Targetting terror.....Follow

#1 Dec 21 2005 at 9:37 AM Rating: Decent
I've been away from eq for like a year playing WoW its lame i'm comeing back to eq lol, but it seems like targetting has become a terror in this game i dont remember it being that bad has WoW just spoiled me? I play in a third person view and am constantly targetting myself when trying to click on things anywhere near me in veiw. Looting /groan...... i inspect myself 3-4 times everytime i try to loot something is there anyway to make it so you can't click on yourself like WoW if something is standing infront of you you can actualy click it thru your own body cause the curser ignores your toons body.

I'd actually like to know this as well. I have found some hot-keys that can be used to target the nearest monster, or the nearest player, eetc, but using the mouse would be better I think.

If you can spend the time to set it up, you can set your favorite view to hotkeys, or a certain key stroke so you can cycle thru the 3rd person view and back to first without going thruogh all the other views, first person view is best for targeting IMHO. Also use /assist to help with targeting, , and F8 is also usueful. F8 will ony target nearest forward mob, not self or PC.

Six years in the damn game and I did not know about F8...god, I feel really stupid now. Been "mousewheelin" between first and third to target and to fight. Smiley: motz

At least I am not too old to learn. Smiley: grin

I'm also a 3rd person player (except when looting as mentioned above, lol). I'd agree with hotkeys for cam views... I use one to snap me back into first person view when needed.

Instead of using F8 (select nearest NPC), I use the cycle option. It's one of the target options that is NOT associated with any default key and must be setup. It's called something like "cycle through nearest NPCs" and there's also a "cycle through nearest PCs". Both have been invaluable to me.

With my movement keys keyed to A,S,D and W, I have the cycle target keys set to "e" and "E" (though you could do F8 and Shift-F8 just as easily). For me, being able to quickly toggle through PCs and NPCs makes a world of difference, especially when dealing with hairy situations that demand quick targetting.

Forgot to mention to the OP, /toggleinspect off... that'll prevent self-inspections, but you'll still find looting in 1st person view much easier.

I added space bar to my cycle target command, find it lots easier than F8.

I use third person, and on my necro to loot corpses I have a hotkey like this:
/assist %m
/pause 5
/loot

This assists my pet (who still has the corpse targeted after the mob dies) and loots it. No mouse involed. I have to target myself before hitting it the first time I use it in a zone but after that it remembers my pet's name. If I do loot by mouse I stand so that the corpse is beside me and my character isn't blocking it. I still inspect myself a lot, but its easier than switching back to first person.

Does anyone have the hotkey syntax to cycle through nearest NPC/PC? I thought there was a way to do this but I was never able to find an applicable command to do the operation. Once I get this done, my shaman will finally be able to slow 2-3 mobs all clumped together in a timely fashion :) Thanks in advance!

I don't know if there is or not. You can however set it to be any key you want in your options. I use the cycle NPC all the time to quickly lock down mobs with mezz.

You can find the cycle targets key and choose a new key by going to ALT-O (options). I think the default is the regular keyboard "-", not the numbumberpad "-" or at least that is what mine is set to currently.

Thanks very much for the assistance. All this time I thought it was /command that needed to be done through a hotkey. I had never bothered to look in the Options. Just for clarification, there was no default key selected but I quickly assigned one.
