I am a 28 yr old male and I have been playing EQ for 4 years and I think it rocks. I am definately NOT your normal player(not that its a bad thing). I date beautiful women, have a fat job and was a collegant athlete.
The problem with this industry and the rest of role playing games are the crazy's out there that ruin the image for the rest of us. I mean, dressing up is one thing, but doing it on a daily basis, etc....you have a problem and are discrediting the hobbie. When you hear something in the news about a coupke of teenage boys fashoning some long swords and cutting up their neighbors, this industry and the people who love to play it take a huge hit...the public immediately associates crazy's or disfunctionals with it, and thus shuns it.
So what do we do? Act normal, PLEASE! I like to dress up in costumes as much as the next guy/girl, I just do it on HALLOWEEN!!! Try coming out while the sun is up at least 3 days a week. Dress in something other than black (and take a shower), for the love of God, PLEASE!!! And don't fashoion weapons, pretending to be Gandalf, Elminster or <place your favorite fantasy/Sci-Fi character here> and cut up your neighbors. If everyone decides to do this and works on the image of fantasy/Sci-Fi hobbies, people will begin to accept it and will stop rolling their eyes when you talk about it.
Well, I have said enough.....
