I downloaded the patch and when I hit 'Play' I get this message :

This application failed to start because - " d3dx9_30.ddl was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" .

Any suggestions as to what is wrong here ?

you have to have the latest vs of DX 9c to play EQ now. the updated vs from windowsupdate will not work, you need to download the distributed vs. and reinstall DX from there.

If you are downloading the 52MB file named directx_apr2006_redist.exe, it is a self extracting compressed file. You can download it to whichever directory you want.

When it is executed, it attempts to extract (unzip, if you prefer) the DirectX install files and asks you where to put them. You can put these wherever you want. I recommend creating a new temporary directory named DX or something similar right on your desktop or in your My Documents folder, but wherever is convenient is fine, and telling the program to place the install files in this new directory.

Then you must display the files inside the directory (with My Computer, Windows Explorer, or what utility you prefer to use to display files on your hard drive) and run (double-click) the file named DXSetup.exe. I think that is the correct name. It is the only .exe file in the whole directory. If your file extensions are hidden, it should be the only file of type Application, I think.

This will start the actual DirectX update process. There are a few dialog boxes to go through first including the license agreement, etc., and then eventually you should see a progress bar with a message telling you that it is searching for files to update (or something like that). You may or may not have to reboot afterwards. It depends on your OS, I think.

After all this, you should be able to run the DirectXTest.exe program in your Everquest directory and after several seconds receive a little window that says you are all set.

I think this is all accurate, but I am writing this from memory, so if yours appears slightly different, it is probably a mistake on my part.

Alternate update methods:

If you are downloading the file named dxwebsetup.exe, I believe you can also save it wherever you want, then run it to complete the update, although I did not do it this way, so I don't have details.

I believe you can also just Run the file dxwebsetup.exe from the website instead of downloading it, but I have not done that either.

I hope this helps.

The file from Microsoft should be a self installing file. Find it in Explorer and double click on it. It should install itself.

I have had directx 9.0c for awhile now but it didn't work. After some searching I found out you not only need directx 9.0c but you need the version no older then april 06.

I pulled the april2006redistribution file, installed it and had no problems loading EQ.

Do a search for "directx_apr2006_redist" and you should have no problem finding numerous places to download it from.

It is a self extracting file which means you dont need an extracting program to run it. Just double click and choose somewhere to put it. Once it has extracted just run DXSETUP and follow the directions. It should only take a minute or two to install.

Apparently my version of Windows XP wont accept any drivers that have not passed Windows XP Logo testing (whatefver that is). How do I DISABLE this and have DirectX 9.0c install?

You can't turn the validation off. You have to find it from another site. Apparently they have something against programmer licenses as well. I hade to reload xp with one of my personal licenses when they first started doing this crap. They said the license was invalid because it was used on more then 1 PC. (No ****. That’s why they made programmer licenses)

You have to question why SoE didn't just include the drivers in the patch (Like they would if it where an expansion) it would save everyone a million levels of confusion and download problems.

If they are going to make a major change to the base programme that runs the game they at least should provide the new programme themselves instead of making people go and get it themselves.

For the Windows Logo error, you might try the following:
1. Stop the "Cryptographic Services" service.
1a. To do that, go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. Right Click on "Cryptographic Services" and choose stop.

2. Rename C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 folder to something else, like Catroot2-old. Worst case you can always rename the folder back to Catroot2 later.
Note: There is also a C:\Windows\System32\Catroot folder but leave that one alone.

3. Start the "Cryptographic Services" service.

4. If you are not running Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, run a Microsoft Patch. If you don't know if you have SP2, run the patch and it will either install or tell you it you already have better.

5. Reboot the computer and try installing DX9c again.

If your machine doesn't have the latest DirectX9.0c runtimes, please go to:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56513&clcid=0x409

and following the instructions there.

If this fails, the following solution should work for you

If you use the Windows Update to update to DirectX 9.0C, you will be unable to play the Test Server at this time due to a missing file, d3dx9_30.dll, in the Windows Update patch series. This error manifests itself as a dialog that appears when you run testeqgame.exe (the game client) and tells the user the program could not be initialize due to being unable to find the critical file/component d3dx9_30.dll. The file itself is available as a part of the April 2006 DirectX 9.0C SDK redistributable distribution. To solve this situation, follow the following steps to reinstall DirectX 9.0C from the redistributable distribution:

1. Get the April 2006 DirectX 9.0C redistributable version (Caution: Download is about 52 MB) at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=fb73d860-5af1-45e5-bac0-9bc7a5254203&DisplayLang=en

2. Run directx_apr2006_redist.exe. Extract the files to an easily identifiable directory.

3. Go to the directory the files were extracted to in step 2. Run "DXSETUP.EXE" from that directory.

4. Accept the license agreement. Allow the installer to update the DirectX components.
