Fast and Slow progression serversFollow

#1 May 09 2006 at 1:24 PM Rating: Decent
There has been soo much talk about the new server and how guilds will burn through the content and unlock it all too fast. How about 2 servers "fast" and "slow" all the hardcore raiders can go to the fast server and burn through the content as fast as they want and the toons and the slow server can hang out and tradeskill forever :P

I doubt any guilds will burn through as you put it, the game back pre-luclin was not easy with the gear availible. I can't see any guild opening up Luclin inside 12-18 months, faction requirements will stop it if nothing else.

Even if the do so what, the whole idea is to play old school and enjoy it, Velious is nasty if you don't have good gear on, so you will have to work slowly

Problem solved... Like this:

Just set it up so that if playerA hasn't done expansion A, then he never gets to expansion B and can't use any stuff from expansion B... regardless of what playerB unlocked or wants to sell him.

100% solution, everybody's happy.

Ofcourse, SOE would never be that genius.
So a lot of the fans will go to the new server and be unhappy after a while.

Hasn't it ALWAYS been the playerA vs playerB issue that makes the playerAs unhappy?

Except that a lot of people play casually and may never reach the 'end game' content of any expansion. Or, if they do, it's way down the line.

By which I mean that there's plenty of people who were playing in Chardok or Sebilis who never raided Nagafen or Vox. Plenty who were in Tower of Frozen Shadows or Crystal Caverns who never entered Veeshan's Peak or even killed Trakanon. Plenty who explored Mons Seru or Twilight Sea but never saw Temple of Veeshan or Sleeper's Tomb... etc.

You've never had to "complete" an expansion before to play the casual content of the next so why would a progression server be better for forcing you?

Guilds will burn through content lightning fast. The reason is simple and has nothing to do with gear.

Knowledge.

Veterans of the game know exactly what quests to do, what mobs to kill, where NPCs are located and everything else necessary to gear up and level up quickly. And yes, I am talking about old world, pre Kunark.

Take this for example:

Runed Totem Staff

Junk you say? This staff will rip through anything On Antonica, Faydwer and Odus as it did back in 1999 and this time around, my friends and I can get level 10 and head straight for these Gnolls and farm it because we know exactly where they are and how tough they are. Back in the day, this was a hot item because most players did not know where to find it or, more importantly, they did not know how to get to where it drops without dying.

Faction? Again, we know exactly where and how to raise faction and more importantly, what race, class and Diety to start with.
Dar Elf Warriors of Innoruuk had no idea what they were in for back in 1999. Uber guilds who want to move quickly will just make all Agnostic characters now.

These examples are not ideal by far but they illustrate a point.

If SOE does not put artificial constraints on the content. (ie. Vox is unkillable for 6 months) the progression server will have prophecy of Ro opened up before the next expansion is released.

I do not mean to be offensive but these statements are completely inaccurate. Anyone in a old, top guild would agree.

My guild, Diviner, currently Vane on Ec'i/Tunare did not move slowly through Velious or Kunark for that matter. Pre Luclin, we were so fat with gear, levels and strategies that we just farmed Dain, Tormax and Skyshrine and complained that Luclin was too slow in coming out.

Frankly, too many players are so spoiled now that if they start untwinked and get beat up by a Frost Giant they think the game was "hard" before the Bazaar.

Knowlage won't help you kill Naggy if you haven't got the gear to do it. it wll take 2-4 months for people to get to the level where they can hunt for gear that willl allow you to take on the big 2 dragons. Then you have to farm for that gear to equip a full guild.

It certainly won't stop it taking you 3-4 months to get faction to break into Velious end game either.

It will still take you 3-4 months to get a guild factioned to get to Velious end game.

Have to remember some of these guild basically play 24 hours a day. When 1 person goes to bed another picks up etc. Well maybe not 24 hours, but they play ALOT. Especially now that summer is coming all your students will be out of school and playing on here.

I still say people will go through it quickly. I once met a cleric way back when... well about when velious had just came out and Lguk was still fairly popular and people wanted the fbss etc. Well in those days a cleric could just about walk into any group in lguk. This toon was run by a security company and there was basiclly 4 people playing it just about 24 hours a day. This charactor was 52 and had gotten 52 he claimed in 3 weeks. Of course he could have been lieing but during that time being a cleric and 24 hours I could see it very well being true.

As far as a Fast and Slow progression server it won't keep hardcore people out. If anything they will want on the slow one so they can hurry up and get top dog and be better then everybody else.

Hehe.. Progressive Oldworld Server (PoS). I would just like to note that on 12 July, Vanguard is released. If I wanted to "start new" on anything, it'd be a new game entirely.

All the content on the progression server is currently available on my server.

Nothing is stopping me from playing expansions in order.

Nothing says I can't have fun while I do it.

The only thing keeping me from using a specific expansion's gear to get thru that expansion is my integrity.

````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Basically this new server has no appeal to me, but I can see the value of it's nostalgia for all you real crusty old EQ veterans out there. I sincerely hope you enjoy it, as I will surely enjoy lower populations on the regular servers! Smiley: lol
Vangaurd will not be released until November at the earliest, it's still has a stage 3 Beta and an open stress test before release.
Brad has catagoricly denied a July release date.
Just because you have this content available right now doesn't mean you can use it. You can't walk into Blackburrow and shout LFG and espect to get one because the zone is nearly empty! Same for Lguk, and well almost all old world zones.
The point of the new server is to force people to play in these old zones. You can bet there will be people hunting dervish cutthroats again because they can't hit POK and be in Kurns.
Far as using the old gear goes yea you can although it is genreally more expensive then alot of the newer much better gear.
Very good point Fronglo. Like I said in the earlier post, it looks like a great idea for alot of people, I am just not one of them I suppose.
Re-Edit; my post has nothing to do with this forum so I deleted it. lol I think the progressive server will be great fun! Definately a chance to start everyone on an even keel. WTG Sony!
I agree Froglo and Komzur.
Much as SoE is hated, the DO listen to thier player base, probably a little too much if anything, we asked for ease of travel we got it, we asked for an easy way to 70 when it became clear that as the game got older 70 was where you needed to be so they gave us MM,s
SoE seems to get a very bad rep for a company that has managed to keep as game going (and still hugely popular) for this long.
