EQ or EQ2?Follow

#1 Jul 21 2004 at 1:58 PM Rating: Decent
I have never played EQ before, and would like to start, but was wondering if it would be worth it to buy EQ now, or wait and just start when EQ2 comes out... any opinions from you more experienced folk would be helpful. Thanks!

seeing as eq 2 isnt out yet, i dont think that anyone can make a good comparison for you.

i can say that everquest is one hell of a game, its not very expensive, and seeing as eq2 has no time frame on when it will be out, except sometime in 2004, i think getting eq to start isnt a bad idea.

along those lines if you have never played everquest before, i believe getting it first will most likely help you in the gameplay for everquest 2, seeing as it will (according to what i have read on eq2 sites) have a similar feel.

Edited for spelling.

The "release" date for EQ2 has been pushed back to November from September.

I agree that you should start playing EQ and you can get bundle deals that will give all if not most of the expansions for a very low price.

EQ is over 5 years old and the biggest game of its type on the internet with thousands of people playing daily on each of its many servers. Content continues to increase with expansions in addition to all the original content being available to new players.

Patches regulary correct problems and enhance options for players and SOE is set to offer all of this for about the cost of one of the expansions.

There is a lot of support for EQ through this site and similar ones.

EQ2 is barely into beta testing and release date keeps being moved back. EQ2 will require a super computer package to play at the recommended level.

So IMHO, EQ you get an established product which has a huge fan base who are willing to support new players vs. a product that isnt even available now and no one really knows what it will be like.

Choice is to sit around in wait (for who knows how long) for something that may or may not be as good as EQ or jump in now for less than $20.

If you would have waited just 17 more days you could have posted your response exactly one year after the last response to the question...

I got quite a chuckle out of that whole situation.

After playing EQ for so long and then switching to EQ2 I found EQ2 to be kinda boring so i just went back to EQ.

I have played EQ1 since 2000. I had three accounts (two were given to me by players that quit the game), and three-boxed regularly. Had 5 players 65+, two time flagged, all VT keyed. I loved EQ1. By 2003, I was burned out. I liked the game, but it became a chore. Raids every night, backflagging, DKP gathering, epics, AA farming.... I felt that I needed more and more time to do stuff. Every new expansion meant more time blown to "beat" them. Every rare camp agravated me, every rare drop that I didn't win only meant more time spent to try getting another chance. I stopped playing cold.. no desire to come back.

When EQ2 came out, I gave it a shot. EQ2 was really fun at first. All the stuff I hated about EQ1 were gone. "Rare" spawns only took at most 2 hours to spawn. Everyone can solo. The quest journal was a godsend. No one could KS you, no one could train you, no twinks, no powerlevelling, no farming.

But, unfortunately, the things that made EQ1 agravating are also the things that make it rewarding. Completing things in EQ2 never felt rewarding because there was little risk in achieving them. Sure, some quests took a long time and required some luck, but it was just a matter of time before you could finish anything.

Also, EQ2 took out a lot of things that made the game "realistic". Mobs do not chase you all across the zone. They stay in predefined areas and cannot be pulled past them. Mobs are either in preselected groups, or solo, so you know exactly what you are pulling, but the art of pulling is gone. You can attack a solo-tagged orc hanging around a bunch of other orcs and you will get no adds. Fights are not very creative. There is no real kiting of any kind. Once a mob becomes "gray" (green in EQ1), it cannot touch you - you can have 30 gray mobs whacking you at once and you will barely be harmed at all.

That said, EQ2 has some fantastic features. Some people said that it should be different that EQ1 but I disagree. I wanted EQ2 to be EQ1 with more stuff. It happens to be a new game that makes use of EQ1 names.

Maybe EQ3 will be what I'm looking for.

Good points Ardnahoy,

EQ2 has a lot of eye candy and many good things like the Quet Journal. But is not as fun as EQ1.

I played eq2 for 2 months and quit. I am considering coming back to EQ1

Honestly for me, I'd say EQ...however...I play EQ...I've played EQ2 and didn't like it that well.

I'm biased in that respect. I think most of the problem that I had with EQ2 is that all of my friends were still playing EQ. Since they weren't there it just wasn't as fun.

What can I say... I <3 Aude Sapere.
