Player given questFollow

I kinda liked the idea of player given quests always and thought about one when I realized the forge in Gloomingdeep got no use so far.

I thought myself of "posing" as a dwarf smith (a dwarf cleric toon I will create) in Gloomingdeep who teaches the art of smithing (up to making a file). Furthermore I have to stock file molds on the merchant which is not that easy but 40 should do

Prior I have to stock small pieces of ore and sharpening stones on the merchant (stackable and cheap - I just had to free 2 inventory slots on the merchant first)

1.If someone hails me I explain sharpening weapons and give away a rusty dagger (the sharpening stones have to be bought)
2. After someone brings back a tarnished dagger (as they dont get destroyed by a failure I have no problem with getting exploited) I explain how to extract ore.
3. After someone brings back a small piece of ore I explain how to make metal bits.
4. After someone brings back metal bits I explain how to make a file
5. After someone brings back a file I reward him with a book of "basic blacksmithing"

Furthermore I could cast Reckless Strength on them from time to time and eyplain that the higher WIS, INT or STR the faster the skill is learned.

What do you think? Will this be
a) appreciated?
b) enjoyed?
c) managable?

I plan to locate my toon near the water so I can fish while waiting for questers. I will eat the fish, keep the rusty daggers for my supply and throw back into the water everything else (to get people skilling up their swimming maybe too). I could get a 5th lvl cleric to a fishing skill of 30 that way and practice ALL his casting skills to the same lvl too =)

If you say this idea sucks based on your experience - feel free to tell me. I won't argue this time because I am not sure if

I like the idea of player given quests, but already toons can level each tradeskill to 50+ on abysmal sea quests.

So you're just going to sit there fishing in between teaching?

I like the idea of teaching things to new players.

I don't like this implementation. It seems to be vastly wasteful of your time and energy, quite frankly. If you get off on that, go for it. I'd just never expect anyone to do it for long.

The best 'player-given' quests I've been involved in so far (in EQ) are the 'gather this for me and I will pay you' quests.

I have found that those who want to learn about the game: do learn about it.

Those who want something to gripe about: they've found their holy grail.

Those who want to have fun with it: they pretty much have fun with it.

I think this is a great idea. I seem to recall from the first couple of years after EQ's release that guilds and individual players did this sort of thing quite commonly. Things like naked troll runs (create and army of naked level 1 trolls and assault Kelethin), drunken races, and scavenger hunts for various prizes. Sometimes these were geared towards guild recruiting, and sometimes just folks having some fun. It made EQ seem like more of a community, rather than a bunch of people just trying to get to level 65. It's still there if you look for it and meet the right people, but it's the exception now and not the norm.

I do think yours is a good idea though. Trust me, people don't forget other players who do things like this to help them out and enhance their playing experience. Espeically since it is MR, where I would wager the majority of players are true newbies to EQ or veterans of other servers who created toons on MR to get away from the grind and to enjoy just this kind of interaction again.

This is true but low lvl toons seldom venture there and many people neglect tradeskills at the start at all - some until they are 20+

I just think it would be rewarding for young players to learn from the start on that there are better uses for rusty weapons than just selling them to vendors =)

Actually if you want to be energetic, there are a thousand fun games you can play with others by setting quests. Your scheme actually involves pretending to be an NPC, which is funny, whacky, and probably quite boring (ask any NPC).

Announce in PoK "mini quests happeing in GFay in 10 minutes time, only for characters 1-10" then set some tasks limited any way you like.

Of course, people can/will cheat... its up to you to find ways to set up an enjoyable time that possibly focusses on trade skills. The way to avoid cheats is to include no-drop items (a bit of zone research will help here).

Rewards? Plat, of course, or low end items... or perhaps some nice baking/brewing items? I would think many classes would appreciate 10 dose SoW potions.

Don't forget evil races wont be able to go near guards in Gfay..

OK, I've been playing this game for years and never even HEARD of Gloomingdeep. Where is it? I would love to explore it. :)

gloomingdeep is the zone that the tutorial takes place in.

you can enter with any toon that is not yet 6th lvl - otherwise you have to create one - and the kobold charm you get here ROCKS =)

Well....I did my NPC impersonation but it didn't work out. I did FR 1 1/2 hours, SAT 2 hours and SUN 1 hour than I got fed off.

50% of toons asked for plat or stuff
20% wanted to group over and over again as my dwarf smith must have been really looking uber in his banded mail :D
20% acted like I was standing at an info desk (was ok to me but not what I intended)
9% started my "quest"
1% finished it

But it was fun nonetheless - kinda ;)

If I would have just set up in GFAY and "/shout QUEST: KILL THE SPIDERS - paying 1p per spiderling silk" I guess people would have cleaned the forest of every spider, thanked me for my WONDERFUL "quest" and I could have made money in the bazaar too.....
