1 thing i have seen that causes that issue is a patch from MS that requires the extra "authentication" software to be installed.

It trashed one of my computers to the point i had to format and reinstall even though i have a completly legit Corp. exdition of XP Pro. I e-mailed MS about the issue and only got an auto responder that did NOTHING but point to links on how to BUY a new copy of XP.

so NEVER install that patch and that should help reduce issues like what you are discribing Dot.

Mmmm never had that problem on any of the 75+ machines I update on reg sch. That maybe more of a installed spyware type problem and not a MS oper problem. I have seen spyware that woll redir the OS update to a none MS web site.

Yes there was some corruption in the operating system going on somewhere, totally apart from the Dx9 issue. I re-installed XP, got the DX9 april version and it loaded up fine. I am back in game but all my character customized files are gone (had to download the whole game from patcher). I saved my screenshots, should have saved my maps too but no biggie.

There is a known issue in Windows that involves the error "The Software You Are Installing Has Not Passed Windows Logo Testing..." even if you are installing Microsoft software.

It has to do with the fact that applications are signed with a key that Windows can match up to a database to see if the program has been certified for Windows or whatever.

The mechanism in Windows that verifies this key is called the Cryptographic Service. Some of the service's database files are stored in C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2. It is apparently possible for some of these files to become corrupt or otherwise changed in such a way that the Cryptographic Service can no longer verify software signatures.

This simplest possible fix I've seen for this is to stop that service, rename Catroot2 to something else, and reboot the computer. Windows is supposed to be able to automatically recreate that folder and files when we do that. It doesn't always fix the problem but it's something relatively quick and simple to try. Note that there is also a Catroot folder, but Windows cannot recreate that one on its own.

Anyway, I just wanted to throw this out there to let anyone know they're not crazy if they see this error because it's an error that legit copies of Windows can display.
