I have never really been interested in PL'ing, because i have wanted for my characters to get up the "real" way, and experience grouping and different zones.

I recently bought EQ for a friend as a present, and he seems interested in playing. I want to quicky get him to the mid teens so he can group with my lowest characters.

I was just wondering, how do you powerlevel someone? I have noticed from grouping, that if there is a person 5+ levels above you in your group, then you wont get exp. What is the best way to Powerlevel someone. (Keep in mined this is only like 12 levels. Im not trying to get him to level 60 or anything.)

Get out your druid or w/e you plan to PL with and take her and your friend to Kurns tower... buff up your friend with regen, DS, skin buff and everything, heal and refresh buffs when needed. It is rather easy and if you are on the Tunare server I can do it for you with my 46 druid lol. You will be able to stay in Kurns all the way to twelve.

Kurn's tower was the place i was planning on going :), the only problem is I dont have any druids :( All my chars are melee or hybrid, so i might ask guildie or, since im on Povar and high level clerics and Druids ahng out there and buff people on Pover, might see if anyone can buff him. Also, taking into account that I dont have any good classes for PL'ing, I decided I might just get him to go through Tutorial. Isnt exactly the same, but still realy quick exp.

You wont be doing your friend any favors. Why dont you start a new character just to take him through the few levels of the tutorial? Then when you both are ready to leave that zone, you can run to kurns.
MY GOD a level 5 with temp is a powerlevel in and of itself.

Forgot to leave you the formula for grouping with each other and getting exp.
It will be 1/2 the lower level added plus one. Ie a level 5 or 6 could group with a level 9. A level 40 with a level 61.

temp works just fine. you can also ask high level druids or shamans for buffs.

Try on your parent's clothes - ds/heal/snare with a ranger, slow/crip/heal with a bst, buff/heal with a pally ...

Deo, what I don't understand is: (a) you say you bought it for a friend and (b) you say YOUR PC is crappy, so the tutorial doesn't work. how does that relate?

I can only second Jonwin. Leave your friend alone for a while, but be on standby (phone, right at his desk, chat) in case he has QUESTIONS. Do NOT PL or twink him. Else it is very likely you ruin your friends expectations/gameplay experience.

there are some good PL guides out there, which I don't want to link here. Smiley: tongue

good luck though, as playing with somebody you know is great Smiley: smile

Yep, I don't think Powerleveling is the way to give your friend a good taste of EQ.

I would:
a)start a toon with your friend and go through the tutorial - if you can (can you even upgrade your memory in your computer anymore? that would help some, of course a vid card may do the trick too). If you can't do the tutorial I would start both toons with the same home city - so basically the same race - do the newbie armor quests.

or

b)have your friend take a toon through the tutorial and you wait with a complimentary toon at level 10 for him to finish, then duo whereever from there. He'll learn the basics of the game without anyone around pressuring him, getting impatient etc.

Get some temp and go to the back side of PC if you want to level quick, but, agian, I would avoid actual PLing.

Getting a toon to the 'mid teens' should not take more than a few days, and you do not need 'powerleveling'. Just hit the zem zones, for a few hours.

Kurns, Crushbone, Paludal, Unrest are good places for under 20 characters.

If you have (OoW?) some recent expansions, do some tasks. They give great xp for the level.

Power-leveling as most define it is basically casting a high-level Damage Shield on the leveler and making sure he does at least one point of damage. The higher level character (druid) keeps the lower one(s) healed and is not in the same group. Typical PLers will use mobs MUCH higher level than the levelers to achieve fast results and to get to levels much higher than 'mid teens'.

Seems PL'ing has been pretty hot over the last 2 weeks or so on MS.

If I dont go /role and am in POK I get at least one (if not more) tell a night offering me Plat to PL toons. Usually its like 1k per level or 10k an hour...so far I haven't been bored enough to say yes to any of em.

Anyone else seeing this kind of activity on other servers?

Yeah, I thought about having a level 10 toon waiting for him at the end of the tutorial that could group together, but I like the idea of starting a whole new toon with him. His play times are more limited, so I could play my main we he isnt oon, and play with him when he is. He wants a Dark Elf Necro so I could make a brother Dark Elf or someone in Freeport and he could come to commonlands.

