Graphics cards....Follow

#1 Jul 24 2005 at 1:09 AM Rating: Decent
Hello all.

As my recent post says...I am updating my old computer system and would like some information on a nice graphics card to play EQ on.

I've been looking around, but the nicest I can find is this:

http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/graphicscards/productView.htm?quicklinx=3PCF

I dont want to spend over £70, or $120 and I would like it 256MB.

Anyone any ideas?

Need a little more info. Is it going to be an AGP card or PCIExpress?

For AGP, you can go with something like a GForce 6200. If it's going to be a PCIExpress, maybe a Radeon X700 or a GForce 6600. Keep in mind that none of these cards are "top of the line", but they'll more then do for EQ. Just don't expect to be playing something like Battlefield 2 at max resolution and all settings on high.

EDIT: Yeah, what Verhex said. Smiley: wink

If you are upgrading the whole PC you should definitely go to PCI Express, this is many times faster than AGP.

The difference in price between a "good" PCI Express card nVidia 6600GT SLI and the "best" nVidia 6800GT Ultra is enormous and as others have said, is probably not justified for EQ (although the graphics in the new zones is getting to be pretty good stuff).

There is something wierd going on with the 256mb ram in the 6600GT series, some people say that it is actually slower than the 128 mb card, they are also very hard to find and a lot more expensive.

Main ram is much much more important than graphics ram for EQ (although personally I like to have as much of both as possible), if the total $ budget is limited, make sure you get 2Gb main ram first and then as much graphics ram as you can afford. Personally I have an Asus 6600GT SLI PCI Express with 128 mb ram running on a PC with 2Gb main ram sitting next to an Asus 6800 Ultra AGP with 256 mb ram on a PC with 2Gb main ram and it is not possible to detect any difference in performance in game.

yeah, stay with 128MB video ram unless you know the manufacture use quality DDR3 memory chips. some manufactures use lower quality memory chips for 256MB version to save money.

As for the cards on the market now, PCI-e does Not provide any real advantage over AGP. But I agree that if you are getting a full new system, get a mother board with PCI-e slot.

I disagree with having a system with over 1GB RAM. In most cases, system with over 1GB RAM starts to run a little slower than <= 1GB.

As for SLI, it's just too expensive. Unless you are running 1600x1200 or higher at highest visual settings, I don't see the need to go SLI.

EQ is the newest game so u dont need top of the line graphics cards, cause they dont do much, u might a ATI radeon 128 mb or Nividi Ge force 128 mb
