What are your top 5 zones to play in, and why? (Planes excluded)

1.)Unrest - As a paladin, the place just reeks of unholy walking dead asking to be destroyed. Some of the most massive, most memorable trains I have ever been a part of or seen have happened in this zone. Fighting against some of the named mobs in this zone actually gave me shivers, and that, "Oh man, this is gonna be bad" feeling.

2.)The Karanas - Huge zones, decent drops, nice landscape - a young ranger or druid's paradise for soloing, or to work up that swimming skill. The bridge built by the giants - that's just a real nice piece of EQ lore for all the fans out there, and cool to look at - a friend of mine witnessed an EQ marriage right there.

3.)Dreadlands - The mobs are **pretty much** the same as FV, but you get a decent change of terrain (snow, sand, hills, etc.) and it's usually not terribly crowded.

4.)Trakanon's Teeth - Mob variety, good xp, large zone, enough exits to use in case of a serious jam. Special memory - was the first zone I ever hunted in with my guild.

5.)Rathe Mountains - It's not even about the money anymore, as I am pretty well off, there is just a special smile that is brought to my face as I have anywhere from 4-7 giants rooted and rotting, waiting to give off that trademark death-groan.

1) Castle Mistmoore - Pre-Revamp - This zone rocked. I spent hours making my way through the castle until I just couldn't handle the amount of mobs that came at me.. Gate!

2) Sol B - I started off staying in the normal camps... Champion, B&B... Then after I lvled up, me and a friend ventured on in further. We got the giants and I thought I was in heaven. The xp was great, and loot unreal at the time!

3) Kedge Keep - This is a crazy idea for a zone. Having pathways that go up and down underwater. Its really dark and creepy, but the first time I made it back to phinny I felt like I had really accomplished something :)

4) Kaesora - I've spent days camping this whole zone. The undead is great for cleric/pallys. The xp is sweet for lvl40-45. Only thing I didn't like was trying to find my way out. If you didn't have a gate potion, you'll spend hours looking for it!

5) Kael - I have wonderful memories of this zone. I've been there with raid forces of 30+. And I've camped the exact same area a year later with me and 2 friends. Its still fun to go there and camp in the arena.

If you look here you'll see my favorites. I know, lazy, but...

EDIT: Here, I'll even paste it over:

Favorites:

Splitpaw Lair - (EDIT: This refers to the pre-revamp Splitpaw) It's a fun zone, and was pretty challenging back before it became trivial. People avoided it like the plague because CR's could be nasty (especially if your tank got charmed). Pretty good loot for the level (used to be at least). The difficulty of the dungeon scales well from entrance to the Ishva also.

BoT - While BoT is not the most challenging zone, and anyone of the appropriate level can go there, not just the "elitists", it can be exciting as a puller, especially if you are pulling in wind. It's crowded and your group has to stay close to you, so if you ***** up, there's not a lot of room to fix things.

The Hole (Ruins of Old Paineel) - Similar to splitpaw, except higher level. There's a decent variety of mob types with different weaknesses/strengths too, so you need to pay closer attention. Loot kinda sucks, unless you can get to the bottom, but then it turns into a raid if you're of appropriate level for the zone.

The ones I don't like:

Emerald jungle - I feel the exact same as Jophiel on this one. It blows. It's just a bit of wasted time on my way to TT.

Lake of Ill Omen - It's a waste of space in my opinion. I know some people liked it, but I hated it. I think a lot people hunted there only because of the experience after they gave it a big ZEM, but hated the zone, like the modern day PC.

Favorite farming zones:

Trakanon's Teeth - In design and visually, it's the same as EJ, so that sucks, but the hunting is much better. I discovered just how easy it can be to farm the forager cycle with my bard when he was only level 45 or so, and it was very nice. It's not that difficult to get an ikky mask or ikky BP per night (for a bard at least). The bad part about it is it's terrible experience... but then it wouldn't be farming, would it?

