Stupid Fry's I'll never buy another cpu from them again. They are zero for two! Got this message that pops up, eqgame.exe has experienced a problem and it has to close.

hubby had similar problem with a new PC, he was advised to try the following, might not work in all circumstances but beat throwing it out of the window....
remove the following from your EQ directory...
EQMAIN.DLL
EQGFX_DX8.DLL
EQCLIENT.INI
EQGAME.EXE
EQHARDWARE.INI
EQOPTIONS1.OPT (I actually couldn't find these on my machine)
EQOPTIONS2.OPT (I actually couldn't find these on my machine)
All files in the USERDATA directory.
Any file with the your characters name prefixed on it.
Run Everquest again and the patcher will download a couple of the missing files and viola EQ working again.
Good luck

at what point of the game does this happen?
Right after launching? After patching? I would definatley make sure the your DirectX is updated, as well as your video drivers.
Also you can try deleting eggame.exe from your directory and doing a complete file check. This will force it to download the execuatable again.
What are your PC stats? Any more information you can give?

I had a logon problem not after a cpu change, but a cpu FAN change, believe it or not! My computer shut down after the fan quit because of thermal protection. Even though I could change a fan, I went to my tech to have it done because I wanted the computer fully checked to be sure nothing happened during the meltdown. I came home, could do anything on my computer but eq.
Figured eq got corrupted somehow, re-installed it, which is ever so much fun as I have the original disk, and each individual expansion. Nope, wasn't it. Bought the new platinum, installed that. Nope, wasn't it. Called Sony, two hours of online chat/phone chat with tech and they kept pointing the finger at my isp. Called the isp, they walked me through resetting all sorts of stuff in the modem, even though gameplay was fine up until the fan quit. I was IN eq when the fan quit, which is why I suspected corruption of files.
Finally, my isp sent me a new modem, said that will fix it. I had my doubts as this connect problem hadn't existed before the fan quit, and now I couldn't connect either from my house or from my tech's store, which uses a different isp. That didn't help.
So I went out and bought a different game, played that for a month, was ready to uninstall eq when I clicked on the icon one last time to masochistically see the error box pop up and tell me it couldn't make a connection. This time I logged in and have been able to play ever since.
Go figure.

reply to Kelti - I have absolutely no idea why they were included in the list (and I agree I would find this a pain in the proverbial for the average player, but hubby hadn`t set much up on his new pc yet), but after 3 days he was willing to try anything & this worked. Maybe some of the files he deleted weren`t necessarily the problem but we had got to the hack & slash point of fault resolution.
For future reference:
For anyone who can, either get a small external hard drive or use a bunch of cd's and back up the entire EQ directory.
Installing EQ does not change the registry and is NOT necessary. I repeat NO install is necessary. All you have to do is make a directory and copy the EQ files to your new hard drive.
When I got a new PC this worked like a charm, and no patching when I logged on. I didn't even have to go to options, it had my new video driver ready (since I was prepared to shut off old pc, my last EQ step was going into EQ options and turning everything on, so it was all ready for new pc).
You will thank yourself and cd's are cheap. Even if you had a couple months of patches since the backup, you would be better off. All the ini files and UI setups would drive me nuts to reconfigure.
This will also work if you just get a new hard drive or you have to reformat.

After the patch be sure be sure to go into the options of EQ prior to log on this will select the new Video Card in the Eqclient.ini file.
Mine selected the card by itself, I didn't need to go in at all.
I RETURNED THE FKLHDFS PIECE OF LFDS THING!
I guess I'll just wait awhile to buy a new PC. The new one was gonna be for my kids. Currently I have two decent desktops and one old laptop running eq. The laptop will have to do for now. I realized the guy at Fry's sold me a refurbed compaq. I'll never buy a refurb again. The good news is, I got all my money back for the PC. Thanks for all your help.
