Ugh, Video Card Problems.Follow

#1 Aug 12 2004 at 3:20 PM Rating: Decent
I hope this is wehre I post for this probelm. But anyways, Ok, I haven't been on EQ in about 1year and I missed it so I decided to start playing again, I installed all my games and patched (16hours of patching, damn 56k) Then after that I had DirectX problems. Then I fixed that. Then EQ wanted me to update my video card drivers. so I spent an hour and a half downloading those. This is where everything goes downhill. When I try to install them it says the drivers are not windows xp logo certfied drivers. But they were the only drivers they had. Sometimes they get finished installing but they still don't work and sometimes they start to install then my PC just restarts itself. I am getting really frustrated at my PC, I just want to play EQ and everything has gone to hell. So could someone please help. I have windows XP and Asylum GeForce FX 5200 256mb video card. Even the drivers the video card came with aren't working right.

Thanks

Try downloading the latest drivers from Nvidia's download site. You'll have to select "Graphics Drivers", your model (GeForce), and your OS (WinXP), and it should let you download the very latest drivers. Those are direct from the manufacturer and I would think they are certified. If not, I leave it for someone more qualified to answer your inquiry.

Those are the ones I got, But you don't have to pick your card. I guess their drivers are compatible with all cards. But I can't get those ones or the ones on my disk to install correctly. Thanks for replying though.

This thread from EQ tech support boards has an excellent overview of the driver upgrade process.

I'm using winXP and a GeForce FX5600 with DX9.0c and nVidia 61.77 drivers with no troubles at the moment.

For the record, Nvidia uses a universal driver file for all their Geforce video cards. This makes the download a little bigger, but it makes it a LOT easier for game makers to have their software compliant with the drivers.

It also greatly lowers the rate of people (read: dumb people) installing the wrong driver for their video card.

One driver for all products—the NVIDIA Unified Driver Architecture (UDA)—for rock-solid compatibility, stability, and reliability

Not that it fixes your problem, but it should give you some insight. If the driver won't install, you've got a problem somewhere else.

Don't forget to uninstall your old drivers so when you install the new ones they update.

I have never updated my drivers. More people have trouble after updating drivers than using out of date drivers. As a local computer company told me....it it works don't fix it.

SOE has brainwashed everyone to think the first thing you must do is update all your drivers until then that is your problem. I would suggest trying to log onto the game without updating and see if it works. If so forget the rest of the process. If you have and it doesn't chances are it isn't the drivers but then I guess it could be.

Well, there are different cases when it comes to driver updates. In some cases you can stand by the "if it works don't fix it" motto, but other times that is not the case.

In this case, I would use the driver level recommended by SOE to play. There have been times with patches when the latest NVidia drivers were not the best and there have been times when you almost had to upgrade your drivers to the latest.

It is a good idea to remove your previous drivers and install new rather than writing over the top, if possible.

I have the one universal driver from the website and one on disk. I remember when I first upgraded to new HDD. More Ram, XP, and a new video card I had problems installing them. My dad had to take our PC to the tech guy at his work. But. I run dxdiag and it doesn't recognize the video card it just has n/a in all the slots but it has information on the dirvers. So I don't know. I keep uninstalling and installing then my pc reboots by itself before the drivers are finished installing. I will search in BIOS maybe theres a problem there. Thanks everyone

Ok, I FINALLY GOT THE DRIVERS TO INSTALL AFTER 4 DAYS GRR, but there was still one more thing that the hardware wizard thing recognized, but I think it was my onboard video cause it was was under the dislplay stuff in device manager so I just disabled it. But now I get two DLL errors when I boot my PC, I will mess with those later. I just want to play EQ! >:O

If you have onboard video that is not being used, do yourself a favor and disable it in your BIOS, not just in windows. This might solve other problems as well.
