Now that I'm 65, I think I've earned the right to rant a bitFollow

I play Paerien Moonglum, a 65 Ranger on Bristlebane. I don't know how this server compares to others (only play on this server), but I spend a LOT of time /LFG. Let me make one thing clear: I don't have any sympathy for people who say "I am /LFG *ALL THE TIME* and can never find a group". I am the kind of person who will open up the /LFG window and quickly rattle down any players in my list who are also LFG, sending tells to them all: "Interested in a DoD MM?" or "Want to start a BoT group", etc. I do keep a list of friends and update it often with people I play with who are good players and fun to group with. But if you don't have a healer - a guildie (I'm in a very small guild - looking for a new family one), or a friend, or someone /LFG, you're stuck. The best group in the world has to have a healer - in WoS, BoT, NC, etc. So unless you want to rely on a Druid for healing, good luck putting together a group. I would expect this problem may lessen if I join a larger guild, but I can't play 8 hours a day, and because I have a RL wife (who hates EQ - hehehe), I can't pre-plan even 2-3 hours a day at a given time.

Anyway, I'm rambling. ;)

Here's my two issues/questions:

1. I don't mind soloing, but don't have EQ yet (have AM1 and 3 AAs toward EQ, then on to AM2,3). But even if I did, kiting is a process where I run in a circle firing arrows for 10 minutes per mob. I'm not thrilled about that option. I love everything about Rangers (it's basically my only toon), but IMHO, you can have only so much fun with this long process. So, I turned to tasks in Dreadlands. These are supposed to be single-player, right? I was able to do the easy ones, but the medium ones are impossible alone. I know they "give crap xp", but I don't mind. I enjoy playing the game, running from zone to zone, fighting mobs, etc. But why have me go deep into the bowels of Veksar, where everything is a *WAY* under-conned dk blue to me, so I can investigate a room where the mobs see through invis and hit for 500 per swat? Fully buffed, I'm sitting on barely over 6K hp (my gear is, unlike most, probably pretty level-appropriate, but 90% bazaar), so there's no way I'll be able to stand toe-to-toe with a Golem in there. Kiting is out with a mob every 8 feet, so this task is unbeatable, solo. I know that another person can get the same task and we can duo it, but then it's not a solo task anymore, is it?!? ;) And for what? 10% AAxp and 100pp? I would *LOVE* to do solo tasks when I have an hour to play here and there. Even if a task were to force me to go into a place that's more level-appropriate and explore a whole zone, I could handle the time - it's the impossibility of single-player tasks that gets my panties in a bunch!

2. EQ gets a LOT more complicated at 65. It seems like up to now, the game has been pretty straight-forward (keep in mind that I started in 2001, but left for 3 1/2 years, came back for 6 months, left for a year, and have been back for a month): get a group, go to zone, kill stuff. Pretty simple. But now, with Planar Progression, DoD Progression, spell missions, DoN faction, spell runes/parchments, etc. - the game is a LOT more complicated. So I guess my question here is: If LDoN is dead, (seems like DoN is dead too), people sometimes laugh when I ask if they want to do a DoD MM: "people still do those" or "sorry, they got nerfed too bad" - what's left in EQ? I'd love some suggestions on things to do post 65, but even when I pull up /LFG, it seems like half of the 65-70 players have specific PoR stuff they want to do (which I don't own, yet) or have specific zones/missions they want to do. I guess I just feel lost. I literally get laughed at when I ask if anyone wants to do a LDoN. Any suggestions on how I can move forward now that I'm 65? I'd love to upgrade my equipment and grind AAs/levels.

I guess this all comes down to: It seems like SoE nerfs everything that ISN'T in their newest expansion. Why? There are so many zones I loved and still love to fight in, but it seems like the only ones even used anymore are the newest ones and ones toons "have to go to" for a quest/epic.

So sorry for the long rant, but I guess I'm frustrated when I feel like the solo game is virtually impossible, unless you go buy all kinds of potions, attack a light blue mob, and stick all your bought potions in a beer bong, and open your windpipe. ;) I know people have complained about the solo game since the beginning, but honestly, if they could make tasks soloable, but make them take 90 minutes to finish, I would have NO problem with that.

Thoughts?

I'm not going to address every point you made, but my suggestion will fix most of them: stop what you're doing and switch to 100% AA's until you have EQ/AM3. This is the reason you're not getting groups, and is also the reason you're not able to solo well. One you've finished your archery AA's and have a planar bow, your solo options will be much better.

