Slow MotionFollow

#1 Jun 20 2005 at 5:18 AM Rating: Decent
Hi, I just recently started playing on my laptop, it has more than enough specs to run EQ with everything enabled. However when the game is first started I move in slow motion with bursts of normal speed and then back to slow motion...even in zones with no one else in them. After about 45 min it clears up and seems to run fine. Any ideas what might be causing this? Makes pulling with my bard damn near impossible and is driving me crazy. Thanks alot

I am having the same problem with my laptop, except it does not speed up after 45 mins, and it should run EQ perfectly system wise. I usually only use my laptop to set up trader, but would like to be able to actually play on it, which I can't b/c of the slow motion. I have tried all resolutions and graphics options, no change at all. It can't be cooling because it starts off in slow motion right away before computer has chance to get hot. I have run spybot , adawre etc and its not those kind of problems.

Also I did not see an existing thread in the tech forum on this laptop slow motion subject?

Turn off in game shadows. Ensure you have sufficient free space on your hard drive, also kill any extra applications running in the background. Norton is notorious for causing these symptoms. You may wish to disable realtime file protection and firewalls during your play period. Also run Adaware and Spybot on your computer to ensure you do not have any spyware in the background.

Lastly, if you cannot find the issue that way, start killing processes. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, goto to the processes tab, write down the top process on a sheet of paper and kill it. Keep repeating this until you try all the processes. Killing some of them will cause your machine to reboot, log back in and then do not kill that process again (this is why your writing them down as you kill them). This way you will only have essential processes running in the background, Odds are one of these is causing your issue.

Also, make sure your DirectX is up-to-date.

A big problem could be your video cards. Computer manufacturers are notorious for cutting corners on laptop video cards. In order to get the miniaturization, they sometimes need to cut out some of the features of the big brother card, but they usually don't come right out and tell you that. If SOE recently made some minor graphics changes that require a beefier card (which I think they have, because even my full size PCIX card lags horribly in PoK now, even though it didn't lag AT ALL before the last patch), it could of made your cards practically "obsolete", as far as EQ goes at least, unless they change something back.

You could go to the official tech support forums at EQLive and report your DXDiag report to them. They'll probably just tell you to go away because you're playing on a laptop and they don't support laptops, but at least one of the community pc gurus might take a look at the info and be able to help you out.

One other thingn you might try,, yeah OK so it is basic..

Run the generic utility called Defrag. With all the patches and additional files SONY gives us, files get replaced often and it takes time for your computer to find them without defrag moving them closer together. I used to do this daily on my old machine before I got my new cool one..

I run EQ on a laptop. When I first tried it, the lag was litterally 1 or 2 frames every 30 seconds with all the graphics options off. I tried everything and then realized there were newer drivers for my graphics card, and after a bit of searching found them and ever since then EQ runs perfectly, even better than my PC. Even with all the models on etc (still a bit laggy in bazaar and pok at times, but I blame the RAM). So, I'd say make sure you have the most recent graphics drivers because it can make a HUGE difference.

After the current update, it gave more option commands, I went to see if they could help my slow motion on laptop problem. I found that turning advandced lighting on, makes me able to move at near normal speed, though my mouse moves choppier but usable. I changed it back and forth and seemed to work each time.
