Its an AA ability. Takes at least 23 to get, though most wont get it until even longer as it is not a very high priority ability to get. I dont see myself getting it for at least another 100 AAs.

SKs also get the ability.

Assuming you have a paladin character, you can browse the available AA abilities at any time. Either click on the "alt advance" button when at the inventory screen, or just hit the "v" key to go directly there.

The AA ability "Holy Steed" is a class specific AA. The requirements are that you be level 59, and have 12 points spent on "archtype" abilities. In order to start on the archtype abilties, you must have spent 6 points on "general" abilities. Thus, 6+12=18, added to the 5 for the Holy Steed ability means that the earliest you can get the ability is level 59 on your 23rd AA point.

I tend to agree with the above poster that you'll likely get other stuff first, but I think 100 AAs is waaaay too long to wait. I think I spent my first 6 on general, then spent 12 getting CA3, then 15 getting LR5, then got my steed (so like somewhere in my 30s). Being able to travel through a zone at *very* high speed is worth the 5 AA points and then some. The only travel speed that is faster is a high level bard with some of the best drums available in the game. Paladins don't get invis, or sow, or ports, or sneak/hide, so being able to outrun any mob in the game adds significantly to our travel ability.

It doesn't add to your ability to tank or anything, but it's "fun" and useful. I highly recommend it.

because sony is scared of bards, they actually cap bard speed so a really low drum caps it. at any decent level, even a TDoK will cap a bard 8(

I would get CS3 and ID5 before my mount in addition to LR5. Might even want to take the upgrades to the LR and ID lines that come with OOW first as well.

Yeah. Maybe. When I got it, GoD hadn't yet come out, so CA/LR were considered vastly more important then CS/ID. So that affected my decision. At the time, CA/LR were "must have" tanking abilities, with the other stuff kinda trailing behind.

I just think that it's 5 points. There aren't a whole lot of other abilities that will change your play as much as holy steed will for that few points. And at some point, the game is about fun, not just squeeking out as much efficiency in your character as possible. Those other abilities have a measurable effect on your ability to tank, but none of them give you a "new" ability. I'm reasonably sure that if I took 5AAs worth of tanking AAs away from any tank in the game, it wouldn't make or break his ability to tank anything. But those 5AAs spent on holy steed will dramatically increase the fun factor of the game, and perhaps survivability as well.

Again. That's just my personal opinion. I spent the points for it as soon as I could and have never regretted it.

And the Holy/Unholy Steed is an ability not a clicky so you can use it on CR. It can make quite a difference.

There was a time when Gather Shadows worked while on Unholy Steed or did they stop that?

If you have an instant cast effect (like a cloudy potion, or a pre-nerf circlet of shadows), you can cast it while moving. Spells and effects with a zero casting time can't be interrupted.

So yeah. It's a horse that isn't reliant on having an item, so you can use it for CR. Quite handy IMO.