At level 62 I worked the AA's for headshot, and went to the Mines of Nurga until I had EQ/AM3. When LFG, I would shout "6x Ranger w/ EQ/AM3, LFG." I was told on many, many occasions that I would not have been invited had I not mentioned the EQ/AM3. I rarely had a problem getting into a group after that.

Another thing that would help you is joining a guild. That will open up a lot of opportunity for guild groups, provided you join one with more than 10-15 members.

EDIT: Incidentally, the good old days of soloing are still pretty much over for you. After 65, it's only worthwhile to solo for AA's. At 66 I was getting around 7 ticks per solo kill on Murks in Nobles Causeway.

Whats wrong with using a druid as a healer. They can be quite good at it if you choose your content correctly.

Dang it, I misspoke about the Druid healer - I apologize. :)

I have *NOTHING* at all against a Druid healer. Heck, I'd even take a Pally healer. But usually, you have two potential problems with a non-Cleric healer:

1. MT/MA doesn't want that kind of risk. Yes, that means they are usually either a bad MT/MA, or don't realize that a Druid can heal extremely well. Often, group members aren't comfortable being in a group where a rez can't happen fairly quickly if they go down.

2. Druid doesn't want to be or isn't comfortable being MH.

Granted, these aren't the norm - they happen less than 50% of the time, but it does happen. Often, I'll invite someone to a group and the reply comes back: "do you have a Cleric?" Let's face it, most 62-70 Clerics are in /LFG for 5-10 minutes - they simply wait for the best opportunity to come along. If you could join a BoT group at 62 - with a bunch of other 62-65's, or an all 70 group going to some god-like zone that I've never even HEARD of for uber xp, uber loot, playing with little risk, which would you choose? ;)

But yes, Druids are great healers - no doubt.

Something your also forgetting is pretty much every high level gorup has to have a slower too.

I have also notice dpeople are VERY picky anymore. They would rather sit LFG for 2 hours instead of take a group that might not give them what they want. Anytime I am invited to a group I will generally join unless I can tell its going to be a disaster, and even then I will sometimes join. Clerics are usually the worst because they know they are in high demand. I can get dps to just about join anything, but good tanks and clerics are always wanting just 1 zone or 1 mission etc.

Its also ashame you HAVE to have a certain amount of AA's to even get a group. But the way SOE has shaped the game its really just about a requirement. I mean a lvl 70 tank with no aa's and bazaar gear can't tank mobs for exp hardly. I don't know how many DON missions have failed because the tank didn't have good enough gear. There is no way Id try to start a tank class from scratch at this point in time, once you hit 51 people expect to grind out 200 aa's to be worth a crap.

And I have also noticed how badly SOE nerfs older content. DODH was the biggest scam ever. They had beta testers etc, they can't say they had no idea people would gain too much exp. They released the expansion knowing it was too powerful. People spread the info by word of mouth in game more and more bought it. Then when sales dropped they nerfed it to the point nobody hardly wants to mess with it. I think they did the same to high level LDON missions after Gates came out. My at the time 55 warrior was gaining about 60% of a yellow per easy mission. The day gates came out me and everybody in the group was complaining because we got about 30%.

fronglo,

You are my new hero. You said everything I wanted to say, but with far fewer words. :)

I will invite about 10-12 people who are LFG if they want to do a DoD MM or BoT, or NC, etc. They have a specific zone in their /LFG tool, but I ask anyway. They'll say "no thanks" and when I come back an hour or two later, still sitting there LFG. It's insane!

I don't think...no...I KNOW I've never ONCE turned down a group because the MT didn't have enough AAs or asked him to link equipment before I join, nor have I ever turned down a group because no slower or no Cleric. I'm thrilled just to get an invite! :)

I realize that EQ is primarily a group/raid game, but what were tasks even included for if nobody wants to do them or CAN do them?

A ranger above 62 without EQ and AM3 has sort of missed the boat IMO. Another poster said it fine: Turn AA xp to 100%, then go have fun in FG or HoH graveyard or do some DoN solo tasks and get your archery up to par.

Rangers can't solo worth ***** past 50, so only do it if you need to forage something in a particular zone (PoI can make you a fair amount of money while you solo with LFG up).

And yes - join a guild! This game is meant to be social, not solo.

What made you think just because you're 65 you could rant?

Agreed, get at least 500 AA's and go through the high end parts of expansions first. At least then you've got something to whine about.

Queen Sendaii is the stupidest encounter ever.
