* Edit: After 82 votes, Freeport became an option. The lack of a Freeport option is what happens when trying to put together a poll late at night. The pathetic part? Freeport is the pick of the poll-maker. Cheers to Freeport.

The starting city I like most is...
Ak'Anon:37 (2.7%)
Cabilis:89 (6.5%)
Erudin:24 (1.8%)
Felwithe:92 (6.7%)
Gukta:22 (1.6%)
Halas:111 (8.1%)
Kelethin:224 (16.4%)
Kaladim:64 (4.7%)
Neriak:130 (9.5%)
Oggok:15 (1.1%)
Paineel:24 (1.8%)
Qeynos:159 (11.6%)
Rivervale:121 (8.8%)
Shar Vahl:79 (5.8%)
Surefall Glade:56 (4.1%)
Freeport:122 (8.9%)
Total:1369

I may have grown up in Kelethin but I dislike the city. When I was a lowbie, I fell out of city and went splat on the ground. That same day a very kind druid ported me to Surefall and binded me there and Surefall became my second home. The Half elf and Humans accepted me as one of their own. :)

As a Dark Elf ,Neriak because of its complexity. As far as the simpilist city to start of in I would say Felwithe ,because of its simple layout for newer people

My favorite is Cabilis. Now if they'd just do something interesting with all those tunnels they've got...

That is so bad. And it was my pick... I really have nothing in the way of explanation besides the rushed and tired state I was in last night.

Added after 82 votes. My apologies to the other Freeporters we have with us.

I love Felwithe even though all my characters are hardcore dark elves (I even belonged to a dark elf roleplaying guild before they broke up =(... I miss it)

Halas/Everfrost has everything, a super swim pool, lots of spiderlings, and skellies, tons on newb quests, everything is easy to get to. I brought most of my toons up there, though my DE could not actually go to Halas, still killed the spiderlings and bears and skellies, and by that time there was a PoK book.

Every toon could almost twink themselves afterwards (well almost because I could never quite stop there), I think it may be the richest newb area, with the most spiderlings.

Also in the young teens Everfrost is great. Wide open spaces, lots of orcs and animals and spiders.

Thanks Kelti for typing out everything I was going to say and saving me the trouble. ;)

Halas is by far the best, imo... for all the reasons mentioned and a few not (proximity to BB and Perma and having a Wayfarer Magus, for example).

Back in the days when most players stuck around their home towns to grind out 1-12 or so in the newbie areas, Halas/EF really couldn't be beaten. Even now, with the tut and easy travel, it's still a fun, dynamic starting zone with lots of opportunities for good plat.

I have an affinity for Qeynos. Wether I start there or not, all my toons eventually make their home there.

There is just something about a tree house that makes this game ok for a almost 50 yr man. evevn though Felwithe is always home. I still like my tree house it is central to Crush bone and BB no better place to raise a kid

I started on Vazaelle as a human monk named Cammamc - got in a building - went up some stairs and it was so dark i never got out!

I started an iksar - found my guildmasters and learned of some quests, stumbled across to the the next building whcih was a local pub and the bartendar gave me a bag to full up with wolf pelts.

Soon i was out catching these mangy wolf cubs and getting armor made for me, selling my stacks of bone chips to these outlanders.

Won't mention the incident with not being able to kill anything after level 5 due to the shield i placed in my offhand, or the NPC in Cabillis I KILL every time I'm there (Thank you origin) when i saved every freaking copper i could muster for two shiny Fine Steel Maces for 63pp each went out to the FoB hunting grounds, realized my fists did better damage, and the mmerchant showed me the Return Policy. He'd buy them back for only 5pp each. Fooking cheapskate

Its all about Kelethin. Sure it's complex and i died at least a dozen times through careless running, but what other city is there where you don't have to zone everytime you came back from a newbie hunt to sell and buy stuff. Kelethin 4tw!
#19 Jul 23 2005 at 2:49 PM Rating: Good
why do so many of you like kelethin, I never could find my way through it befor ethe find comand came outI still today cant figure out how to get through that city without it.
#20 Jul 23 2005 at 4:01 PM Rating: Decent
Kelethin, Why cause it's the most complex city to navigate and the first day i started playing eq they had naked drunken bridge running contests, see who could get across the bridge without falling hehe.

Shar Vahl is my favorite, and let me tell you why. One, tis the home city of the Vah Shir, and in my heart I will always be a cat. When Luclin came out I brought my druid up to the moon and promptly died in wolf form. Oops! Tried again and explored, it was so beautiful, especially the courtyard. I made a Vah Shir, did my citizenship quest (tracking down the necessary npc's with my alt and then sharing loc's with anyone who asked), then proceeded to level in the pit under the city, then went out to shadeweaver's. I was continuing my newbie quests as well as getting xp. Which meant I only went to Paludal to wait for certain drops and then I headed out to Hollowshade. The quests and beauty in Shar Vahl will always hold a special place in my heart. Long live the Vah Shir!

My first three characters started in Qeynos. There was just something about being a human and fighting for right, hence a human Paladin, and then a human wizard, followed by a human cleric. City is easy to navigate. Then I learned that wood elves could forage so three of my characters are wood elves from the city of Kelethin. A druid, ranger and rogue. It is a lot cheaper, when you have a toon that can forage, when your learning to bake and/or brew. The city is difficult to navigate without find, but it is a plus that you don't have to zone from the newbie zone. I have a froglok shaman, for alchemy. The froglok city is pretty easy to navigate. I have a gnome enchanter. Great little tinkerer, but their home city is difficult to navigate and I spend a lot of time lost there.

Kaladim. The quests and the mobs right outside the front door. Not to mention the HUGE Dwarf statue that you knew was Brell himself! The lush green of the BBM!

Had a pic of the Entry to Kaladim as my Wallpaper for over a year. Will always have a fond spot eventhough PoK has become my main's home now.

I have to say Neriak Commons. Any part of Neriak to me is real easy to navigate, however a lot of people have trouble. I've adapted to it tho, and it's easy for me, lol. I like how there's a secret passageway connecting the Forgien Quarter and the Commons...but I never did like the FQ, cause of all the OGrea and Trolls. No offence to them, but I never liked them, and never want to play as one.

As for Kelethin, only thing I really use that city is for the Banker and the Guildmaster, both used by find, so it's no sweat. Maybe a couple merchants here an there to sell my goods and the soulbinder too, but that's back when I was in CB all the time. If you have such a hard time...use the Find command and a map...or if you're high enough, jump off. That's what I do.

After considering Kelethin for a while, I finally chose Qeynos... can't tell you why, it just feels like home.