Jagged Pine Forest (poachers) - They drop pelts and skins galore and are easy as hell (again, for a bard). The named can drop some ok stuff, mostly no drop, but the Partisan of Stampede is pretty neat, and one day I WILL get that freakin half elf mask (camped it every day for 3-8 hours for 2 weeks...).

Erm? There's two zoneslines to outdoor locations (EJ and SoNH) and the globe to Sebilis. And I can't imagine a circumstance where zoning into Sebilis and having to fight through to the zone-out would be more favorable than just fighting whatever is in TT. That's like zoning into Plane of Fear to escape a lizard train in the Feerott Smiley: grin

Favorite Zones:
(1) Sebilis. Just the best constructed dungeon I've been in. Immense, challenging mob density, lots of named and the place has lots of ambiance. Plus there's still an aura of history to it for me, harkening back to when Kunark class armor was elite and Sebilis was near end-game.

(2) Crypt of Nadox. Easy to navigate since almost nothing sees invisible, lots of drops and random "corpse pop" spawns. Until I drifted away from EQ, this zone was like Candyland for my bard with its large rooms and flat floors. Originally I'd AE kite the place and, after the nerf, just do invisible runthroughs and chant down the named spawns. The Luggald Broodmother and I had a special relationship there for a while.

(3) Runnyeye. One of my first dungeons and one I spent a lot of time in. I was rather proud of myself for knowing the maze-like layout and having little trouble getting to the rooms I wanted. The revamp made it more enjoyable yet when I got my Iksar high faction here and could chat with Lord Pickclaw about the halflings.

(4) The Warrens/Stonebrunt Mts. All of my characters have spent time in the Warrens since the zone opened. The tightly packed mobs and echoing howls evokes the feelings of claustrophobia and being surrounded by endless hordes of the dog-men. Digging deeper in reveals the history of Brell's first race and the ruins of an ancient city and culture. Tagging along, I've always continued my fight to the neighboring mountain range and enjoyed spending my late 20's and early 30's camping the Raging Highland Kobolds up in the frosty ridges of Stonebrunt.

(5) Jaggedpine Forest. Serenity and danger, Jaggedpine made an immediate impression on me. Time spent hunting snakes and griffons, collecting the various special drops, getting my Burnoose of the Half-Breed (ha! hehe) and learning how to farm the Potamid Queen were all fun but the view of the zone as I run off the highest mountains with Levitate on and float over the moonlit forest and river is still breathtaking.

I've noticed you haven't been around much lately. Have you started another game or just drifted from online MMORPGs altogether?

Ah, yes. My first toon to hunt there was my Erudite necro. That place totally creeped me out. Kind of the same way Splitpaw did for my ranger (who was my first toon) except Splitpaw didn't have quite the ambiance.

My favorite zones are tied to classes somewhat. In no particular order:

Crystal Caverns. I ruled the place with my monk. Nice farmable stuff. Falling down in the pit was never a problem.

Dulaks Harbor. Boat jumping and good groups with the occasional named. Good seasoning for budding clerics. I've run at least 6 characters through there and never get tired of it.

Lesser Fay. Brownie/Horse hunting with my druid when she was able to finally off the blighters. Until LDoN not much traffic, and even after no one hunts there. Now with Mistmoore revamp, things are a bit different hehe.

East Karanas. Where farming got its name. Good for foraging too.
Killed a very red Proon solo with druid.

High Pass. Spent countless hours there with Iksar monk getting HP faction up to get faction up in Freeport. Then later learned how to KS the guards with my chanter. Ruined Qeynos faction with my rogue (Scout's Blade quest) only to repair it again killing bandits. Include the Hold for some enjoyable xp grinding.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Veksar
I always thought the idea of a sunken city encased in a bubble was cool. I thought the ruins were well laid out and it really looks a decrepit aging but once great city.

1) Unrest - all my toons at one time or another have to xp here. Pretty cool now that my highers can xp in the new unrest mission too! All time favorite zone....hands down.

2)City of Mist - love the layout and feel of this zone. Not to mention a nice little jog to get there in the first place. Decent cash/loot for appropriate levels (or well used to be anyways). Nice range of the level of mobs. One could literally stay in this zone from around lvl 40 to lvl 55 or so.

