I've only played one Dwarf, and decided it was not for me. That still doesn't stop me from going to Kaladim. Kaladim's stucture is excellent, easy to follow and has Identifiable faction setups.

As a little drood, I played with my dwarf pally friend. I could never figure out how he could afford to be a smith. All the mobs in the Qeynos Hills were poor as hell, so I was guessing that the same was true for all Newbie zones. NOT TRUE, with Skunks and Krag chics giving up a plat for the claws and Goblins & Greenbloods giving up 4 Plat for heads, blood and tokens. Lil Dorfs were putting other zones to shame.

Since then I've taken all my noobs to Butcherblock, and when on friendly factions, I'd go inside : )

I choose Riverdale with Halas a close second. What makes these cities better than others is the layout and ease of getting around, and not having to zone to second part of city to go bank etc like in Qeynos, Kaladim, Freport etc. Halas does have a better newbie area, but the little swim area at start of city is not easy for smaller races to get out of once you get to the other side.

As for kethelin that is last on my list until they build some goddamn working railings. I mean who builds a city in the trees and skimps on the cost of railings? And having to wait for a lift to get in and out, that is so annoying.

I have a thing for the elves, so I like Kelethin a lot.

I like Freeport as well, but being a Paladin who wields Soulfire, I can't get there anymore without causing..ahem..a disruption. Kinda funny to watch though - Lucan's men need to think of something better to call me than "A DOG!"

Halas for me. Partly it is an emotional attachement since it was where I started playing and no game since has even mildly recaptured the fun of the first hours playing.

The more objective things going in it's favor:

Easy city to navigate. Safe place to swim and fish. Great newbie zone: plenty of MOBs, vendors in the zone, MOBs drop vendor junk and tradeskill items. Only LDoN zone where the LDoN camp and dungeon enterances are in the same zone.

Definately, Neriak. It's funny to watch PvP'ers coming after me, zone in through the gates with my nasty SoW from my guild pals, then watch bands get slaughtered since they have autofollow on me. Haha.

Kelethin. Here's my story. July 2000. I made a Halfelf Druid on the Cazic-Thule server named Anladar. Started him in Surefall. I was killed by "A Skeleton". each time i popped, there was the skeleton, and it killed me... multiple times. I had to restart my computer because I was just being corpse camped by this "Skeleton" (more like Demon if you ask me). I made a Woodelf Druid (same name) and played him til level 47 (quit game, came back later) I did make a Mage (Level 56. name's Norfare. look me up) but through that I remade the druid, and Kelethin has always been my home. Kelethin FTW. RL friend's home is Kelethin as well. We love you Kelethin/Greater Faydark!

Norfare Fae`Oallon- 56 Mage, <Altruistic Brotherhood>
Anladar Ve`eurlen- 21 Druid, <Altruistic Brotherhood>
Erellont Alcarin- 37 Bard
Kithuriel X`Lonir- 20 Necromancer

Halas has the absolute best newbie grounds, but with the new tutorials who needs a newbie ground anymore?

I will always love Neriak. My original character that I learned EQ with was a human warrioress from Freeport, and that city will always have a special spot in my gaming heart due to my fond newbie memories of all her armor quests and the Great Newbie Rat Whisker Hunt!

However, when I moved to the Firiona Vie (Roleplaying) server and changed to pure ebil- ie, a dark elf necromancer- and joined a dark elf roleplaying guild, it was over. I am hooked!

Neriak is complex, but it fits the people perfectly. It has definate atmosphere over many of the other cities. The secret tunnels, the eerie underground decor....and let's face it...what other city has the Maiden's Fancy?! You have no idea how many male in-game buddies I have brought to Third Gate because they didn't believe me about Mare X`Lottl and Spice...

After playing in every newbie zone in the game, and starting from every city, I can tell you flat out no newbie area comes close to Halas/Everfrost. This area has more quests, more ways to gain exp, more mobs close to level up on than any other area in the game, hands down. Only Cabilis/FoB or Rivervale/Misty come even close...but Halas IMO offers more overall in game feel, interaction with groups and learning game mechanics.

i chose neriak because its looked really awesome when my first caharcter, a DE wizard. i kinda liked running around like a rat until i learned the whole place. sence then all my toons have been dark elfs. plus its all nice and shiny in there lol

Currently Kelethin, That said, I have a new beastlord who has a starting city of Halas. In the past I have hated Halas but now that I have played the game a while I am getting used to it. I too have fallen out of the tree city and died may times lol. but well it happens. I hated the dark elf city; never did find my way out of it and Van Shir is a mystery. I have a new Van Shir shaman who hasnt been there yet as she is still in the Tut.

