Potion BeltFollow

I was playing around with this feature last night and noticed a couple of things. For one, the potion belt has 4 slots, but only two were actually "active". The last two slots were greyed out. Secondly everytime I zoned, the potion belt disappeared (not huge deal, but annoying).

Anyone else have these issues? I'm not running any crazy UI's and for the most part (except for char info box), I use the default UI.

You can create a hot key for each of the potions on your belt, just left click on the potion in the belt and hold it until it appears on your cursor. I did this after buying an insta click gate potion and clicked the hot key...poof 1100pp gone just like that.

Oh well, now I know.

I love the potion belt, being on a PVP server it rocks!

However I can only activate two slots as well and I burned an insta gate trying to get the other two to work. Zoning and losing it sucks but I'm sure soon enough we will learn how to use it properly.

I could only use 2 slots as well, maybe the other 2 are for when you get aa's? Was annoying that it kept dissappearing after zoning. Very handy for my invis and sow potions....would love it if it stayed up after zoning.

hrmm, there aren't any new aa's with this expansion so don't think thats it.

All you had to do before was left click the potion till an icon appeared and place it in a hot key. Same with clicky gear. I have 5 items placed in my hotkeys. Right click them and they cast. Jboots are the best item to place there cast on the run. The potion belt is completely useless. I mean worthless.

Potion belt also works for multiple single dose potions. I tend to buy cloudy potions often (I try to keep 4-8 of them in my inventory). If I place a single one into the potion belt, I can click one key and it'll automatically use the potion, no need to keep moving them into the hotkeyed inv slot (great for those potions since they are instant-invis). It will also work if you don't have an open inv slot, so you don't need to keep swapping the bag and the potion. (Which, if you do it too quick, it can make you crash.)

It will also remember what potion you placed there last, even if you run out of that potion. So, with the above example, I don't have to reset any hotkeys after I run out (and then buy more).

Still not sure what's up with the 2 grayed boxes tho. However, these 2 boxes can also be hotkeyed...

I am glad to hear I only wasted a cheap potion, having tested it with a 10 dose I was going to sell, which became a 9 dose I gave to an alt.

Same about 2 slots, and the disappearing bit.

Well that was an ok attemp to defend a lame *** feature. The potion belt has two slots and does not even free up the inventory slot. If you use page one of hotkeys for normal stuff that leaves 72 hotkeys. As for remembering what slot it was in so does my method ... test it.

If the potion belt had 10 slots and would automatically appear when the effect started blinking, and you could cast anything on the run well that would be a nice feature. As of now it is a lame feature for folk who do not know about the hotkeys. It is completely worthless.

I thought the weapon belt was just as bad. I keep all weapons and so on in my last bag. When I use the weapon swap belt, it drops them where ever it feels like it (first available slot). It doesn't put them back where it got them (like a kid).

Be careful! That's your Delightful Orb, not a pearl shard! Don't sell it to the merchants.

Am I the only one who organizes backpacks? I doubt it.

My backpacks are very organized (have to be when you're main is a bard I think... between all of the clickies, weapons, instruments, masks...). I don't like the bandolier for the exact reason Kelti gave. I don't like it just dropping wherever there's a slot.

As for the potion belt...

I don't think you read Cafeen's post closely enough, or maybe didn't understand it. No, it doesn't free up the inventory slot, but you don't have to put the potion in a general inventory slot anymore, so you don't have to swap the bag and a potion to get the potion "prepped" before you cast it. That's pretty nifty if you ask me. Clickie gear... well, you just gotta deal with that for now.

I personally haven't played with the potion belt much yet. When people say it disappears when you zone, do you mean the window just closes, or that after you zone, you have to completely reset the belt? If you have to reset the belt, that sucks. If the window just closes, then that's no biggie. You have to think of it like a container. When you zone, all of your containers, inventory and stuff closes. Hit SHIFT+P and it's open again. I know some windows, like the /disc window, will stay open, but... meh.

No it doesn't reset the potion belt the potion belt itself just disappears upon zoning.

People that are complaining about the potion belt disappearing are just doing so to complain.

There's no reason it needs to be up, create a hotkey as stated by myself and a few others here. What's so hard to understand about doing that?

It was very late and I was kinda looking at the screen upside down...maybe that's why my thoughts didn't go through as intended?

