I started right after Velious came out. I got a package deal, EQ basic, Kunark and Velious. Before that I was on The Realm for 4 years both as a player and a GM. Friend of mine convinced me that I would love EQ, and I went to his place and tried it out for an hour or two and well...he was right. I have been in EQ ever since, and I believe that was 2001. Went back to The Realm for a while last year (2005) and was impressed on how much content was added, but it didnt do anything for me so I left it again after 2 months and continued with EQ. I will be on EQ until the pull the plug, or they refuse to take my money. (Yea right!!!)

Started out on the Nameless server..then when I got the hang of it, moved over to Xegony, and been there ever since. Just started new toons on Tribunal, love it there. Lots of new and mid level players where Xegony is mostly level 70 now. (Thanks to the DoDH expansion...booo-hisssss)

The network guy where I worked is to blame. I'd catch him of all places here on AllaK and we started talking about EQ. This led into stories of his character and guild and all the stuff they were doing. Of course the stories were filled with words and acronyms I did not understand which opened up the black hole even further as he explained.

I purchased the trilogy package shortly after PoP was released. It was a big advantage having a RL person to guide me in the early days. Of course I took the scenic view down from Kelethin a time or two. After numerous character starts I settled on a cleric and leveled him into the mid 50's before leaving the game.

I have left twice and come back each time, not deleting my characters the second time. I now have a 57 Druid working on Epic 1.0 and a low 30's Monk when I feel the need to smack things around. After many less than stellar experiences in Guilds I have found a fun guild.

This game is no where near perfect and can be frustrating at times but I have yet to find anything that comes close in depth, scope or playability. I have no idea what my /play times are, but I am on for 3 or so hours 2 or 3 nights a week and get in 10 - 12 hours over most weekends. Too much the wife says, but H*** I used to go out drinking that much or more. /shrug

I also built a new computer about a year ago which greatly reduced lag and zoning times but is way overpowered for EQ.

I started playing computer role playing games in 1986. When Everquest came out in 1999, I already had played hundreds of games over the span of a decade. On the back of the Everquest box were in game screen shots and blurbs like; "Play a huge fantasy RPG online with people all over the world in full 3D."

I had no idea that 6 years of my life were about to change.

I started playing when a friend of mine urged me too. I looked into the game before playing and cited every excuse why I shouldnt. But, she called me chicken and dared me to try it for the first free 30 days. If I didnt like it, she'd buy my account and well....( lets just say what she offered was very sweet and would be impolite to say here, lol)

So I bought EQ, hooked it up and played. She hooked me up with some basic gear, and some plat and PL'd me for a few levles til I got the hang of it. I immeadiately liked the game and was sucked into it. But, wanting her to come up with what she offered, hehe, I tried to act like I didnt like the game and was just going through the ropes.

Anyway, she knew I liked it, and to celebrate, she fulfilled the agreement anyway...WooHoo!

But the game was a great thing though, I met my current g/f on EQ and have made alot of really good friends over the years, so I think its time well spent.

I stay playing EQ because its fun. It allows mw an escape from the real world and break the monotonous drone of my life. Besides, I was always a fan of the who warrior/wizard/druid thing anyways...

A co-worker who I had become good friends with invited me over to her place to hang out with her and her boyfriend. I went over and he was playing EQ (this is in 2000, before Velious). Very intrigued, I asked him about it, and he was only too helpful in giving me all the details I needed. He let me create a character and play a little bit, just so I could get a taste. That's all I needed, got the required info to run the game, so I could install it on my g/f's computer. Borrowed money to buy a video card, started playing as soon as I could install it. I was on dial-up, and I got the rep of being perpetually LD, because the g/f's cpu could barely handle EQ. But I still had fun. g/f moved on, so I had to get my own cpu, went the rent to own route for awhile, but that got too spendy when I got fired (not because of slacking for EQ), so I had to take another hiatus. Got my roommate at the time to buy a new computer, and installed EQ on it. I told him to keep it on there when I moved out. I was always babysitting for him anyway, told him it would give me more of an incentive. Finally last summer, I won about 2Gs playing poker online, and got the $$ to purchase my own cpu outright!!! And now I play whenever I want (as long as I can afford the cable modem :))

I didnt want to start EQ at all, as I had been playing single player RPGS since Ultima 3. I was pretty wary of the whole new MMORPG thing, I just thought it wasnt possible to add enough content and I suspected the graphics would suck due to the internet bandwith restrictions of the day. So I waited a year before I tried EQ and I was pretty much hooked from the get-go, although Ive quit many times. Im back now, at least until Vanguard comes out.

I started playing EQ so that one day while in search of answers to questions I would find myself looking at and responding to Allahkazam's message boards. Little did I think that Sir Groogle would be there waiting for me and others to bash their original questions and point out the errors of that question ... but to tell those who had thier own opinion on the subject that they are also wrong in thier opinions.