So...Kelethin first with Halas or Felwithe 2nd...

Someday I will pick a :main: toon then Maybe I will decide LOL.

Rivervale has my vote. If nothing else, because of the music played there. Pleasant and invigorating. It would be perfect if they would just keep Mangler tied up.

Qeynos.

Reason? Two words: HIDDEN BASE.

Man rivervale is by far the best city. It is very easy to navagate as a nooby, and i guess because i grew up making tirdlings i kind have a soft spot for it...also rivervale music is the bomb. Who cant like the 3 foot tall guys with zoro masks on? i mean come on

Cabilis is my favorite city... there's something about the Kunark zones. It's as if they were developed by gamers. They have a good "feel" to me.

Even though my first character started in Kelethin and I have wonderful memories of it and love the zone with a passion and have many wood elves, I voted for Neriak.

Where else can you find such a dark, evil city with such rich history, beautiful stone work and neon lights and those cool 3D lit skulls in the middle of the air? Tons of newb quests too. Sure I was lost when I made my first dark elf, but I ran around learning the place and trying to find my way out of town and dinged level 3 killing rats and turning in their whiskers while lost in town. :-D (this was before even the first mines of gloomingdeep). Really wanting the trolls to move the heck out though, and hoping they'll take those few ogres with 'em. :-)

But I do love Kelethin as well and it's pretty much tied for first place for a hometown. Sure, my first character in her first 10 minutes of life fell off the platform right out of the guild house. That made it extra challenging, but fun. I ran around there lost for a long time as well, but that's how you really learn a place. Didn't have the find function when I started. I find that's just a crutch to keep people from learning their hometown anyway. I also love working my alcohol tolerance there. Wonderful sweet wine and fun challenges to see if I can get across town while plastered without falling. LOL. And the only town where you can truely have a good game of Gnome Darts!

i was fond of GROBB myself , but the ***** heads took it out of the game to add those toadloks.. hope the trolls take grobb back and destroy all signs of gukta.....or...we could just destroy all life on norrath, that might even be a little better.

Almost quit when they took grobb away, instead i made a female troll sk on Tallon Zek by the name of Childeater. before the
expansions release, lvl'd her to 15 to get my 2nd spell set and then camped little toadloks on the release date of loy.. was the only thing i could do to quench the rage gukta brought to me.

having played the game since kunark and having both my main on saryrn (my first server) and then my main on tallon zek be trolls and to just have there home city ripped away from them like that, i...i... it was...a kind of mental rape, i despise who ever made that decision and will still gladly gut a toadlok in cold blood to lament the loss of my true eq home..i have never been back and wont till trolls rule again..i dont want to see the blasphemy that is gukta, the home of the toad.

Qeynos, no doubt.

Nice small newbie yard with abundant mobs that drop stackable loot that sells for decent money. Frequent named pops (Fippy), good faction for the city (killing Gnolls), and a well stocked yard full of spell components (Bone Chips, Bat Wings, and Snake Skins). Quick access to the most excellent Black Burrow (better loot and faction), Eurds Crossing (Greater LightStone Farming for pp), and the expansive Plains of Karana that will behold many a great adventure. With the Peaks of Everfrost and the Fortress of Permafrost just a short run (not Book) away one could make the argument that you would never have to leave western Antonica from lvls 1 - 70.

But that is just me.

Oggok!

First time wandering around and seeing all those fat fellows scratching their butts was incredible. Then when I learned to take screenies I tried to wait on whole SK guild to scratch at same time and get a group picture of em...

I think by far ogres might have easiest newbie armors nowadays, since usually other people sell all those items required to shops, so you can just get few plats fast and get a full set by maybe running once or twice outside city to find few spiderling silks.

Also ogres have much easier killing at newbie area since the lizardmen are no longer kos, (althought decaying skeletons do assist them, dunno why), only threat for lowbies is the occasional marsh bear cup. Sad part is how our neighbours trolls were thrown out by the infidels calling themselves Guktans, and by all means I hope the outcome of this war means that we're gonna have our troll brothers back in their swamp!

Ak'Anon is my favourite. The zoo's two exhibits were disappointing when I first went to see it after I'd heard about it as a tiny n00b HIE WIZ, although once I learnt my way around as my next char, a GNM NEC, I came to love it and its ticking merchants.

Rivervale, my first character was a halfling rogue so I will always love the town
