I can't really say much to this question. You just stand there until you are getting too low on hp or until the monster dies. A lot of beastlords like to sit back and just let their pet do all the fighting, but I hate that. Defeats the purpose of being able to tank by yourself. If you bind wounds it's easier to self heal than waste mana on your pet anyways, so that's probably your best bet.

Get better armor and keep defensive skills up. Remember that you aren't a warrior, and will take damage tanking. Of course, it might also be relevent to know your level, but this advice is pretty sound for most beastlords below level 50.

Essentially you'll find yourself stepping in and out of fights, taking turns with your pet.

I know what you mean. I also have a bst. What you will have to do is stand back and let your pet do it for awhile. Keep him healed and keep your slow, debuff, damage over time and direct damage spells on the mob then come in to the fight toward the middle or end to finish it off. Even with the best armor you will not be able to stay toe to toe with the mob for the whole fight unless you are fighting a very weak mob.
The best time to try to stay in the fight with the mob is right after you get a new pet. He will be at his best then and the worse time is just before the level where you get a new pet.
The level pet I found that really gave you that big advantage was at 39. They can really mow the mobs down then. I was able to solo hill giants with him. Don't forget to give him weapons. He will use them and they increase his damage output.