To clarify...

Old method to hotkey a potion is -
Place Potion in 1 of the 8 general inventory slots (potions cannot be used while inside a bag)
Hotkey that inventory slot.

After the potion is used up, you have to place another one in that same inventory slot to be able to hotkey it.

Potion Belt Method -
Place potion in the belt slot
Create hotkey (from that window)

You no longer have to move any potions around to use them, they do not need to be in a general inventory slot (so...you can keep a bag full of them).

This works especially well for single dose potions that you may have multiples of because you don't have to keep rearranging. (With cloudy potions in particular, it's helpful incase that first potion wears off quickly, and...since they are insta-cast, you *can* cast them on the run).

Lastly, the PB remembers the last potion you put in that spot, even if you run out of them. So, if I have 8 potions on me, and use them all, next time I buy them the potion belt will already be set up. Without any clicking other than on the "BUY" button from the merchant.

Most of the wearable gear (that I've seen) is *not* potion belt enabled.

(BTW...if you hotkey a clickie item...you can just hit the hotkey to use it, you don't have to right click it in the hotkey bar).

Hopefully that makes what I was saying a bit clearer. It's not that bad a feature, and it's optional. Don't like it? Don't use it. /shrug.

<edit>
With the old method, you lose up to 9 inventory slots if you don't swap the bag for the potion to use it. This allows you to keep all the bags you need and just click 1 key to use the potion.

There just seems to be a bit of confusion on how to use it and what it really does in here. Usually happens with new stuff that people don't really understand.
</edit>

<another edit>
I was just looking at the Commands category of they Keyboard tab in Options. It appears as if you can map the potion belt slots directly to keystrokes. This will save a hotkey spot as well. (That makes it even better as I am at a premium for hotkeys with Kick, Taunt, Incite, Assist, Range Attack, Inc Message, /shield, AE Taunt, and 2 others that I can't think of atm).

I'm going to second everyone else's opinions and simply conclude that you have either never had to deal with potion use in a hurry, or maybe even have never played the game past like level 15 or so.

It is *not* an additional "bag" to carry stuff in. It's an organizer. You don't gain additional slots from it. The potions you carry still take up the same space in your bags that they did before. The difference is that you can use potions without having to put them into a main slot. For those of us who carry a lot of gear, this is a godsend. I typically only have one main slot that doesn't have a bag in it (specifically for swaping in potions, and so I can pick up a container if I need to).

Cloudy potions are the biggest example of why you need this. I play a paladin. I get no invis spell. Thus, I carry around these potions to invis myself. Prior to the belt, I'd have to move a potion into the empty main slot from a bag (so, click to open a bag, click to pick up potion, click to drop in the main slot). Then I'd use it when I need to invis (say I'm running through an area invised). Before I move, I then repeat the process, picking up a second cloudy potion and dropping it into the main slot (so I can click it in a hurry if the current invis wears off). Now, I can start moving. If my invis starts blinking, I have to click the potion in the mainslot, and then prep another one by opening a bag and putting another potion in the main slot. In fact, I've never bothered to create a hotkey for this because I know that whenever I use an invis potion, I'm going to need to shuffle another one around anyway, so I may as well open up the inventory screen anyway, right (your gui may vary of course!).

The point here is that I can buy the exact same number of potions, and put them in my bags in the exact spots they were before. But now, I can just click the potion belt (or hotkey!), each time I need to invis. I don't have to rummage through my bags to find another potion and get it ready. This will save a huge amount of time when it's needed most (I've just cast an invis, I don't know how long it's going to last, I have a limited number of potions to use, and I have to make it through some zone before I run out).

This is hugely useful. If you don't use potions that much, then it's not useful for you, but then it didn't cost you anything. You are welcome to not use it if you don't want to. For those of us who have always had to deal with needing to move potions around quickly, this thing is a goodsend!

this potion belt sounds pretty cool actually (this coming from someone who has never had to use potions just to let you know) the idea is actually really good now if theyd just figure out a way to make a "food & drink" belt that not only allows you to consume from it but also frees up some inventory space for other things besides food hehe!

Best I haerd was that it is an organizer. I deal with over thirty items. A two slot belt does not help. It is worthless period.

