What after EQFollow

I went to Walmart today and as i looked through the PC game section, I noticed there wasn't and Everquest game anywhere in sight, not even the newest expansion. Next my shopping took me to my local game store, and once again, no EQ. Now, I wasn't going to buy Everquest since I already have it, but I was just shocked that it wasn't there. Has SOE stopped distributing the game and if they have does that mean Everquest will soon be dieing out? I have been playing for just over a year and am worried, I really enjoy playing EQ and honestly dont know what I will do if I dont have that to fall back on in my free time. Hopefully I wont have to resort to just sitting around watching tv again like I used to do before EQ, but how can another game compete with something that immerses you so deeply into the game world. I have tried WOW and have decided that is just not the challenge EQ is. I have also heard many bad reviews on EQ2. So what is left, I dont want to abandon the online RPG genre but nothing else out there seems up to par. What do you all think.

errr, I think you have bigger issues to address than whether or not EQ will be around much longer.

That said, you don't have anything to worry about for quite some time. EQ will be around for at least a couple more years.

I think EQ will be around for a few more years so I'm not too concerned. Many leave and slowly come back. Even if the recruitment of true noobs is on the decline, they will still have a few tricks up their sleeves to keep us paying.

We'll probably see a more expansions in the future. Maybe some more server merges. More than likely at some point they'll raise the level cap to 75 or 80. Epic 3.0 and new armor quests... New graphics.... Hmmm.... that's all I can think of for now but you'll see. It's not over yet. Of course you'll probably hear the nay'sayers spewing forth tons of negative things but in the end SOE will win and we'll still be paying.

When I left (around Velious) there were tons of things wrong with EQ. SOE or Verant, can't remember, said there were no plans to raise level caps, that the clases were working as intended, yada, yada, yada... The nay'sayers proclaimed the end of EQ.... I came back 3 years later and everything has changed and for the better I may add.

Anywho, like you, I've tried several MMORPG's and none have been able to keep me as entertained as EQ. I'll more htan likely still be plying until the end.

While I don't find it as fun as EQ, Anarchy Online, is a very fun change of pace, and totally free. You download and play for free. And you get a lot of fun stuff, like machine guns and robots, and clothes like t-shirts or bikinis, etc. Can solo very well in that game.

AO isn't free. The first 30 days are, though.

I seriously doubt EQ1 is ever going to shut down. It might shrink down to a few servers, but the revenue will still be enough to keep it going in some shape or form. I wouldn't worry about it.

AO is free to download the original game (no expansions) and free for a year.

EQ is far from dead. It's getting harder and harder to find in the stores because IMHOmore demand is made for the digital download version. Stores just aren't stocking as many copies. Plus with sites like EBGames and Amazon, I think you'll find less and less quantities in retail locations.

Plus, only tools buy software from Wal-Mart...duh =P

The PC games section at my local Gamestop store is one small wall section down from 4 times that size a year ago. THe clerk said he thinks they are phasing out carrying pc games and sticking to consoles cause they do not sell that many PC titles.

Sad thing is, as far as story lines, PC games are far better. I understand that console has better graphics for the most part, but RPG style games suck on console.

Don't worrty about EQ1, SoE has announced "Escape to Norrath" a marketing plan that will bring quite a few people to EQ. Basically you get the game for free and get to play on a server that allows you to level to 15, you then can pay and transfer to real servers. Personally I don't think level 15 is high enough because 15-50 sucks for finding groups anymore, but that is okay...

What sort of jackassery is this??

Sure, PC has console system beat hands down with MMORPG's...but there are many other types of RPG games out there...for the most part they are all found on console systems. Some great titles out there as well. I've put lots of hours into console RPG's, prolly more than EQ if I total them all up.

I agree, that they are better in general. However for in store retailers Console games sell better and for online retailers PC games sell better. People who play PC games are almost always connected to the interenet and can order cheaper online and with greater ease of finding the PC game title then in a store. I do not think that the reduction of PC games in retail stores means a reduction of sales in PC games, its just that with most Consoles not connected to the internet, the console gamer is a better and faster turnover market for these retailers.

Thats very strange, I live a 5 minute walk from a Fred Meyer and they had EQ Platinum and DoN in the electronics department. I've seen it in stock since I moved to Washington in January. So I went there the other day to buy EQ in preperation for finally getting my computer back from Illinois, so I could play EQ....

And they had NO copies of the game, its been a week and they still have no copies, although they have 2 game cards. I know it isn't exactly a EB or anything but still, freaking me out after reading this post.

I saw bestbuy carrying eq1 untill recently but now they dont, I think a lot of stores are starting to phase it out, thinking people just want eq2. Its logical from their perspective, when the SIMS2 comes out noone is going to buy the SIMS1.

My local Best Buy still carries a few copies of EQ Platinum..not near the number at release date, but I don't think EQ is being phased out by any means.

Well its true, I went to the mall yesterday and checked out EB games, Gamestop, and Target. None of them had EQ platinum.

So I asked the guy at EB what the deal was, and he checked the computer and then said "Its discontinued. We didn't stop stocking it, they just don't make it anymore."

...What the heck does that mean? No more EQ for anyone who doesn't already have it?

I think they have redone the platinum into a new one, i cant remember what its called but it has oow in it now i think, and there is a starter pack that is like $7 with just a couple of expansions. I went to a big electronics store 'frys' and they still carried eq and several expansion packs. the gamestop by me still sells 'luclin' for like $15!

This not entirely true. They no longer make real RPG games on console. Back in the day when final fantasy, lunar, dragon warrior, and seiken densetsu were the kings of rpgs they were very good. Many of them still draw me away from
EQ for a time today.

But nowadays they simply don't make them for console games. And if they do it's a bad final fantasy game. Since final fantasy 9 they have not made a good one imo.

An Everquest expansion will be released every 6 months. They are experimenting with alot of ideas, some good, some not so but it adds to the game nonbetheless. As others mentioned, digital distribution is the future of PC gaming. Mythic is finally doing it for Dark Age of Camelot. By the way, if you are interested in Player vs Player combat, try that game to see if you enjoy it. If you do not care about graphics, try Ultima Online for depth.

I spend a couple thousand dollars a year on games and computer stuff and I have never been to Wal Mart or any other "store". These days, you don't even need a credit card to buy online, just a bank account if I am not mistaken.
