a few friends and i left the game pretty soon after ldon came out and we are considering starting back up again. we started playing WoW and enjoyed it but we really miss eq. i was just wondering if it was worth getting back into and how much has changed since the beginning of ldon. one of the reasons we left was because everyone was ridiculously twinked. are there many new servers where we could avoid that at least slightly? and last thing: i want to start new accounts but they want to buy a few high level ones so we can keep up somewhat, what should we do?
Don't waste your money buying accounts.
It's against the rules.
There will be little to no attachment for that character. More often than not, you will end up playing a character you raised from scratch, instead.
There are no new servers as all servers were recently merged due to lack of populations.
Twinking has become more apparent with the last 3 or so expansions.

So you left because of twinking but want to come back and buy twinked out characters?
Sounds like you and your friends want the "gimme gimme" MMO. EverQuest wasn't your game to begin with, and it certainly isn't the game for you now.
Stick with WoW.

The majority of servers were merged and I am not aware of any new ones (though there could be). LDON gear is completely out of date with much better and easier (tradable mission points in the form of crystals) gear available.
Twinking is well established since the majority of lower characters seem to be alts of higher ones.
I personally don't belive in buying accounts. Up to you and your friends. Buying an unneeded drop from a high level player does not bother me at all. Buying that high level characters account is kind of defeats the purpose and accomplishment in playing in my view.
The OP did indicate that he/she wanted to start new accounts but the others wanted to buy accounts, so I think Nohk's attack is a little unfair.
Nohk still did make some good points about whether or not to start your own accounts. I would never want to buy an account because it isn't a character you leveled, named or had any fun playing to it's current point. I'm not sure why you would be worried about whether there is twinking on a certain server, because it sounds like you have at least 2 other friends going on this venture with you, and a group of 3 people can level up to the mid-40s or even higher, depending on class selection, fairly quickly. Once you get to the 40s & 50s, twinking becomes less apparent and how you play your character becomes more important.
My recommendation is to come back to EQ but only if your friends are willing to put in a little work to build up some new characters. You'll find it's a fun experience to go through a lot of the low level content if you're willing to avoid the normal grind path of tutorial -> PC -> Echo Caverns, etc. and actually explore some of the other zones that aren't over-camped.

i appreciate it. you're all right about buying accounts, it's worthless. a few of my friends have done it in the past. i've stayed away personally and i think im going to stay away.
Don't forget the original owner can yank a bought account back at any time.
And SOE could decide to ban the account, though that one is not common I am sure.

They cant yank an account if you change everything, but yeah buying an account is kinda blech..

If they have the origional credit card number then they can yank the account back.
