In some of the recent posts I have heard people talking about EQ Emulator. I know it is cheating by what I have read and don't plan to use it, but what is it?

Edited for spelling

It is a emulator that allows people to set up their own everquest servers. You can program quests using perl, and basically make a server however you like. However it is VERY difficult to use. For starts if you have patched since like DODH you can't play it. I haven't actually been on it for over a year. Most of the community is jerks and they would rather spend 10 minutes righting a page about how you suck instead of take 2 minutes to answer a question you may have. Seriously they are the biggest jerks in the world, no other way to say it.

Some servers are custom meaning the zones are spawned differently, completely new items etc. I had my own server for awhile but I could never work the bugs out and once again nobody would offer any help because they was to busy telling you what a idot you was for not being a expert on how to run a server. Problem that I had was people would LD if more then 4 or 5 people was attacking a mob (which was a big problem). I was really proud of it, but alas it is completely gone. I even had Plane of War populated with mobs in it, epic quests (not like live but equally challengeing), and a in depth story. I had a really good idea for Potime but I never got around to implementing it. Was going to have a story where it showed like Innoruuk as a child and he was scared because others thought he was ugly. If you do a quest that shows him compasion he would spawn in potimeb as a nicer god, however if you did nto he would grow up to hate the world, etc etc.

Other servers are called ill-legit. Basically you can ding yourself lvl 70 and summon as many AA's as you want. You also can #zone potimeb or anywhere you want to go on these servers. These are good for those of us who don't raid 8 hours a day and can't ever see zones like elemental planes, time, anguish, etc etc. And of course you have the normal servers which are basically like live only with about 5 people on instead of 1000's. There was even a guy who had a classic server but once again it just wasn't the same because he hadn't programed the old world quests and there was generally only 25 people on server wise so it wasn't exactly the classic everquest play.

I hope I am not violating any rules, I am just giving information for those curious. Like I said though its doubtful anybody can just go there and play because DODH broke the emu and if you patch after that you are unable to play. As far as legal issues go I don't see how SOE can say its ILLEGAL. Against SOE TOS yes... but not illegal.

So even if you did make your way to it I doubt you would be able to play. If you want to find it I imagine any search engine would show it first result.

it's an understandable reaction given how many people are too lazy to read the manual.

Eh i dabbled with it a bit and i must say compared to other types of servers its really not hard if you have some experience with mysql.

They are now compatible with titanium just cant patch it.

All in all it just cant compare to Live. Its impossible for them to keep it up to date with live being as how SOE changes the code every so often so they cannot keep up. for example now they are at titanium but no AAs work.

Personally i had fun with it but beyond playing with different classes decked out it was actually quite boring.

And froogle is right the community is really a bunch of asses with some exceptions (especially considering most of the good devs took off for eq2emu), the guide is Horrendously written and seems to be all over the place as far as info making you have to go back and forth between pages of the guide to get it set up properly.

I have worked with WoWemu and EQemu and WoWemu is written 100X better with a stronger community, and much more updated.

But again neither can compare to live servers you really are better off paying for the support/updates. even though you may not think highly of SOE customer support its better than nothing.