Ignoring the fact that it was poorly written and just plain wrong, you posted a completely non-relevant post on someone else's topic.

Stop complaining.

Why'd you start playing EQ? My husband let me loot a bat's corpse...appealed to my morbid side.

Did a friend ask you to, were you just into MMORPG's, do you have some stake in it, did it just look neat..? Hubby...kinda helped me not to be an EQ widow

And, hey, why are you still playing it? Because I like the game and some of my good freinds play, as well as a couple of my soldiers.

What do you enjoy about it, and what are your objectives on it? Easy to keep in touch with folks I know in RL, OBJ is to have fun.

Before starting anything else, what's your main's /played look like? (Just to give prospective to those before reading your post.) Main is a red headed (overly) bold ranger who does not die nearly as much as some wizzies.

I met a guy in a little computer store on Vancouver Island , one of those guys who would go off into a tiny, dirty, smoke filled, little room and hibernate while he played Ultima Online for hours and hours. One of those guys who would take a bucket to pee in, rather than leave the keyboard. In the end he lost his wife and the store.

Well, I asked him about the game and compared it to EQ which was only about 6 months old. EQ just BLEW Ultima out of the picture , it was SO much better.

Been playing ever since except for one year when I went cold turkey and stopped playing ( Screwed up my Vet rewards , lol )

I read a magazine article way back in 2000 about a family that played together. Sounded like a fun game. I always like fantasy things and used to play paper D&D as a kid.I started a half elf ranger that kept dying (of course) then switched to a wood elf druid. leveled him to about 15 then switched to a dwarven paladin who is now my main. Been playing off and on over 6 years now and of course buy each expansion even when i wasn't anywhere near the level to play in it. I remember when Kunark came out and setting my first steps there after getting off the boat. Wow was I scared, exploring with no maps or a printed out paper map (still have a notebook full of them). Same feeling when Velious was released and even when I went to the moon with Luclin. Those first tentative steps in a new world were the best.

Back in the day I used to play Neverwinter Nights on AOL, which was pretty cool. I also played on a handful of MUDs but those started dying out. Eventually a friend (from IRC) started playing EQ and I decided to look into it and play with him.

After the initial culture shock of dying repeatedly on the platform city of Kelethin (great place for true newbies to start, eh?) I was given a boatload of gear my said friend, which I then promptly lost on a corpse I couldn't find (in GFay). After being told that their guild needed a cleric and they'd help me level it, I never saw him (or the guild) in game and proceeded on my own. This was back in early 2000.

I played NWN too, and had Guildmates who stayed in touch and moved from one game to the next looking for the next game that would have the same strong community that we had in NWN. I can remember crying because I wasn't able to get online the day AOL pulled the plug on server.

We all tried to stay in touch online over the years, but there where months that I couldn't afford an isp. After coming back online in 1999, I mention on the guild boards that I was going to ask the kids if we could get EQ for Christmas. It would have ment no other presentes under the tree that year, but I miss getting in game with my guildmates.

One of the member of my guild, asked if he could play Santa for us, as he had an extra copy of eq. As soon as I got ingame with Primrose, I was surrounded by guildmates who had my woodelf druid trinked in seconds. My second toon Ellyn, was created so I could have a non trinked, so to learn the game. She was deleted to make room for a Halfing Ranger, who I did allow guildmates to give old gear they didn't need.

Sadly Wunderful died a couple of years later. My daughters and I will always remember him as Wuner Claus. He also made a few bro's beautiful bows.

I've played eq on and off since then, but never seem to get far with any of my toons, since rest of guild was always at least 20 levels above me and I often would find myself in too much pain to try pick up groups. When most of the guild went to WoW, I try to play on Cazic Thule, but game wasn't the same with out the guild to chat with.

Primrose, a member of The Brotherhood of Pathfinders, since 1994.
ElneClare member of The Protectorate since 1996

Now Primrosex of Aude Sapere as SOE added the 'x' when I had her moved to Povar and no one has reported her yet.

I played EQ for a couple years. I havent played in about a year now. Have a 56 druid, 55 chanter, 52 warrior and cleric and a 35 necro. Dont even know if my stuff is still there. I have thought about logging on to see but last time i did nothing had changed. Still sitting around lfg and hardly anyone on. When my server merged it rocked groups everywhere then it faded again. I got tired of not ony paying the monthly fee but the expansions as well, ridiculous.. I almost started back up but guys at worked talked me into trying WoW and honestly dont know if i can go back to EQ, even though i do think about all the time i have invested in EQ. I think i would have stayed with EQ if they just wouldnt have chared for the expansions, just way to much money to invest. I like WoW alot but it has some problems as well.
