A ranger of my acquaintance whose LFG message is "5900 hp 1600 ac unbuffed" actually makes quite a good tank. At least with a ranger you know they can hold aggro.

In any case the thread was about the inability to turn rooted mobs into pincushions fast enough and nothing to do with ranger tanking.

Except perhaps the original poster. But the post you made defending yourself did kick ***. Too bad it was like unloading several cans of Raid on something you thought was a roach but turned out to be sockpuppet.

Wow Cobra! You have got to verify that 5900HP and 1600AC from your friend!!!

If that is attanable unbuffed, that is amazing!

Doing everything I can in the bazaar and a bit of undrops, at level 56, I have 3000+ HP and 1320AC if switching to pure AC gear.

The toons I have checked out on Magellan and the threads on other ranger boards seem to point to a 1300AC soft cap which seems understandable. The 1600AC just truly stands out. 5900HP, max sta, and buffs, I can see.

Corner your friend, twist his arm, and tell me how! Wow!

Journey far and fare well!

Honestly, that ratio is a bit low on the HP from my perspective. But for unbuffed stats, those are well above the norm. Not that I'm saying 5.9k unbuffed is "low", by any measure. Just that I'd have worked a bit more on HP before getting 1600 unbuffed AC is all. Depending on where you hunt, that much AC isn't doing you that much good.

Heh. But sometimes (alot of the time actually), you don't get to pick and choose gear. Especially not at that level. I'm guessing highish end tier 4? You take what drops for you... :)

You wont be able to buy that level gear though. But it's quite obtainable in an ele+ guild. The math isn't that hard to do. You can still only add so many HPs with buffs. Say 3kish tops (I'm not even sure if that much, I think less actually). There are tanks hitting 11k now IIRC. So if warriors are hitting say 8k+ unbuffed, a ranger can certainly hit 6k without even needing the "very best" gear.

But that's well beyond what your typical ranger in a group will have. But then again, if you aren't in an elemental guild, probably the toughest place you are hunting is BoT. Guess what? You don't need anywhere near those stats to tank in BoT. You can tank there with 6k *buffed*, without causing too many problems. And I'm reasonably sure that more then 1300 AC is a waste there as well. It's all relative.

There was a fair bit posted after PoP and even more so after GoD came out that indicated a lifting of the "soft cap" on ac.

As I understand it it wasn't actually a cap but the ATK rating of the mobs meant that over around 1250 the return diminished so rapidly that it appeared like a cap. I suppose that is one definition of a "soft cap" - a quirk of the maths.

With mobs having higher ATK in the new expansions the higher ac started to be useful again and effectively lifted the cap.

Now there was something from the Summit about them firing a programmer who put silly ATK figures on GoD mobs and adjusting them down. This may have altered things yet again.

I post in the sure and comfortable knowledge that Gbaji will correct me if I'm wrong Smiley: smile

And neverdone there is a massive difference between 65 with 400AA and ele+ gear on a server with virtually no No Drop. and what a 56 can achieve with the best droppable stuff on normal servers. I have healed the guy - I don't have to ask him his stats.

It is a name I'm sure you will recognise though