3)Plane of Tactics - love this zone for no particular reason. Maybe its just beating the hell out of big *** ogres (or getting the hell beat out of me for that matter). Nice loot as well.

4)Plane of Mischief - wasn't around during the "old version" of mischief, but like the current zone a lot as well. Lots of named mobs (if you can figure out how to get to em :). A nice change of pace. Gotta love when you accidentally click on some painting on the wall or some vase and ...oops....umm. where the hell am I?

5)Greigs End - nice xp zone. Other than when it was a hot zone, theres hardly no one there. Fun playing with the nameds that change you into random mobs. Some nice tribute loot as well.

Nagafen's Lair is still my favorite place to level up alts. I feel like I know every kobold by name, now.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Karanas (yes, I know), the Hole, Mistmoore, and Permafrost. Sometimes I'll get an odd, nostalgic itch for the cyclops in Ocean of Tears.

1) Kael Drakkel - I'm friends with giants and like doing their quests.

2) Katta Castellum - I like Validus Custodus quests and I like to learn about the history of the Combine Empire.

3) Blackburrow

4) Dulak - Money.

5) LDoNs

1) Muramite Proving Grounds - I like the trials, was the first challenging zone in OoW that we encountered, and on VS its not too crowded (Admittedly PoK is emptier on VS, than an average exp zone on US servers)

2) Befallen - first ever dungeon I went in so long ago. Was amazed to discover EQ has indoor sections. Great ambience.

3) Plane of Time - kind of a climax for my first ever guild. Relatively small potatoes compared to the cutting edge hardcore types, but definitely one of the high points.

4) Kael - a classic. Amazing the difference a couple of years makes.

5) Tipt (I think) - mostly because I spent so much time there, and because it was the hardest one group challenge (at the time) that we overcame.

Tower of Frozen Shadow as the storyline is intriguing and it's just great fun.

Katta Castelum for it's scenic beauty. Have you ever toured the Cathedral?

Blackburrow because of sentiment.

Droga/Nurga and any other dungeon loaded up with goblins.

Stonebrunt for it's Rangerly meditations.

-Blackburrow-Despite the fact that hunters here are few and far between, running through these dank corridors brings back welcome (and sometimes not so welcome) memories. It is even more enjoyable running through with a friend that I was with.

-Befallen-Babies need their keys. This was where I first learned the arduous(sp) nature of long camps. Especially with a group.

-Unrest-Creepy crawlies and nighttime nasties. I still remember the many screams of 'TORKLAR!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!'. I remember not being able to see within the zone-in tunnel and dying because of it.

-Dagnor's Cauldron-Beware the deep. The only reason I mention this zone is because of the time in which I was level 20 or so and was resting in the guard camp. Every 2 minutes a stupid goblin would run up and smack me, so I'd have to sit down again. After 2 hours of very little real progress, I was healed and allowed to progress on my way. Just a nice memory. Now, when I walk along those shores, I slaughter each and every goblin i come across.

-Ocean of Tears-SHARKS!!!! I conquered my fear of sharks within this very zone. Ever since I was 6 years old I have been afraid of sharks. No more. Back when the boats still existed, I fell in and fell prey to 6 sharks. Basically when i saw them I walked away from the computer. After hitting level 20 I returned to exact my vengeance upon these brutes, swimming the seas without fear. It was very liberating.

These are really in no particular order.

Been casually playing City of Heroes. Between work, kid, girlfriend, home, etc I don't really have the time to devote to the EQ xp/equipment grind these days. To be honest, EQ is a much deeper and more skill oriented game than CoH, but CoH lets me play in 30-90min chunks and feel like I've actually accomplished something. It usually takes me at least an hour in EQ to feel like I've really gotten started.

5 top zones (non plane) to play in (as opposed to zones I just like to visit):

Temple of Droga
Kael
Maiden's Eye
Skyfire
Temple of Veeshan

Also Chardok, Old Sebilis, Acrylia Caverns and Ssraa could just as easily be on the list.

