EQ and linuxFollow

Do any of you have first hand experience with running EQ on Linux? I've spent the past 3 days re-re-re-installing windows and I'm about ready to ditch the whole thing... but of course I need to make sure EQ will work on Linux first.

in order to run EQ in linux you will need a few things.

1. you will need a http://www.transgaming.com/ account. IIRC they are $60 per year.

2. know enough about linux to configure and get your wineX up and running.

3. expect about a 3-5% drop in FPS, but also expect the game to run much more stable. i have even seen ppl do 2 and 3 accounts at once with wineX in SS, so multi-boxing is possible with wineX.

4. manufacture drivers. Nvidia is the best for linux. if you are running a modern ATI card you are screwed. the ATI drivers for anything newer then a 9500 DO NOT SUPPORT 3D in any fassion when it comes to linux. so if you are not running a Nvidia card you will not be able to play EQ in linux (yes there are other brands out there that will work, but not ATI) at least from all i have read when it comes to linux and ATI.

best of luck.

hmmm... that looks promising. I might try to run dual boot for a while and see if I can get used to running linux. There are some games I play that don't have support with transgaming (sims 2 and syberia), but I suppose I can keep running it in dual-boot mode, since I'm not short of disk space.

Thanks for the info!

In my limited experience, XP does not like to share and is hostile to the dual boot concept.

You might try running one of the distros that boots from a CDR and so is never really *on* your system, as far as Windows is concerned.

not true, just make sure you partition the HD prior to installing linux, and install XP first.

it is very easy if you do it in that order, and know how to handle your distros partitioner.

[edit to add]

that and the fact that it will take you roughly 2x as long to install XP as it will linux.

my dual boot system and install times:

P4 2.4 800Mhz FSB
1G PC3200 ram
sATA 80G Seagate HD
Asus MB P4P800 Deluxe (one of the first P4 sATA bords out there for gaming)
54X Mitsumi CDRom

those are all that matter with installing the OS.

winXP from boot to first login takes roughly l8min.

Whitebox linux from boot to first login takes roughly 11min if i do a full install with GUI, office suite, web server, ftp server, file server, e-mail server all configured and running at first login. or 5min if i do a bare min. install. OS only.

Debian on the same box takes roughly 3min for bare install, and roughly 5min for GUI install with no servers installed other then file server.

i also did a SUSE install on that box, but had issues with some of my hardware so i dropped SUSE. i currently dual boot winXP pro/Whitebox3 on that box with no problems at all.

Running Suse Linux 9.1 dual boot with Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4600. I installed the Linux as it came out of the box (so I did not partition before starting the install process, which handled the partitioning).

No problems thus far. However, I am not gaming on this particular box.

BTW, I applaud anyone who is gaming on Linux. I wish more consumer software companies would start to port their stuff to linux.

You said you dropped SUSE and that's the one I was looking at installing. You say whitebox3 works well for you? Do you remember what hardware it had trouble with?
#10 Oct 15 2004 at 8:44 PM Rating: Decent
suse9 basic semi worked, but i wanted more and the GUI was real heavy on the system.

there is nothing wrong with suse at all, it just did not like my MB as it has sound and gigabit NIC onboard.

Whitebox installed supper easy as it is just like installing windows. the installer is very intuitive to windows users.

if you install the workstation option you will have Gnome as your default desktop and that will be a great place to start. if you go with Whitebox (or any RPM based distro for that matter) look into YUM and configure the source list for it. life is so much simpler with YUM, then without it.

http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/

that is the link for YUM

http://www.whiteboxlinux.org/

that is the link for whitebox. get all 3 CDs just to make life simpler if you are a linux newbie.

also sign up and use http://www.linuxquestions.org forums. this will be a life saver for you as it is one of the best places to get answeres for all things linux.

just make sure to use the search feature as it works, and is very powerful.

any more questions about it and you can e-mail me, id be more then happy to help. keep in mind ive only really been using linux for about a year so im no guru, yet.

