Everquest Patcher Freak OutFollow

#1 Jan 30 2006 at 4:05 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, this is really weird. I downloaded the update for the new expansion and all "heck" has broken loose on my computer since. First, when I restarted my computer the everquest patcher is launching all by itself. WTF is that all about. But it gets better. My McAfree software got itself somehow shut down in the process and I had to reinstall that. On top of all that I was getting this message upon rebooting as well, "that c:\program needed to be renamed to c:\program1 to fix a problem" and I had the choice to do that or ignore. So of course before I went to work this morning I tried checking on a fix for it with the EQ box repoping up every 5 minutes after I cancelled and closed the box. So I uninstalled EQ from the install/uninstall function. That didnt stop the EQ patch program from loading so I had to delete my everquest folder. WOW!! So is it just me or is anybody else asking help from tech??? Oh and by the way I used "hijackthis" and it didnt show anywhere how in the heck that the launcher program was starting which makes this even stranger.

sounds like like someohow your eq patch is in your start up menu.

goto: start/search/type in msconfig/ run msconfig/ uncheck the eq patcher file.

I got to talk to tech and his reply was to shut off my mcafee fire wall as 90% of the time that's the problem. I almost had to go change my pants on that one (I guess anybody can get a job doing tech) as I told the guy that it was launching at the boot up of windows. Thanks for the advice of checking the startup but it wasnt in there either I took it one step further and used the hijackthis program which shows all programs that start at bootup and didnt find it. I will cross my fingers when I do the reinstall of EQ and do the updates and hope that it doesnt happen again. Everything had beeen fine with my McAfee SecurityCenter and EQ prior to the most recent updates that I had gotten just yesterday with the files for the new expansion as well.

I am in the process of doing a complete install and I even had done as the Sony rep (if that what he was) said and removed the launchpad key in the registry with regedit. After installing my EQ discs and downloading "EQ Launchpad" file from sony as the one that comes on the disc wont download anything as it is outdated I got the same error upon rebooting my computer, "there is a file c:/program that needs to be renamed to c:/program1 to fix an issue" and of course my McAfee SecurityCenter shut down again as well. What ever is in the recent updates must be sharing a .DLL file or sony must have accidently used the same file name and location as McAfee as I looked once again in the startup using msconfig and "launchpad.exe" is not in there not to mention McAfee going down while "EQ is already running" also pops up on my screen. I think I got the fix for it whenever it is down downloading. I'll just need to redownload the McAfee from comcast again. Hopefully. If it works I'll update the thread. If anyone else had gotten a work around please let me know. Thanks.

Ok after seeing the message a good ummmmmmm 20 times through the reboots I decided to write it down just in case it will help someone else here it is...

File Name Warning

There is a file or folder on your computer called "C:\program" which could cause certain applications to not function correctly. Renaming it to "C:\program1" would solve this problem, would you like to rename it now?

I shut down all of the startup programs (hence getting to see the message 20 times, more actually) one by one and yet the launchpad was still starting up everytime on its own. I had to go into the services tab of msconfig and shut down any program that wasn't microsoft to stop it. I then turned them back on one by one to find out that the service that was cross linked is:

McAfee WSC Intergration

The only file that I could find under the registry editor was "McDetect.exe". I searched further by that but could not find any other files linked to it although "c:\program" must be through a .DLL somehow.

I will give an additional update after I get the final patch and then reinstall McAfee to see if it fixes my problem. Hope this helps anybody else who has the complete McAfee Suite as I do from Comcast my internet/cable provider, although I certainly hope that Sony fixes this in their next patch.

In order to give yourself the "fix" you need to delete the "c:\program" file that is being created for whatever reason from the update that does a crazy tie in with McAfee virus scan and only one program can run which somehow the launchpad file is it. Hopefully from my posts here and on EQ tech they update the patches and get rid of whatever is doing this. Good luck and happy hunting all.

Thanks for the informative posts jwbradd. I had a similar problem with the free antivirus program AVG way back when PoP was released, and it was maddening!. Good job with the detail on both the error and fix: I gave you an excellent on your ratings!
