Im talking about not online, just like single player. Is there anything as fun as eq for a single player? I'd like to play something that would be like multiboxing in eq and controlling several toons.

Yeah. Was thinking the same. The Balur's Gate series is probably the best for that sort of gameplay. You get to play a whole party of adventurers, so that fits with what you were asking for.

There's also the ability to play multiplayer online, which can be kinda fun. It's a bit trickier to set up then a game like EQ due to the odd client/client method they use, but it dosn't cost anything...

NeverWinterNight is another series of D&D based games that's kinda close to what you're asking for. No real multi-character play though. In the game, you play just one character, but you can have an NPC sidekick as well (but you don't really control it, which can be a pain). However, NWN does have much better online play, with a pretty large number of online mods out there to pick from. You can kind of think of it as EQ-lite.

The Baldur's Gate series and Diablo 2 are my all-time favorite RPGs. The diversity of gameplay for Baldur's is awesome and the sheer scope (though now limited) of Diablo 2 was just awesome. I still play them to this day, but, I need another copy of D2... I sort of... erm..... broktedit from overuse. Heh

Morrowind is pretty good. Make sure you get it for computer though. Why? For the plugins. Limitless customizability (word?). I have this plugin I am thouroughly addicted to that allows a vampire character to embrace (turn NPCs into vampires that fight alongside you). At level 2 I had invaded two bandit lairs, freed 7 slaves and vamped them, while simultaneously enslaving the bandits. So, I now have an army of 14 that follows me everywhere. Pretty cool!

Oh, and by the way, be sure to get the Game of the Year edition so you don't have to hunt down the expansion paks. And be sure to visit the Elder Scrolls homepage right away to patch the games otherwise it is sort of buggy.

Also Morrowind allows for different kind of leveling if you're sick of the EQ grind. You can level by increasing your proficiency through specific weapons, by thievery and stealth, or by bribing/brown-nosing an NPC. Theoretically it is possible to level to level 20 (heck, as high as you want) before even setting foot outside of Seyda Neen, the first town (I wouldn't though. Like EQ, this game is very gear-oriented).

The character I always play is a heavily armored spellcaster who can bribe his way out of anything and can cheat any merchant out of all their cash. Low HP but high strength so that he can still fight.

Multi-boxing, huh...well, in the original game that is impossible but with the right mod it is very possible. As I mentioned I have 14 characters following me around at all times. However, to control them I have to issue specific commands, like 'Vampire Follow Close', or, 'Vampire Slaughter Everybody'. So its not really hands on control like multi-boxing, its sort of like having a lot of pets. Pets with really sharp teeth Smiley: sly.

Anyways, just my two cents.

Anyone tried Lords of Everquest? And what about LotR - The Battle for Middle-earth? (Part 2 announced!)

Personally, I loved the old DSA-Series (Das Schwarze Auge = The Dark Eye), there have been 3 games (1. Schicksalsklinge, 2. Sternenschweif, 3. Schatten über Riva) and you were able to import the characters (a whole party, 6 characters) from 1 to 2 to 3. If anyone is interested, German link here.

Well I didn't like the 3rd person aspect of most of those mentioned.

The ones I loved the absolute most are old now, but I still dust them off occasionally and they are still the best of the lot IMO, are the Might and Magics. There were 9 or 10 of them. 1-5 are NOT good now. Six through 10 are still awesome.

For a modern take Syberia 1 and 2 are good, but still not as good as Might and Magic. Those led me to EQ as being the closest first person play match.

I enjoyed almost all of the console Final Fantasy series, they were really my intro to RPGs. You could give FFIX a try.

Icewindale series was pretty damn good as well.
#14 Jul 29 2005 at 9:32 AM Rating: Decent
/agrees with jrmayii

Icewind Dale was exceellent from both the graphics and game play standpoints.

Another fun oldie was a game called The Summoning. I don't even remember who put it out but was a group based dungeon crawl (you recruited and controlled the group just like in Icewind Dale). The graphics wise it was great for its time but lame by today's standards. Still fun though, at least for nostalgia purposes =)

Morrowind was so good that it got me looking for similar games which is how I discovered EQ. Best non online game ever!

Buy the game of the year addition then hit the forums for plugin ideas there are some completely insane ones out there.

thanks for all the suggestions! Its going to take me a log time to look at all of these. Morrowind seems like the most popular suggestion.

EQ is the king of rpgs for me but sometimes you only have a few minutes or you want to play something with a 'pause' button!

Legend of Zelda is my favorite game ever.

I can't explain how obsessed I was with that game. My personal best: I got all the way to Gannon without ever getting a sword. It changes the whole game. (BTW If any one out there has ever beaten Gannon without a sword, I'd like to hear from them.)

Other than that, Morrowind has to be the most incredible single player game I've ever seen. The main story line of the game isn't even a tenth of what's out there, not even counting the expansions. In fact, I've never even followed the story line, or beaten the game, and I have a 75th level character with every Attribute, including Luck, maxxed out, and Max Rank in like 7 factions.

(Far, if you read this, what the hell were you thinking, introducing a person like me to EverQuest? What's wrong with you? You had to have known my weakness. You must have known it would destroy me.)

I'd go with Might & Magic 6-9 and Morrowind.

I just started Morrowind, actually, and I have to say it's a lot of fun being a rank newbie again. Do patch it right away, though; crashing in mid combat is not so fun.

Another RPG that no one has mentioned and most of you haven't played is planescapes torment. I'd go into the whole breakdown and scenario of the game but i dont wanna. It is by far the best (other than eq) game i have ever played. Check out the reviews on it at amazon.com . I bought it in a duel box set with some stupid *** game called soulbringer. But that's ok cuz torment was well worth it. But you can still order it online for cheap.