I always enjoyed the diversity of camps and mobs in Maiden's Eye (despite the idiot zone trainers). There were some good challenges in that zone.

I like the look of the drake and wyvern models in Skyfire and its a good zone for ranger/druid tactics.

ToV is just a great challenge and still looks good even today, I wish the Devs would bring the itemisation up to date so I could convince people to go back there again.

First and foremost my favorite zone is Stonebrunt Mnts.
Both paladins, and my ranger have spent many levels there.

Unrest, DSP and Great Divide have been fun as well.

Hmm.. top 5.

1) Sol A, excellent zone. Lava and caves and goblins. Get to slaughter gnomes if you want as well. I'd love to see them revamp the loot dropped by the named to put it all worthwhile again, but I'd hate to see another Splitpaw/Mistmoore type revamp. Keep it all the same, just upgrade the named drops. Was basically the place I learned the game for the most part. Still my favorite spot for 20-35 levels.

2) Tower of Frozen Shadow (ToFS), One of the absolute best designs in the game. It takes some patience for the keys, but having each level unique and finally reaching the top to tserrina is an amazing accomplishment the first time I ever did it.

3) Kael, One of the greats in its day. My first *real* raid experience came from this zone. The Arena was like this glorious location that made me feel like I had arrived when I was finally there doing it. Let alone finally doing some of the bigger names, Vindi..etc.. It had something for everyone for the most part. The cycle in the chanter house is just plain awesome. The armor sucks now, but that little cycle is still fun to do.

4) Sebilis, One of the best higher end dungeons to be made. So many camp spots that it's ridiculous. Even to this day some of the items from that zone still stand as good to have.

5) Crystal Caverns, First time I zoned into this place it was out of fear from those dreaded Avengers after someone killed the Chief out in EW. We couldn't zone back out because for some reason they stuck around, so we just hung around inside. After about 10 minutes there wasn't ever any going back. Orcs, a town.. a bank, icy cone guys... and those spiders. And still Geo's lurking. I wound up spending many levels in this zone and loved every minute of it.

So let's see...

Old World: 1
Kunark: 1
Velious: 3

Rest: 0

Yeah, I'd have to agree that Velious was the best and everything after that just doesn't quite measure up.

Although PoP would probably have the next 3 if I went to a top 10 list. PoN, PoJ and CoD are great zones.

1) Oasis of Marr, undead and orcs... everything a pally needs.

2) Crushbone, have been there with nearly all my toons (didn't want to ruin my Ogre BL's faction).

3) Steamfont Mountains, I've spent soo much time there with my gnome mage... Bugglegupp must die!!!

4) The Overthere, ideal place in the late teens and pretty good loot for those levels.

5) Gorge of King Xorbb (Beholders Maze), because that's where my friends took my first character (warrior) in the beginning of time...

Bah, just realized why you said that as I read over my pasted old post. I got my burnoose about 2 months ago, just by luck. As I said in the other post, I camped that place for 2 weeks straight, 3-8 hours a day, killed Zed at least 25 times, and never saw the mask. About 2 months ago I go there to farm pelts for my necro to make padding so my bard can make armor... as I get closer to camp I check tracking and my old nemesis is up. I kill him thinking there's no way he'll have it, but sure enough, he did. I finally got to /ooc Zed's dead baby, Zed's dead! I've used it TWICE since. I actually HATE the way my toon looks as a halfelf... stupid helm graphics.

You sound like one of 'em Californians. I'm from North Carolina. We Southerners are gentelmen, but we tend to learn a lot of stereotypes growin' up (don't ask me why, we just do). According to what we learnt in high school down yonder, the way we talk is closer to "Queen's English" then even the way them British fellas talk now. Of course, studying languages has taught me to drop my "southern ways" of speaking, and I sound much more... educated now. Living up north has made me a much more aggresive driver also. Thankfully, I still love me some fishin', country fried steak with buttermilk biscuits, and good ole' sweet iced tea... umm hum.
