Feedback requested for guild ideaFollow

#1 Oct 16 2005 at 9:21 PM Rating: Decent
I'm thinking about starting a new guild and would like any feedback that folks would be willing to give. Right now I'm just trying to get a feel if the idea would work, and if there was enough interest to fill the ranks. I'm not currently recruiting.

I have a full outline for the guild posted here if you would like to take a look:

http://strommlotto.proboards27.com

"The concept of the guild is this: Start at level 1 with a new toon, then level your toon without using any bazaar gear, bazaar spells, or powerleveling. Once the guild has sufficient numbers of leveled players, it will begin to raid, starting with some Velious targets and all Luclin targets. The guild will progress through all content, completely ignoring the economic side of Everquest. This will hopefully narrow the guild's attention onto what some of us feel is the "core" and "pure" part of Everquest, notably, raiding."

The guild is tentatively destined to begin on the Stromm server if I choose to recruit for it.

Thanks.

I commend you for your intent, but I think that, barring an abnormal amount of purist players on Stromm, it'll flop.

However, I do wish you the best of luck.

I would think on FV you'd have better luck. No temptations from higher level alts. Presumably more people interested in the lore and questing etc. But maybe not????

The nature of the guild is such that I have the luxury to recruit on all servers for the guild, so not really an issue that I'd need to find people on just one server.

Hmm, I did sort of forget about FV though....that may be an idea for where the guild should go. I picked stromm because I have friends there and the community is decent, plus I'm thinking it is less crowded at the top than other servers given that it is one of the newest, but, i've never done a study to verify.

Ack, never mind....haha, that'd be really stupid to go to FV, given that there isn't any no-drop loot there!

Err yeah. FV has more loot whores and temptation than any server. Abolutely the worst server to try this. Good luck.

There have been quite a few guilds with very similar rules over the years.

I haven't seen much of them around.

Good luck.

Hehe, on just about every message board I've posted on, it is "good idea, won't work". But aren't good ideas supposed to work? So then I'm forced to think that it is a bad idea because it won't work. But I know it isn't a bad idea. Hmm.

I need to find some ppl who are fed up with WoW and lure them back to EQ with my plan :p

The reason it doesn't work that well is, at first glance it seems like it would be really fun to play a toon the 'old school' way.

It is for a while! Then, as the toon gets older, you begin to realize how better some changes have made things. People start to get frustrated doing things the old way and migrate back to the current way of playing.

Running from Qyenos to Freeport is fun the first time, but after that..it's so much nicer to just use the PoK books.

Well, I never intended this idea to be an old-school type guild. Running from Freeport to Qeynos--no thanks. I'd be excited when we started keying for Emp and would honestly like to spend as little time as possible in oldworld/kunark/velious.

The main reason such guilds dont last is that the time invested (ie "the grind") to get the gear to enable you to do the raids and to survive, is more than if you take advantage of gear upgrades from the bazaar. Heck, I started out Jonwin using mostly quested or paying folks to make some armor. You can be sure when I was in EC and heard a deal on something I could actually afford I bought it. Doing so just made the game a bit easier.
That reason is why all my new characters start off with hand me downs from Jon or Courtin, or spend a few hundred plat in the bazaar.

Well, two of my characters are in an old school guild similar to what you describe. Povar. The guild is pretty much dead. It's great in theory but their are not that many players that really want to play that way, and the temptations to take the bazaar path are great. NOTE - nothing wrong with Bazaar twinking IMO. It's your game, play how you like.

One of my old school characters is a Cleric. I was fine within the guild, but when I couldn't play with guildies guess what? A Cleric without KEI can't keep up with healing characters with Temp and Virtue in a pick-up group. My other is a Ranger. Once again fine in Guild, but who wants a Rng with level appropriate weapons/gear when everyone else has uber weapons and gear? Yes I could have kept a separate set of gear, but the guild had sworn off twink gear and twink buffs. Can't tell you how many times I've clicked off very nice buffs.

It was really hard to play outside the guild. At peak we had about 50 members with about 12 "regulars". It was relatively hard to put together groups on a regular basis. In the end most drifted off to the Bazaar. I still wear my guild tag on those two, hoping things will change. From what I've seen everybody talks about the "good old days" but not many really want to go back. Best to just find a few folks to group with who will accept you as you are and go with it.

Still looking for a family guild on Povar that won't have a cow if I decide to play chess instead of go on a guild raid.

Personally I like the idea...everything except the not-twinking part. As said above, it would take WAY too long to properly gear people for raids on CoM and seb and epic raids and the like. And then what do you expect to do in Luclin with kunark or pre-kunark gear?

I would join this guild, but only if we were allowed to twink :P Theres nothing wrong with twinking...personally I'd LOVE to start at Kunark raiding and work my way up to PoP with some guildies, as it seems no low-tier guilds are around.

I'm on bristlebane...started playing wednesday, level 32 atm.
Gotta love MMs
Were you to start a guild like this on my server, I would join in a heartbeat...but I would probably be kicked out if the no-twinked rule stayed.
If you create this guild on bristlebane, let me know.

I think it would be possible only if you had a very large number of players. Then it would be possible to gear up through raiding and get gear that is above your level. Also leveling will take a very long time compared to what we are used to now (which seems very slow).

I guess you could do monster missions all the way up and level quickly with no gear (j/k)

As a player who started Everquest on Day 1 of its release, I feel this is an iaccurate assumption. The economy is also a "core" and "pure" part of the games design. The evidence can be seen in the fact that on day 1, there was currency, vendors and tradeable dropped loot. Before the Bazaar and depending on your server, zones like East Commonlands and North Freeport had 400 people in them 24 hours a day spamming in /ooc there goods.

Even on day 1. I walked with 3 friends from North Qeynos, to Qeynos Hills, to West Karana. That was a huge and dangerous adventure at that time. We managed to break, after many deaths, a bandit camp and we held it, killing them as they popped. Rawhide gloves dropped. I happily equipped it. Another rawhide glove dropped, the other non caster in the group equipped it. Then, another rawhide glove dropped and we decided "Let's sell it to a vendor and split the profit."

This little long winded story is only one of many that people have.

It is a perfectly valid idea to ignore trading, buying and selling but that would be ignoring a core part of Everquests gameplay.