I've been playing EQ on Linux for almost 2 years now, and it's way better than it ever was on Windows. I'm running Mandrake 9.something (I can't remember what number it is), and I'm upgrading to Mandrake 10 soon. It's stable, the only time I get dropped is when a network connection goes out or there's a problem on Sony's side. You can actually switch between desktops and have EQ running on desktop 1 and do other stuff on desktops 2,3, and 4. I use this when I need to write papers or want to check email or look up stuff on Alla :) while logged into EQ. I have to confess that I don't know all the gory details, because my fiance is the one who's responsible for setting Linux and everything else up (he's the computer engineer), but I do know that I like it a lot better now. Also, Transgaming works for a lot of other games too, and I know that people got the Sims going on it, so The Sims 2 can't be far behind.

how about if i'm running a ps3(60gig)? LOL

and before you reply and bash me and call me a noob or soemthing other, please be aware there is a distro released for ps3. LOL

To those of you who are not aware about linux on ps3, here you go:
http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html
This link has an instruction and where to download installer for YDL 5.0.

And you can download YDL 5.0 here:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/downloads.shtml

You need a keyboard and mouse to install.

And if your missing files or need extra help, use these links as well.

1. go to http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html to install the boot loader installer.

2. go to http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/ps3/othero
s.bld to install the actual boot loader.

3. go to one of the following:
http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/yellowdog/iso/
ftp://ftp.yellowdoglinux.com/pub/yellowdog/iso/
and download the YDL 5.0 installer.

4. burn the YDL 5.0 installer ISO image to a DVD, using a DVD BURNER!!

5. download and read the instruction manual before attemption to install YDL 5.0 to your PS3:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/

6. Back up all of your game saves, downloads, media, etc. before installing YDL 5.0

If you need a bigger selection of mirrors to download the YDL 5.0 ISO from, you can find them here:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/downloads.shtml

Yes, shame on me, I did double post, but there is no delete button and well, ... here is the link for my other post:

I clicked on the link but I can't figure out how that translates into running eq on linux. what do i need exactly? an account or something? to buy a program? Please elaborate.

Also if in fact it's wine they use to emulate, you don't have to buy it from them, there are plenty of other places you can find it for free, because of the fact that wine is under that free liscense thing. Assuming that, you can download it from public ftp's, you just have to look in the right places. Just do an internet search or surf some linux fan pages.

You are wanting cedega, but have to have an active account with transgaming to get it. Unless things have changes, you use to be able to just pay for one month ($5), get everything installed, and then cancel your membership. If 6 months down the line, you decided you want to download a different version of cedega, you just paid for another month.

As I said above, transgaming uses cedega. Cedega use to be free (not sure if it still is or if transgaming took over it). Transgaming just makes using it a whole lot easier.

That's why everquest will run perfect on the ps3 using linux. because it's built into the system to dual boot, and this is comming from a fellow xp user.

Sure enough I'm preparing to install linux on my ps3 and microsoft sends me spam reguarding their new network server: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/beta/betacentral.mspx

Sometimes I think microsoft has spyware embeded in windows to keep track of what sites their users surf, but then again thinking that would make me feel a lil paranoid. No reason to be paranoid, other than a anti-trust lawsuit perhaps? Just messing around. LOL

I'm installing transgaming softwate to my ydl 5.0 on ps3 and I had no trouble installing python latest version. but i'm having trouble installing gtk2. The main problem with installing this is all the Dependencies and not knowing what exactly I need. Ps3 runs ppc64 version of yellow dog 5.0 and the only 64 that wine supports is amd, so i'm not sure if i use alpha or linux version. this is all very confusing since i'm so new to linux.

the site says that after the first run that the wizard does everything you need to get going, but without having pre-install tasks done properly, cedega will not even run. any helpful info would be nice. pref someone willing to make an effort with this, because I'm also posting all my work publically on forums, to help anyone wishing to run eq1 on their ps3. thanks for your time. have a nice day.
