Hacked accounts warningFollow

#1 Apr 29 2006 at 1:57 AM Rating: Good
Just wanted to pass on some news from Bertoxxulos. A rash of account hacking is going on. Evidently account names and passwords were stored in PMs on several guild websites hosted by EZboard. Hacked and gone now. This is the most anyone knows right now, so understand it hit like a virus. 25 guildies in one guild where hit and others in other guilds.

I realize this info is just breaking so the facts are hazy, but my info came first hand from a good friend who lost a 70 raid geared bard and druid last night. Needless to say he is upset. Just thought I would warn folks to be careful where you post your account name and password.

Shouldnt post your account info anywhere. This is not the first time this has happened. NEVER post your account info like that.

Ditto. It is a violation of the EULA to give out account and password info. Sorry for their loss, but you take your chances when you do it.
NOTE- Yes folks do share, I know a few who have done it with no problems at all. I dont and never will. (Elneclare is the exception, but then I pay for the accounts.)

NEVER, EVER post or pm your account info.

if you want to share accounts - do it ingame, after you've talked to the person for a few since the last time they logged on, and you're positive it's the real person.

Cant EQ(sony) just trace where all thier stuff went? Just check the logs and see where all this guys stuff was transfered to and give it back? seems easy enough. Then they can ban the accounts who were involved.

I am relatively new to the game so this is of interest to me. I realize that as some said it is nothing new, but it is to me so I assume it is to others.

It seems in the case of my friend the raiding guild he is in asked for the info in an effort to be able to pull guildies in for flagging events if they did not happen to be on. Long time practice and never any problems with it. The account info was PMed via the guild website to a raiding officer and it was left there.

I don't pretend to know the hows or whos did this, but the guild is a close knit bunch that feels with certainty it was not an inside job.

Someone pointed out that it is a violation of the EULA to give out account names and passwords to others, it is, but this is an out in SOE's case to not be required to help a customer in the situation. In this case SOE is allowing some customers to recover what they had at the last patch date. That is a choice they can make or not make on an individual basis.

I don't understand what reason anybody would ever consider posting their username and password on any website. I don't care if it was a website for my family and nobody else, that is just stupid. I guess they wanted to two box their toons or something, but man anybody could get that and go nuts.

Private messaging it to a guildie/friend so they can bot you for a flag, or play you on raid nights with low numbers, or box you for xp...

I have never been in a guild where I have trusted people that well, but then again I am a very untrusting person :/

atm, I think three or four people have the login info to my main toon. quite a few more for some of my bots.

it's not that unusual a thing to do in a lot of higher end guilds, and it's very rare that it turns out bad because of anything other than PM hacking.

Use email. Don't put both pieces of information in the same email.

Better yet, communticate one in game, the other in email.

Better yet, get an email in game, send a phone number by email, and use the phone to communticate the information.

Never leave it on a website, even in a PM, or in a computer, where it can be hacked into. That's where the hack happens, not at SOE.

It's really fairly easy to get the account back. The final identifier for the owner of the account is the Credit Card number that was used to create the account.

Now, if a game card was used that might be a different story. And then, if all the items of any value have been sold to IGE, or thier ilk, your probably going to be out of luck.