Then by all means, feel free to not use it. Those of us who think it's incredibly useful will use it. See how that works? Now everyone is happy...

It's not like SoE took something away from you to add this to the game. It's an extra thing. Treat it like that. You're the kind of person who'd be given a free TV, and then would ***** about it and call it "worthless" because it wasn't big enough...

Ok, question. why is there 4 slots on Potion belt, but only 2 are usable, is there a way to unlock the other 2 slots ?

I haven't heard of any way to unlock the other two slots yet, but the expansion is very new, and there's no way to really know exactly how things are going to work out. A couple of guildies were saying in guild chat last night that after they completed a mission, they all got a new AA available to them that raises all stats by 10 or something and max stats by 15 or so. We were all told that there weren't going to be any new AAs, but this would prove otherwise.

Long answer short, we don't know yet, but we'll figure it out eventually.

Yep, this annoyed me too. Greatly increases the risk of selling something precious.

Question:
If you happen to forage your slots full in-between weapon changes...next time you change weapons say from a 2hb to a 1hb and shield, will it drop your weapon on the ground for lack of a free spot in your bags?

I haven't tried that yet, but I'm thinking it would depend on your option settings. If you have it set to "fast drop without confirmation" or however it's worded, it may just drop it on the ground. If you don't have it set to that, it should pop up a confirmation window before it drops it to the ground. At the very least, it will give you that "Your bags are full and your "item X" was dropped on the ground" message. Those are easy to miss if you're not looking for them though. My best suggestion is to just be very wary about your space situation, wether or not you use the bandolier, since you would run into the same problem even if you didn't use the bandolier (except it would be your next loot dropping on the ground, which could suck if it was something good).

Or, it'll just stick on your pointer and let you place them in containers at your leisure (maybe).

This certainly bears some experimentation before trusting it completely. I remember having a similar problem when playing NWN with items dropping to the ground just by swapping gear. What was worse in that game is that you didn't even need to pick something up in between for it to happen. That game had inventory slots made up of "blocks" in which you fit various sized items. The algorithym used to put items into inventory was less then smart though, so it would often auto-equip gear that you'd placed correctly, but when you went to swap them, would place the small item in the "first" available space it would fit (which may be the spot you had for the larger item, and then fail to find a large enough spot to put the larger item. This happened all the time with sword/shield combos, since the shields were usually really big (like 3x5, while swords might be 1x3, or 1x4, or 2x4). It would place the sword where the shield had been, effectively blocking the shield from its original inventory spot.

I would *hope* that they did something a bit more intelligent with this in EQ, but I wouldn't hold my breath. EQ can have a similar proglem with different sized bags. Let's say you have a large 2h weapon in one bandolier slot, and a large sword and giant shield in another. let's also say you normally keep your lage weapons in a large sized bag, and giant in a giant. you could easily swap the 2h for the sword/shield combo and be fine, but then swap back and have it place the sword in the last slot in your giant bag, and then fail to place the shield becuase there's no longer a spce for it to fit.

I have *always* been of the opinion that SoE should have updated their item auto-placement process a loooong time ago. Instead of having items place into the first slot large enough to fit them, they should simply place into the first slot that is the smallest size it will fit in. This would solve a number of problrms. First off, it would prevent every item you loot from automaticaly taking up the one main slot you keep clear (cause a main slot is always the "biggest" size, right?). You could actually place your bags in an order and know where stuff will go based on size. You wouldn't need to worry about trash loot filling in slots in your weapons bag and making it a pain to swap gear (or more painful with the bandolier!).

I honestly have no clue why they *don't* do it this way. Sheer laziness IMO. It would be a trivial matter to change the code and it would be a *huge* improvement to gameplay. We'll see if the bandolier pushes them to finally do something about this.

As for 2 of the 4 boxes being greyed out, I had heard during Beta that there were certain items that would allow you to use all 4 slots. For example, some sort of belt that you equip would allow you to use 4 slots instead of 2. Most of the standard belts out there only allow the use of 2.

Don't remember where I heard this, and it could have changed, but that's what I recall....

Just ran some tests...

If you have a full inventory and swap 2 items (sheild/sword, dual weild..whatever) out for 1, the extra item will remain on your cursor.

I don't have the items on this toon to test what happens if you swap more than 1 extra item in though...probably will add both to your cursor though.
