If you have a damage shield, any time a monster hits you, they take damage. So if you have a damage shield of 12, every single time you get hit, the monster takes another 12 damage. Monsters can also have damage shields that will hurt you when you hit them.

Damage Shields (DS) are spells or now items with it that cause your skin to grow Thorns or turn to Fire, ect. So when anything hits you they take some damage doing so. Mages, Druis, Rangers are the biggest casters of DS on other members. Clerics can cast spells on mobs that will hurt the mob whenever it hits anyone called a reverse DS. Also they can cast a Healing Shield (For lack of a better name) on a mob that will heal a few points to anyone that hits the mob. There are potions thar Shaman make, Items that can be looted, quested or even purchased that can bestow a DS on you

Some items have a "stat" that says +5 Damage Shield, of course the number may vary.

That stat adds that many points to any damage shield you have up. So a 12 point Damage Shield becomes a 17 point damage shield. These do nothing at all unless you have a damage shiled buff active on you.

however

worn DS requires you to have a spell DS cast on you before it will work.

so if you have a item with +5 DS, it will not work untill you get a spell DS cast on you. it will then stack with whatever spell cast on you.

a good quest to get your self a spell DS is the coldain ring quests. it is an insta cast +8 DS (with ring 8, goes to 10 with the 10th ring).

i know i was soloing this quest at lvl 60. so isn't too bad, just takes a few tricks. i have done the quest prob 15 times. an insta cast buff "used" to be very important.

if need some pointers on doing this quest let me know.

but a simple way is to just buy a potion in the bazar, kiva skin of flame for example. that will then stack and avtivate any worn DS you have.

Last note is that Damage Shields do "neutral" damage. You know how the player/group/raid that does the most damage to a MOB gets the EXP for its death? Well..
If Bob and Dave are ungrouped:

Bob hits a bettle for 2 damage.
A bettle hits Bob for 1 damage.
A bettle is pierced by thorns for 2 damage.
Dave hits a bettle for 3 damage.
A bettle has been slain by Dave!

So, Bob did 4 damage to the bettle (2 from hit + 2 from DS)
Dave did 3 damage to the bettle (3 from hit).
Who gets the EXP?
Dave does.
Although Bob did do four damage, the DS doesn't count. He only did two damage.

Normally, this is a technicallity, because it seems to only matter if people are trying to kill steal or a duo of groups outside raid. Its just important because of power leveling.

If Noob is fighting a skeleton:
A skeleton hits a noob for [does it really matter?]
A skeleton has been pierced by thorns for 674 damage!*
A skeleton has been slain!

So, the noob did 674 damage to the skeleton. But all in DS, so it counts as 0. Hence, the Noob doesn't, nor does anyone else, get experience. Also, looting rights go to whoever gets experience. Because no one does, the corpse poofs (disappears completely). Its just important to keep this in mind while PLvling (or being PLvl'd), to know that the noob must do at least 1 damage to the MOB directly to get experience.

*Yes, this is very easily possible. A lvl 65+ Druid can give a noob 674 DS in two castings. Playing on the PvP server with my Druid, I'm very well acquianted with this fact.. but it seems to surprise the noob PKs every time when they just hit my lowbie guildie and die. :P

Btw, I was looking back up, and I wanted to clarify- the damage shield does damage in response to melee damage, and melee damage only.

If you hit something with a sword, hammer, hands, etc, the damage shield will reflect damage back at you for however much its for (how hard you hit the creature with the Damage Shield doesn't matter in this calculation). If you Dual Wield it or Double Attack it, you'll get hit by the DS twice, effectively taking twice the damage. At high levels, its possible for a Ranger to hit a single creature up to 21** times in one volley.. such a Ranger would take twenty-one times the damage from the DS.

If a creature is hit with a bow or thrown weapon, the damage shield is ignored.
If a creature is hit with a spell, the damage shield is ignored.
If a creature is hit with an effect from weapon, the damage shield is ignored.

**I realize this is hard to believe, so I'll not explain how here.. rather, whoever can think of how this might happen first wins some sort of prize. (If you already know how this may be done, please don't spoil the fun :P) This IS without factoring in Procs or Damage Shields.. I dare not considering exactly how many hits could come if those counted. Additionally, note that the chance of this is.. well.. the stars will aline before this actually happens, its only possible.. theortically.
