Play what you like, that's what you'll have the most fun with.

Like to bash stuff? War, Pally, SK
Like the sneaky approach to life incl. backstabbing? Rog
Arrows, general all-around guy? Ranger, Pally

**YOU** pick. :)

If your new to the game, Take a Ranger.

2 reasons.

1. they are probably the best class to learn the game with because they have track(to find mobs) and snare(So if it all goes wrong you can get away).

I always recommend starting players take a Ranger untill they have learned the basics of the common zones and tactics.

On a side note, rangers are also good so you can get used to dying.

LOL..Today I did a Ranger Gate with me Mage in Echo, apparently mushrooms no like evil Gnomes.

On topic..choose a class that you feel would best suit your needs. Here's some PROBLEMS I find with the few classes I played:

1)Magician(rule all)-Have mana, horrible at melee. If pet dies, normally you do too. Have to research(boring..)Mana is their life, no mana, no life.

2)Pally-Hybrid class, meaning you have to worry about mana pool as well as HP/AC..Are often called to do a LoH on people when things get rough, which can get rather annoying. Being called on as the backup cleric isn't entirely fun either, having to fall back and heal. Not the best DPS.

3)Ranger-Having the ability to track makes you the leader of the group to find mobs about 100% of the time. Have minor heal, so often are called to use that when Cleric/Shammy/Druid/(sometimes)Pally are out of mana. Not the best at staying alive or at DPS.

4)Rouge-Light armor, meaning no cool looking plate armor for the added AC. Normally don't get to tank. Often called to disarm traps which isn't (imho) fun. Also need to pick locks especially in LDoN's. Backstab means you normally are told and required to go to the back of the mob and hit it from the weak side(seems kinda pansy like to me)

5)Monk-Weight requirement, you lose agility with more weight ya got, and that doesn't mean when you're encumbered. Have to learn to pull(can be difficult), have some annoying skills that are almost a necessity(Feign Death, Mend..)

6)Cleric-Heal me, Rez me, Temp me, everything..buff buff buff, heal heal heal..boring. Have to worry bout mana, in fact, that's really all you do have to worry about.

Few more, too lazy to type

3)Ranger-[...] Not the best at staying alive or at DPS .

Are you serious? Have you EVER seen a 70 ranger do over 2600 points of damage with one shot? Then add trickshot for a ranged double attack of 5k damage.. I know rangers aren't going to be that heavy dps starting out but end game they are priceless because their damage doesn't depend on mana (except hail of arrows but they still sustain heavy damage output without that).

On a side note to OP, shadowknight has been my favorite class and I've played most. It depends on what you'd rather do, warrior will be the best tanking no matter what. SK and pally are good at fast agro and have more utility than warriors and can tank most non-raid mobs well enough to get by. If you choose rogue or ranger you're not there to tank but you'll be putting out a lot of damage. It's generally easier to find a group as a tank type as they are always needed in the "standard group" however as the tank type you will have to keep your gear up to par with what zone you're in. I've many times been asked my hp/ac when LFG, but never been asked anything when LFG on a DPS character.

unless you plan on raiding... i suggest you stop on the warrior idea right now.. end game totally gear dependant....

SK Pally (kinda same situation but not as bad)

range and roge are really fun you'll suck in the lower levels but once you get to about 30-40 you really pick up in the kick *** department.

uh actually a class i'd recommend playing is a shaman or a cleric, they always get groups can get real fun bouncing around all over doing stuff.

I was kicking *** in the rogue department at level 15 but that's because I had a Horn of Hsagra and other sweet items.

I think I'm going to second everybody who's saying ranger. They really are the best way to get used to the game.

You could try each class out on the Test server. Once you create your character and enter the world, type /testbuff. That will make your character level 25 with nice gear, all the spells up to that level and skills maxed for that level. Then just wander some zones and try them out. Great way to figure out the early basics of each class.

Call me a pansy, but if you aren't the tank and you're in one of my groups, you best be attacking from the rear or you're getting the boot!

I'd recommend Rogue or Ranger.

Rogue
1) You don't have to worry about super gear, except maybe your weapons.
2) Hide / Sneak are great for exploring.

Ranger
1) If you do tradeskills and questing, foraging is a great asset.
2) Tracking is very helpful when farming or hunting a specific mob.
