I usually like to play tanks, but I do play a cleric and at level 45 she caught an MGB KEI in PoK last night.
This was my first ever taste of KEI in EQ.
I found myself low on mana only one time in The Hole with a small group of four 40's toons.
In my cleric's next group I probably won't have KEI. Will I wonder how I ever lived without it? Will I be hooked already?

Big buffs can be addictive.
However if you learned how to survive without it, then you know you can do without it. It's becomes a nice to have.

Nope, KEI sticks at 45.
"Going for KEI" is one of the most god-awful annoying things I've ever seen in EQ. Especially when it's one of the key classes (say, the only healer)...or half the group. Granted, my "main" is a Necromander and KEI is a debuff compared to my Lich, but even as a Cleric I would rather keep the group active at a slower pace, then make everyone wait for 15-20 minutes while gating to PoK, getting KEI, then running back to zone and rejoining the group.

My wiz wouldn't be ready to go do battle without KEI anymore than she would ready to go out without clothes. It's amazing how much more damage I can do when I have mana.

If I had my druthers I would get the Druid PoC + Cleric Symbol & AC buff, but that combo is not as easy to track down for most.

I was surprised to learn that PoT9 will stick at 45, but BoT9 wont stick untill 46. Found out when buffing group and an old friend brought his 45 to play with us. I cast Bot9 and got message that the spell was too powerful for him. Then got out PoT9, at his request, and it stuck. That ws a surprise, I had allways assumed that group buffs had the same level requirements as the single form a of that buff - they were just more mana efficient.

Aegolism is level 45 like KEI.
And I, too, often look for Pot9/Symbol combo whenever I can. My pet, though, always gets V.

The trick is learning to live without if you can. I never ask for buffs outside of my own group(with the exception of rez but that's not really a buff). If I'm in PoK and MGB's are being done I'll stop by. However I'll never sit around shouting in /ooc for hours. If I can't find a buff in a few minutes I have to make do without. It's harder but sometimes it's funner. Besides maybe you'll run across a dispelling mob in the first couple of minutes in the zone (that's always fun).

I do carry some mana regen potions now for the times that I'm not able to get KEI.
I never leave a group for KEI and will only check in PoK if I'm not in a group, or on the way running to meet a group. If I don't get an answer in 20 seconds or so, I head to the group without buffs, and just use my mana regen potion when I get there.

Yeah it can slow everything down soloing but boy it makes me appreciate the nice folks who happen upon you and buff the snot out of you. I feel guilty since I am an SK that I don't really have a way to return the favor.

People who become completely reliant on buffs are an accident waiting to happen, IMHO.
Paladin can't find a V or a Conv? Self Buff.
Druid can't find a KEI? Don't cast as many dots as you normally do.
It's called mana management. It comes with experience. You should know how long it takes you to regen. You should know where your limits are.
The problem with all these killer buffs, and the NEED to have them is that it gives you a false sense of where your limits lie.

"The whole time! I was just killing mobs until it faded, ran back to PoK, got a fresh one, and kept going!"

I'm not going to lie - I'm very fond of KEI, and Virtue. But if it comes down to slowing down my group because I **NEED** to have them, then I just become a pain in the rear.
