Character question from EQ noobFollow

I picked up Everquest platinum and am going to give it a try. I play EQ2 and SWG now and since EQ is included in Station Pass I figured why not? ;)

I consider myself a career soloer. I don't mind tough games: I soloed a red mage in FFXI for a long time before leaving when the economy went too far out of whack.

I like to be able to explore and engage in at least some melee with mobs. The idea of rooting something and waiting for it to die with DoT's never really appealed to me (I got my RDM to the point where he could melee very well - better than a lot of warriors fresh from the dunes anyway *grin*)

I've tried reading on line guides but am having a hard time figuring out which info is current and which are not. It seems SOE is or has overhauled a lot (maybe similar to what they did in EQ2)?

Which classes or class race combo's would be feasible for me to play and have a decent chance of having fun? The Iksar health regen sounds very nice, but elves are better looking...

If you want to cast AND to melee AND to solo, I would tell you to choose a Shaman or a Beastlord (as I did). Those two classes are absolutely able to solo, as well to tank and have nice spells.

Okay now to address soloing (I got threads mixed up eh).

I've successfully soloed with a Wizard, a Beastlord and a Ranger.

Wizard needs a mob that doesn't summon and can be rooted and/or snared. Wizards also need some room to kite the mob as their nukes take a bit to land. Wizards squish easy, but nuke fast and furiously. Wizards and druids can quad kite. Something I've found to be of limited use excepting on lower level mobs.

Beastlord is powerful especially at the lower and mid levels. Can solo most anywhere as long as a running mob won't bring in adds. I've had good luck in dungeons with the Beastlord.

Ranger has been my favorite toon to solo with. Ranger can take on most any mob within reason, but only one or two before being out of mana and low on health. If fear kiting however she can go non-stop. With lev, camo and track she's good for exploring and with her myriad choice of spells and abilities fun for experimenting. If I have a specific mob I want dead, I can mess around with lots of different ways to pull it and kill it and eventually succeed. I also like watching her as she shoots her bow and melees with such class. Smiley: waycool

Generally Necro's are the best soloer's.

If you want all of the above, melee, solo and spell casting, I second and third a beastlord. With their pets as either added dps or as the tank, they can be formidable. They also can slow, haste, dot and have good buffs. If you can do without the melee, necro all the way. From what I've seen and read, they can be unstoppable. I have both a necro and beastlord as alts that I currently play and both are incredibly fun. They make me wish I'd chosen a different main.

My 2 mains that I 2 box are a Shammy and a Monk. Since you probably don't 2 box the beastlord is no doubt a good choice Beastlords are a cross between a Shaman and Monk with an awesome pet to boot. the pets do a large amount of damage and you have quite a few races to choose from. Depending on how fast you plan on leveling you might want to pick the vah Shir for the lack of Xp penalty. Trolls and Iksar have regen but are hated every where. Ogres are dumb as nails but they have lots of strength so you would not have to worry as much about buying items with strentgh mofifiers. Now on the solo side for caster style Necros are relly good But Shaman can be just about as good. Druids are good especially in the mid levels and gear is plentiful. I think that the shaman is a good choice too in the event you do want to group becasue everyone loves your friendly neighborhood shammy!

Like was mentioned go with the beastlord. Since you want to melee, cast, and solo beastlords are probably your best bet.

While Iksars do have the regen they also have an xp penalty. But don't let that stop you if you want to play one.

Beastlord is a great choice no doubt but I would like to point out what I like about shaman.

Spells: Shaman get haste, slows, buffs, debuffs, weapon proc buffs, heals, hots, dots, nukes, aoe rain, spells to speed up running, root, hp to mana conversion, gate to bind, etc.

Pet: Shamans get a dog pet which we usually refer to as dog dog. It's not as strong a pet as the beastlord but it can do a lot of damage, especially with Leopard (weapon proc buff).

Soloing: Shaman usually solo by debuffing the mob, then slowing it's attack rate, then tanks it in the face while dog dog nips at it's ankles. He applies dots for damage. He can also root rot if needed. The shaman is not fragile and can solo summoning mobs. Many of the first dragons ever soloed were done by shaman. The shaman is the most versitile soloer in that he can solo in very tight areas and will be able to solo in more places then other classes.