About the tutorial not working, I have 256 RAM. Does anyone know if that is enough to run the new tutorial? Also I have a GeForce 2 vid card. Im guessing PoK not working might just be b/c of the amounts of people there.

edit: what I don't understand is: (a) you say you bought it for a friend and (b) you say YOUR PC is crappy, so the tutorial doesn't work. how does that relate?

It relates beacuse I cant do the tutorial w/ him

I have gotten a few blind offers to PL people. Not much in the game is less appealing. I can't even stand PL-ing my own toons, and I can box a 65-druid or 65-cleric with them!

No, I always politely decline.

This is what SOE is recommending for minimum system requirements:

Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP
Pentium® III 400 equivalent or greater
256 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 7500/NVidia GeForce 1 equivalent or greater
DirectX Compatible Sound Card
28.8k + Internet Connection
4X Speed CD-ROM
500 MB Hard Drive Space
DirectX 9.0

If your video card is 128mb it's probably ok, I believe the GeForce 2 comes in 128mb or 64mb flavors. If you can though upgrade your card to 256 and get as much RAM as you can.

I recently upgraded ram to 1 gig and was amazed at the difference it made.

The tutorial would be alot of fun if you could get in with your buddy. You can burn through to level 10, do all the quests, get some decent gear and put a few plat in your pocket...all in one long evening. Duoing it is challenging but very doable.

Good luck. (a pair of Dark elves would be pretty cool. Smiley: wink)

ah, now I getcha.

as to tutorial and 256 MB RAM, well, I guess not. if yer old enough, I guess (try to) get a (part time?) job and earn some money. upgrading it to 512 MB shouldn't cost ye too much, maybe 50 bucks? that will help tremendously, trust me...
good luck Smiley: smile

take your main, go slaughter the orcs in EC. save the belts, give to your friend to hand in (if this isn't busted because of new freeport). this lvls them fast but they of course will have no skills and will need to work casting as well.

i got my cleric to lvl 12 this way in a couple of minutes. the cleric is my main now. so i got over the lack of skills and casting abilities. i farmed the belts with my "main" at that time, and purchased them in the bazaar as well. if i remember right it was around 30 belts to get from lvl 1 to lvl 12.

Keyera your suggestion would be ok if his friend wasnt going to play a DE necro who would last all of 1 hit inside a Freeport militia aggro range.
For that reason crushbone belts are out as well.

Rat whiskers may work for the exterminator, but you wont really level that way.

A more adventuresome person would look over on the faction table and look up the different factions involved, however, I believe it is not being a dark elf that will instantly cause a problem. It is in being a necro. Bertoxx and/or Inny worship does cause a problem or they would not be hidden in the sewers.
Secondly the Knights now walk patrols through East Freeport, though I dont know if they come near the new militia patrols.
I also don't know if the captain is still in EFP or whether he moved to West Freeport along with Sir Lucan.
Of course the Steel Warriors are still in East Freeport.

Another possibility, is PLing in Overthere. I haven't tried this yet myself, but my plan is to have my boxed cleric hunt in the easy section of OT (in the corner by the ocean) to work on skills. My chanter runs around the zone aggroing all the berserkers I can find back to that easy area. I then kill all the berserkers with my chanter and let my cleric (dark elf) loot all the braids and do the turn in in OT.

If I recall correctly, the braid turn ins were pretty decent exp at lower levels.

i usually use my 70 ranger.. well thats the only i character i ever use =P
well i just heal the guy... make sure he has temp it adds like 800 hp.. and get him a good damage sheild those help a BUNCH... i soloed the whole TR in CB with a 7 warrior with 800 hp and a goood ds...oh ya if he has a DS on make sure he gets a hit on every mob cause if the DS does all the work onjust say one mob... he wont get exp for it

Groogle, You are correct in your memory. I was wrong about a necro being kos to the militia. Dark elves are not automatically kos to the militia so the deathfist belts can be turned into capt hazran.
He has been moved to west freeport along with sir lucam

