AA & XP (and other) Questions about my 61 RangerFollow

#1 Apr 27 2006 at 2:47 PM Rating: Decent
Folks,

Yes, I'm a recent return to EQ. I've only been off for a year, but only played for 6-9 months before that and had a 3 year layoff prior to that. I feel like the whole EQ world has left me behind, though. I have 9 of the 11 expansions (by the way, would it make sense for me to just buy/download DoD rather than the Platinum Pack?) and plan to get DoD tonight or tomorrow. I'm a 61 Half-Elf Ranger from Tunare - less than one big bubble from 62. I have 13 AAs, only a few from CF3. Then on to EQ/AM3, I suppose. I do have Swiftwind and Earthcaller.

My questions are these:

1. I've been soloing in Fungus Grove and occasionally duoing with someone I find. But the XP is a bit slow, especially when soloing (I single-pull and just plunk arrows and then go toe-to-toe). In your experience, would I be better off soloing in FG or finding a group in PoV? I get a bit tired of the same-old-zones (PoV), but would really like to ding 62 - I'm so tired of 61 now (working 13 AAs without levelling gets frustrating). Any suggestions on a good place to start a group, or find one?

2. Should I concentrate on 62 or really just push for EQ/AM3?

3. AAs - I don't remember at all, but I did a Planes Key (forgot which one - Plane Progression?) and it gave a whole AA for completing it. Is there a link where I can find out which others I can do for more AAs? Is there an easier way to get AAs like this rather than just a constant grind?

4. Assuming I have DoD - is that THE place to go? Is the newest PoR expansion definitely worth it?

I just feel like so much has passed me by and I'm wondering how long I'll last this time, considering I can't make heads-or-tails out of so much. I spent alot of time 6-9 months ago with tradeskills (BORING, but ADDICTING) and starting AAs that I'm sure most of the basics of the post 60 game is just beyond me. And since so many are now 70 with 300 AAs, I'm even more lost and have a tough time finding a group. I just know that there is a lot of content that most people are aware of that I've never even heard of. And the online content isn't what is used to be, so finding the answers seems very difficult...

Thanks so much.

I'd give soloing in PoStorms (various animals) or PoNightmare (Nightstalkers) a shot, just to see how it works for you.

As for 62 vs AA's, that's something you'll have to feel out. In the end, you'll want both, so it's a matter of which route will take you less time. Unless you'd get 62 a good bit faster than AM3, I'd probably get it first, if it doesn't take tooo long. Still, this is judgement call.

Can't help much more, but this is what I can contribute.

Ad 1. Groups ANYWHERE is better than soloing; it's better xp, and more fun.
ad. 2. I'd go to 62, then stay there at least until you have EQ+AM3. Those two really make you a ranger - you'll know why when you get them. Consider getting Headshot, one run through Mines of Nurga (bring a tank) will show you why it is so much FUN to be a ranger.
ad 3. Don't do Planar Progression for the AAs. They are certainly a nice extra prize, but it's like doing Formula One racing for the nice cap you get.
ad 4. DoD... bleh. Dragons of Norrath, and the progression tasks there is easier to comprehend than Planar Progression, can be grouped or even soloed (some of it) and the storyline makes sense.
ad. nothing-in-particular: You'll be tempted to do monster missions. Someone will do their best to lure you in with the promise of easy and fast xp. DON'T DO IT! Do NOT let people cheat you of the experience of exploring Norrath, of falling off bridges in the middle of a fight, of getting lost in a deep dark dungeon, of running from a dragon etc - MMs are the crack of EQ; easy to get hooked, but you'll end up wasting your EQ life on it, because once you are lvl 70/500 AAs, you'll wake up and wonder why you were in such a hurry.

Having just gone through this with my now 62 Ranger I'll post what my experience was.

I stayed in Fungus Grove until I had enough AA's to purchase the AA ability Headshot.

When I got bored of killing Mushrooms I would venture out and find a group for awhile just to recharge my batteries.

Fungus Grove right now is the best solo experience you are going to find. The zone is currently a "Hot Zone", so basically you get double expierence on ever kill you get there. At level 61 each mushroom is about 1.5% AA.

I posted a similiar thread on the Ranger boards and got ideas on a ton of different solo xp options. I tried them all and found Fungus Grove to be the best for me.

So based on all of this, my advice to you, is to stay level 61 and grind out the AAs needed to buy Headshot, don't worry about AM 2 or 3, or anything else. Once you get the AAs you will need to ding level 62 to purchase the Headshot ability.

