Fighting UnderwaterFollow

Ugh. I need to kill Wetfangs in Paludal and this requires me to fight underwater. At least I have enduring breath. Trying to fight, though, is very difficult.

The mobs seem to move up & down due to graphical glitches. One minute I can see them and the next they seem to have moved on. As they hit me and push me, I can get pushed out of the water where I can't hit em, and then they swim away. The pathing seems much different underwater - they dart back and forth in an unexpected fashion. (All this is in addition to the typical problem, where's the best place to camp wetfangs?)

Anyone have tips for how to fight underwater ?

Have you tried to root them? Fighting underwater is not as easy as on ground. Get you a fishbone earring and you won't have to mess with the spell, that takes a lot of stress out of underwater fighting.

Unsure if you are a melee or caster but I have a friend that is a monk and underwater is tough when the mob runs off on him. I am a caster and a simple root typically holds them where I need them. Take along someone that can root and snare for you.

get your swimming skills high. The greenblood shaman goblin in BBM is hard to kill (if your a low level). It seems to run off so fast because it SoWs itself. If you are a low lvl swimmer, watch the mobs swim away from you.

Root or snare (or duo to do this). Get an effective way to kill at the fight end... options are a big nuke, a few well placed arrows, a rogue back stab, or a pet that will follow and kill your mob.

Try NOT to rely on the spell, but if fighting close to the surface I guess that will be ok depending on plat and level.

In the water you also tend to sink unless you actively swim (curse eq realism). Pathing of the fish in PC is, however, completely whacked (they often appear in tunnels), so don't expect all water hunting to be the same.

Pull to an area that works. Dont fight on the fishes terms. Find an area where tracking is fine.

I have heard a lot about people sticking Wetfangs into the edge of the pond near the SH bandit camps, but never actually seen it pulled off. Ideally you'd want them where you can melee them but they won't retaliate, kind of like the ones that pop in tunnels.

Get a Fishbone Earring from Qynos Hills. (Drops off Hadden near the lake there. He's a 6 hour spawn, rather camped, with about a 1 in 3 drop rate.) Its All/All, Worn Effect: Enduring Breath, and +3 dex. They used to be popular for Mages doing their epics in that water zone, since the MOB that they needed to kill dispells, and they'd drown without a quick recasting or a worn effect.

Max swimming. Everyone should cap it as soon as they level. Its just one of those skills.

We're talking about a low level Vah Shir Shaman here. Hadden is perma-camped, rarely drops the earing and is probably too much for him anyway.

I've done this quest several times. The warping is as he describes. EB is not the problem. You do however need to go right down. It sounds as if you're trying to fight at the water's edge. Hence the loss of spell damage when you cross the interface.

Go stand on the bottom. Now you can see time left on buffs you can look before each fight to see when EB will wear off and re-cast if needed.

Of course due to all those bandit camps draining into the lake the water isn't exactly clear. Swim up to the surface and get to a point where your eye level is just at the surface. With care you can hold this while you look around. At this point everything becomes perfectly clear and you can see through the water as if through air. Find a fish and target it then go down to the bottom and nuke or dot it. When it is in sight root it and finish it off with melee. If it swims off on low health nuke it down or you may lose the corpse.

The fish roam but in fairly tight patterns so you will learn fast how to find them.

Have some sympathy for the poor rogue who has to collect the Wetfang Steaks. They have no EB and are restricted to melee underwater.

It also helps to get a high level SoW as this will alow you to swim backwards and manouvre a little more freely.

Try standing on the bottom when you fight. It works wonders in Kedge. The 3 dimensional fighting/swimming can boggle your brain after a while.

This is called an "exploit".

Just saying.
