I am new to EQ. Which race and class do you recommend? I want a spellcaster but i would also like to be able to melee and i like pets but thats not necessary. What do you think?

melee and spells... that would be a hybrid. Shadow Knight, Paladin, Ranger, Beastlord. If its your first character you'll probably enjoy the beastlord most, you can get by without much gear (unlike Shadow Knight or paladin) and you'll be useful (unlike a ranger) (i'm being half sarcastic). You'll get a very very good pet and useful spells. Plus they're fun to play.

I'd recommend a Beastlord. As far as the race goes, Ogres and Trolls have an experience penalty so you might want to stay away from them for that reason, aside from that, race is not very significant.

Aye go beastlord. great at melee and at lvl 56 mine has about 1k in direct damage spell per mob along with 165hp damage of time per tick or 6 seconds. my pet also has spells. He can tank also at time great class. As far as race I would go Barbarian If I had it to do again. To many of us Kats out there and the exp penalty for Ogres and trolls make them a bad choice

I second that. I also happen to think they're the most fun to play, by far.

but beastlords cant spellcast...i was thinking shadowknight but i hear they are difficult because they dont have much offense and their spells suck so what about ranger?

beastlords can cast spell and i wouldnt make a SK/Pal/War becasue they are sooo hard to get geared up if its ur first toon and they need gear the most of any classes for tanking i would go with beastlords becasue lots of ppl need them in group becasue of slows rangers arnt bad either for a first timeer

BL are able to cast spells.

the SK is great and has more offense then defense. there is a running joke about rangers being the sacrifice for the group.

BL, SK, Pally, Ranger are all fun to play to a sort. im not a fan of the pally as a person, but that is just me. rangers until they get true shot are a PITA to solo and level up.

their roll in groups at the low and mid level is almost a waist. limited DPS (better to use a rogue, or nuker), they can not really tank in the mid levels (30 - 50) as their mitigation and chain is not enough to keep them alive long enough without waisting loads of mana from the cleric.

anyways, that is not to really start a flame war, sorry for upsetting the rangers, but at higher levels a ranger with a good bow and trueshot among their other AA abilities rangers are awsome at DPS, but still die much faster then most other melee type classes mentioned here in this thread.

i for one did not like the BL, but then again that is me.

Now for the SK, that is a powerful class for offense has great solo ability, casts plenty of great spells, has an ok pet, and makes one of the best pullers in the game. Pallies for that matter are also great pullers, but if they ***** up the group/raid could have an issue. if a SK screws up the pull, only the SK is at risk for the most part.

all knights have very high mitigation and extreemly good AC/HP and some of the best snap agro in the game.

so any and all of them would be a fun class to play and learn. as for what class is best to learn the game, well SoE gives you something like 8 toons per server.

pick a class, pick a race, and play it to at least the 20s and see what it is like. some classes dont get competant until the mid 20s to low 30s. Chanters are like that. at the mid 20s chanters really start to learn their prime job of CC (crowd control)

so enjoy the game, play and have fun, ask questions about the class you are learning to play.

Never trust someone who can't spell, despite the fact that they disclaim it in their sig ;P (it's role, and waste).

Sing is certainly entitled to his opinion, wrong though it may be. I've played 3 rangers on various servers, and even with the most basic gear, happily soloed to 50 or higher in each case. As far as group roles, Rangers tracking ability and DPS is always welcome, regardless of level. The sad truth about EQ is that you are your gear, regardless of class. Get the best you possibly can, as soon as you can.

It really doesn't matter what class you play, pre-50 any group will accept you and the levels between 1 and 50 will fly by. As far as the sacrifice issue, Rangers are one of the melee classes that get the Weaponshield skill, which makes them invulnerable to a frontal attack for 20 seconds. I can't tell you how many times I've used it to "sacrifice" myself on a raid-gone-bad so at least one cleric could camp out. Maybe this is what Sing is referring to.

He's definately right about playing multiple puppets though. It's the only way to see what fits your own playstyle. Try a Ranger. And a Beastlord. And a Shadowknight. And a Paladin. See what suits you best. Whatever you choose, make sure you're having fun.

tanks are bad for someone starting because you are going to be gimp untill you put a whole lot of time into it. Wizards and necros are fun, can solo very wel and are not as dependent on the gear as a lot of classes.