After you have Headshot you can go hunt in the Mines of Nurga solo, self buffed, and get an AA about every 1.5 hours. There is practically no chance of death, you can hold down 5 different named camps, and pull in tons of platinum from named drops, gem drops, and the pp the gobbies drop.

Headshot in case you didn't know is the chance to instantly kill any mob lower than level 49 with your bow. It's based off of a chance to proc per arrow shot, so a faster bow=faster headshots.

If you like and this interests you, I can send you several links of threads about this very topic.

Good luck and have fun.

Everyone, thanks for all the advice. I went ahead and DINGED to 62 (I was only 25% from 62 when I wrote this). I know have 15 AAs (whoop-dee-doo!) and am 3 from finishing CF3 (I'm assuming from the things I've read that CF3 > three lvl 1's in other Archtype). Then onto either EQ or begin the AM AAs. Suggestions? I have a Tolan's Bracer, so can summon cheap arrows (a pain, yes), so not sure which to go for first. I don't play for 8-10 hours a day (I'm luck to play 1 or 2 - my wife HATES EQ! heheh).

Zabt, I'd really appreciate any other sites/info you could give.

I think I'll primarily always be LFG, but soloing in either PoN, PoS (never been to either) or perhaps FG while LFG. I am in a small-ish quild, but I don't foresee getting in a large one as my play style (and wife) don't allow me to be on at specific times for raids, etc. If my wifes says "get off", I better get off or I may be shopping for a new computer...hmmmmmm... ;)

I think I'll abandon the idea of Planar Progression for now. DoN seems to be dead, but perhaps I can get pick-up groups for those. I don't have a single crystal. Does it matter whether I go Ebon or the other kind? I've thought about buying them, when pp permits, but I have *MAYBE* 3K in the bank - that won't buy many. But my gear is all *OLD* stuff I bought in the bazaar... :(

In any event, thanks for all the advice. I think I'll stick at 62 until I get EQ/AM3/HS. Then start moving towards 70.

Thanks again so much! I'd love more advice!

I think it's pretty important to work on that wife faction so you get to play more at a stretch, and fewer days in a row perhaps. Smiley: lol

Don't worry about getting Headshot if you are trying to level quickly to 70. You won't use it.

Headshot is ideal for level 62 because it allows you to gain AA xp quickly from level 49 mobs. If you don't plan on farming AA's like I am, then just move along.

As far as AA advice, again speaking from recent expierence, Endless Quiver was far and away the best AA I've bought. It is soooo nice not having to stop and summon arrows all the time. And the damage per shot is WAY more with the good arrows.

Here are some links for AA farming with Headshot:

My play style is pretty similar to the OP's, for pretty much the same reasons, hehe.

I read all about the Nurga headshot farming thing at the same stage you're at now, and it seemed like the way to go. But, in the end, I went to Nurga exactly twice. I just couldn't get excited about it, im afraid. Sure you can make some plat. and some aa xp, but for me anyway it was pretty dull. So for me it was a waste of the aa's. I use it occasionaly for shooting Dragorns in draniks Scar, wich sometimes scores an aug, or just some plat.

I would say getting EQ/am3 is the way to go. Once you've got that, its possible to kite murks in NC, while trying for a group in Wall o' Slaughter, wich is a really fast way to get aa's at the low 60's. Good place for gear upgrades too. I grouped with necros in NC sometimes and the aa xp flows then. gem drops are good too.

As far as possible I try to group as much as possible, its more fun. But I have to say that it feels harder to group now at 67, than it was at 57. Everyone wants lvl 70's, and will take a 70 over a 67 anyday. So sometimes soloing is the only choice. If I'm soloing, I always do aa's, at least you see some progress. If i'm grouping, I try to do straight xp. (Also depends where we're hunting of course).

At 62, PoV is definately worth it if you got a ok group. Also Bastion o' Thunder is good at that lvl. And if you get into a group there hunting names, some good gear upgrades can come your way. (Clicky root pants for example. Stll waiting for mine!)

Good Luck

Ps. You wouldn't happen to know Elric would you?? Hehe....\

Pps. Just as an addition....I would seriously reccomend getting innate cammo, before getting anything else, and definately before HS. It changed my game more than anything else. Instant on the run no fail cammo rocks!!! makes pulling less of a lottery, and your group will love you for it.