Since nobody wanted to give you any actual tips on how to PL, I figured I would. This might be rather long, but I will try to explain how I PL. I use a level 70 druid to do this. You don't have to have one that high, it does help however. First things first have your friend gear up in baz gear. Obviously have him get the highest HP items he can afford. If you don't have the money, no big deal, just buy some plat. It's cheap as hell on most servers, averaging around $25 US dollars per 100k. Once I have him geared up, take him to any newbie yard and get to about level 4 or so, then head to PC. I cast the following spells on him: Chloroplast, Skin Like Nature, and Shield of Thorns. If you find yo need a strength buff to help him get a few hits in then cast Storm Strength on him. Most times, the first 3 spells are all you need. All you need to do is hit the mob for 1 point of damage and let the damage shield do the rest. I follow behind him, casting a fast heal whenever needed. In PC go up the ramp past the first bandit camp and take the first tunnel to your right. Follow that area a ways until you come to a small lake with around 20 or so Patog Phlarg Fiends or whatever they are called. You can continuosly circle that lake, healing and refreshing the DS until the toon is around level 15. After you leave PC I normally either head to Netherbian Lair for a few levels, following the same strategy as PC. If I dont feel the urge to do NL ( I don't like the cramped area) then I head to Marus Seru. If you are powerleveling a toon that has a point-blank-area-effect (pbae) spell it only gets easier from here on out. If they don't get a pbae follow the same strategy as before, only in Marus Seru I find I have to snare the mobs once they hit low health. If you find that your PL'ee can't hit a snared mob at low health, cast the spell Savage Roots on it. It is a root that does 0 damage, and the mob will always fight the closest person, i.e. the Damage Shielded Pl'ee. Do Marus Seru until about 22-24 or so, although exp slows down around 22. Next head to Dawnshroud Peaks. As soon as you zone into DSP from NL if you follow the creek you will hit a small field with tons of zelniaks. The zelniaks are great to PL on, as they don't have that many HP and don't hit all that hard. If you don't feel like zelniaks, then go near the Griegs End zoneline and kill Sambata tribal workers. I normally kill in DSP until the upper 20's to lower 30's. Next I head to Gulf of Gunthak. The beach with all the undead is a great place to PL since they don't run at low health. Just pick a spot and use the same strategy, killing whatever you see. As you get into the middle 30's you may want to move to the tunnel going to Dulak Harbor. If you find that Gunthak is overly camped I recommend heading to Scarlet Desert as an option. That zone is deserted 24/7 on The Nameless. I can't imagine it would be camped on other servers, as there is nothing there worth fighting other than a few quest mobs. In SD I always take a right upon entering and run up the wall a ways, then pull whatever mobs are in range. You can go all the way to the upper 40's in SD. In Gunthak I usually go to around 43 or so before heading to Dulak. Once you get into the upper 40's the exp slows down, but there are still decent spots to PL all the way up to middle to upper 50's. If I am really bored I take the character to Acrylia Caverns and kill grimlings, although they do tend to take you down fast if you have a few of them on you. After the upper 50's and lower 60's your PL'ing is pretty much over, then it's time to group. I also want to show you how if you are PL'ing a pbae class how easy it is to level. Pick a zone that is wide open, has lots of mobs, and they con at least blue to the person you are PL'ing. I like the beach at Gunthak, Marus Seru, and Scarlet Desert since they are wide open (with the exception of Gunthak). Using my druid I get the best HP buff available, either my own Steeloak, or cleric buffs. Then I put a regen on me, sow, Nettlecoat, and Nettle shield, and finally I drink a Shaman Damage Shield potion. I run around and cast snare on any mob I can find, dragging as many mobs as I want along with me. I try to pull at least 40-50 mobs at a time when doing this. Once I have all the mobs rounded up in a nice tight circle I have the person I am PL'ing step in and cast his lowest PBAE spell one time on the mobs. Sometimes a few mobs will resist him, but they normally always hit the majority of the mobs. As soon as they cast the spell they need to get back fast before the mobs aggro on them. I then let the mobs beat on me, letting my damage shield take them down. I usually use my spirit of the grove AA which adds more to my DS and heals me. If I start to get too low I run back until I am far enough from the mobs to heal myself. The whole pack dies rather quickly and the person you are PL'ing gets around 1-2 yellows of exp per pull. Rinse and repeat until you are done PL'ing.
That is how I do it, you can obviously interchange levels and zones to what you like and however many people are in the zones. I know those zones are not the Hotzones or anything, they are just what I am familiar with, so I stick with them. Don't let these other people talk you out of Powerleveling. There is nothing wrong with it, if you want to do it, then do it. Too many of these Nancy Boys ***** and whine if you even think of mentioning what they think of as the Taboo subjects such as PL'ing, buying accounts, or buying plat. I do all three, and sell all three also. Play the game like you want to play it and don't let the bleeding vaginas talk you out of it.
