Ykesha was immune to nearly all forms of player-based magic and melee. It wasn't my intention that he be slain during the battle. He was combatable so that a slow stream of Frogloks would spawn nearby, attack him and quickly be splattered. However, there is a long standing tradition of creative players killing NPCs that were never intended to die (the Sleeper for example!) and Warlord Ykesha helped carry on that tradition. After hours of beatings by Frogloks and the boss NPCs it was possible to take him out.
The shield he carried was for looks alone. It has no stats and no purpose. We often create dummy items for NPCs to change their looks, like picks for miners, the Lifeguide that Firiona carried, 'burned out' epics for guildmasters and quest NPCs, and various weapons for base population.