Mana Management: The shaman is able to turn his hp's into mana and then heal himself there by cutting down or completly eliminating downtime.

Grouping: Shaman are very desired in groups for their slows and buffs. Probably in the top 3 or 4 most desired class.

Armor: Shaman wear chain armor.

Those are the basics.

Bst or Shm I'd say. I have a Shm and they can solo well and are always welcome in groups. Not as efficient a soloer as some, but they can take reds well up to the end game. They do rely on DOT's to a great extent however. A Troll, so he regens also.

Although they don't cast, a Monk can solo again since they fixed the class - and they're a nice exploring class. Much more survivable than a War or Rog, and you get to smack stuff around. My Monk is pretty much "back to normal" since the fix, but mid level soloing (57) is rather slow. Ranger might be a thought. Tracking is nice, and they get a few spells to dink with. Never took one past 43 though.

Wow, thanks for all the replies.

I hadn't really thought about Shaman, but they sound similar to how I played my RDM. What do they use for weapons?

Beastmaster also sounds very nice. I may end up trying them both.

I played around in WoW a bit, but saying you soloed your way up there just doesn't have the same feeling of accomplishment. Hmmm... maybe someone could try grouping your way up to 60 in WoW. That might be hard.

Are there any other things to watch out for starting out: things that may seem like a Good Idea(tm) but would end up hurting my char in the long run?

BST would be the best choice, of course. Shamen have a certain weapon limitation: blunt weapons or certain spear-like piercing weaps. BST have better weaponry and combat stats and abilities for actual melee.

Elves cannot be beasties or shamen. Iksars, trolls, ogres, Vah Shir (cats) Barbarians and froggies (shaman only) are your available choices.

Shaman use blunt and piercing weapons. Most of the damage a shaman does comes from spell damage while beastlord damage is mostly melee and pet proc damage.

The one downfall of the beastlord is the lack of crowd control until the upper levels when they can get the pet snare proc aa. The shaman uses root for crowd control. Shamans also get a disease based root aa with a knockback effect that lasts 2 mins. It holds better then a normal root and the knockback effect can be used to "push" the mob in whatever direction your facing. Several shaman on a raid can push the mob into a corner.

Try both classes, either one you can't loose.

Cool i've never seen shaman coner on a raid(usually it was up to us wizards with shock of lightning amazing push no agro =)

I started an Iksar beastlord. Taking a while to get used to the UI. Very different, I can see the MUD roots in it. Kind of brings me back...

Another question: I seem to be in some sort of auto-sit. Whenever I'm running I start stooping down and need to sit then stand again to attack anything. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change?

Sounds like you're accidentally hitting your duck key. When this happens your movement slows down and you get messages like "You must be standing to attack!".

I don't remember what the default key for duck is, but like most keys in the game, it can be remapped from the Options menu in game.

Ducking generally serves little purpose: it you encounter a low ceiling you automatically duck under it, no key required. It does serve a purpose for casters though, you can interrupt your own seplls quickly and easily by ducking. This can come in handy if you cast the wrong spell or have the wrong thing targeted when you cast.

What server did you decide on, and what's your Beasties name?

I am Kurtulmak, the rat sticker, on Drinal(Tarew Marr).

It's a preferred server, whatever that means. I do notice that the tutorial area is brimming with people. Not too many other scaly types though, so I may get some room to breath once I go to my home city.

Edit: You were right about the duck. I remapped movement to WASD and left duck stuck on S. *doh*

just as an FYI: there are quite a few people starting toons on Povar at the moment, joining a guild called Aude Sapere - which consists mainly of people from this forum here.

if you fancy rerolling over there, do so now. it's only 3 hours of playtime I guess.

I know that you already made your choice, but as a mid-level shaman, I have to add my Smiley: twocents.

After playing a paladin to 55 (another choice if you want a melee character with a versitile spell selection), I've found soloing with a shaman much easier. Even if I don't go through the entire debuff-slow-DoT-root-pet cycle, I still find that I can solo mobs that were entirely out of my paladin's abilities. Once you get into the 40's, you get some stronger pets, stronger slows and debuffs, and some very nice heals (Stoicism 4TW!).

However, since you're just starting out, you're probably more interested in level 1-20. In that case, the beastlord is the perfect choice, and it is still a great soloer at the higher levels.
