Jealous and MiffedFollow

#1 Jun 22 2005 at 11:44 AM Rating: Decent
I am a newbie to online gaming but not to rpg. Yesterday I was heading to Crushbone to get a ding to 16. In the entrance I come across a barberian. I think he was a warrior. He has 2 orc centur and a orc emissary pounding on his back (like he was AFK) The Barb CONed green to me as did both the Cent. the Emissary though CONed drk blu. I was going to chase them off when I noticed that the Barb was regen Hp faster than the 3 bad guys could dish it out. ??? he had to be lv 13 or below the Emissary a Red to him. though wow he's been buffed. I check,d out his gear, almost every piece of armor had regen hp? I have seen lv 50 warriors with worse stuff. I am so jealous and at the same time so miffed. Thanks for letting me rant

How did you know that all of his armor had regen hp? I can't see the stats of armor when inspecting.

Did the character have a normal PC name? Or did his name glow in GM green?

Welcome to Everquest, if you concern yourself with what everyone else has you will never be happy with this game. There will always be people with 3 times more stuff at half the level as you. The flip side to being twinked out like that is he will never loot an upgrade, never have a challenging fight, never do any quests, It's like playing any other game with /god mode enabled. It's fun for awhile but gets boring quick.

First, just because the barb was green to you and the Emissary was DB to you, doesn't mean that the Emissary was red to him. At that low a level, the difference between a green con and DB con can be 2 levels. Regardless, as sjames pointed out:

Unless you KNEW the stats and effects of each piece of gear he had, you wouldn't know what his gear was.

He was probably twinked to the gills also. Don't assume that because he's twinked that he buys pp or anything stupid like that though. I twink my alts too, and I've never bought anything in the game for RL cash. It's kind of unfair to be "jealous" of someone that may have been playing the game for years to earn that much pp if you've only been playing for a couple of months (or less). It's like saying "Mom, I think I deserve a Viper for my first car, because, well, Dad has one."

Xythex said it well:

I agree totally with Zig. Around the time that Velious came out, I spent a bunch of time worrying about the gear that I had. I would look at other peeps and see crazy gear (stuff with +5 stats, hehe) and think... "I should have that or better." But if you spend all your time worrying about keeping up, you'll never enjoy this game. I got over my obsession with gear. And when I see others that have much better gear, I am happy that their character can enjoy the prosperity that the game allows to those who receive these items.

Today, to a major degree, the items you have determines the in-game situations you can accomplish. But you have to focus on what you can do, and not what everyone is completing. Be proud of what you accomplish. And believe it or not, the way you play your character can make up for lesser gear. I've been in situations where my friends and I had older gear, but our knowledge of how to play our characters made us much more powerful than those who do not explore the different ways and avenues of playing their character.

Ok, I can accept that. Everyone needs to rant a little once in a while. As long as you realize that all of that time spent obsessing over his gear (from inspecting, writing down the names, going to the bazaar and searching, etc) could of probably been much more enjoyable if you were just playing the game for yourself Smiley: wink.

The complaints of twinks have been a bit more common around here lately, but my suggestion is not to necessarily listen to what they have to say (at least not all of it!). I personally have NEVER been turned down for not having "good enough" gear for any group on any of my toons in the past 4 years. NEVER. I HAVE been turned away from a group for not having certain skills/keys (understandably). If you're a rogue at a level that you can have max lockpick but you don't, you can't be surprised if someone asks you to join a run in Old Seb but turn you away when they find out your LP skill isn't high enough... that's why I say "play the game". You do what you can about the things you can do things about (clear as mud?). Work on your skills, learn your class, learn other classes... a lot of times the gear question won't even come up. My bard is the perfect example. I hunt in places like MPG. My gear blows. If I get hit for more then 2 or 3 seconds there, I'm toast. So I do everything in my power to avoid that Smiley: grin.

I for one will completely agree with this statement, as I personally know it to be true.

I was playing my newly created druid in Crushbone, looking for the last piece to complete his newbie armor, when a yellow Lego agged me. As my main is an epiced druid, I calmly snared him (yellows have tendancies to break root real easy), backed out of his melee range, dotted him, sat down to med. As he approached me, I recast the dot, backed up again, sat to med. Few seconds later, as the lego fell giving me his XP value and a few sp, a person who had been watching /said: "You have a great technique."

That means more to me than "You have some killer gear."

I never did mind twinks all that much as they generally didn't have a negative effect on my play. However, I have been getting more and more irritated with multiboxers lately. I have encountered more in the last month than in all the years I have been playing previously. Used to be most large guilds had a multibox toon or two they would bring out for raids. Now it seems every pickup group has at least 1 sometimes 3 or more bots in it, and they never seem to be all that good, certainly not as good as having seperate people playing those toons, and it no longer seems to be common curtoesy to let the group no before you join that the other 2 toons with you are boxed. It's only after the wipe we get "Ya, im not very good at boxing the MT, MH, and CC. Smiley: mad

Amen.

Thanks to the generosity of my uber ranger friend, I have some lovely hand-me downs. But the best armor and weapons don't help me a bit if I don't know when and where to apply my skills and songs.

Holy crap. That level 1 ranger has more HP then my 57 ranger. My ATK and AC are better though []. BTW, take the comma off the end of the link to view the magelo.

Speaking of twinking, here is a new game I invented.

Grab a 7 day trial, start a new character on a new server (no twinking from existing accounts under any circumstances). Do your best with the lil guy or girl, then JUST before the account timer gongs you out, create another trial account with same or related class, pass the gear accross in game (2 puters), use the gear to twink your level one, and see how much you can improve your gear. I'm up to third generation in this game and still having fun. Green goblins are taking a hammering.

Lol. Cute. I'd love to see someone come up with the best gear that could actually be used to twink a level 1 though. That one looks like they just grabbed the best items in the database that were equipable by a level 1 (which is neato to be sure). Didn't go digging through the equipment databases but at least a few that I spotted right off drop in zones that a level 1 *can't* get into due to flagging or just straight level restrictions on zones.

Still a pretty neat magelo...
