well, first of all it's a huge plus that you found this site here. read a lot.

1 - get hardcopies of maps from your surrounding areas if you don't have them yet
2 - make a hotkey with /loc. so In case you die and you're above lvl 10 you know where your corpse is.
3 - try to find groups. best place to look is in Freeport itself or go to Crushbone (where is that? - use the Zones area here on alla).
4 - talk to people and group
5 - never beg for anything - it will get you a bad reputation...

Don't worry about losing your corpse, it has been changed so that they are always recoverable in some form or another. You will die allot in this game so its good to get used to it at lower levels. Before you die type
/loc
so that you have the location in the zone of your body. Type
/corpse
to drag your corpse to a safe place to loot it after you find it.

If you have the Shadows of Luclin expansion you should become acquanted with the bazaar. That is where you will want to purchase all of your weapons and armor, in addition you will want to sell much of the stuff you loot there. You will get much better prices than when you sell to vendors on allot of it. As soon as you zone in you will get a message to type
/bazaar
to search for items. You can sort by type/class/slot and many other options to find just what your looking for.

Once you have purchased a traders satchel for appx 1.5pp and make your way to a trader's stall then you can type
/trader
to sell your stuff.

At your level you can make a nice killing off of spiderling and spider silks and medium or high quality hides. This will get you all the money you need to buy your spells. I would suggest doing your Newbie armor quests if your class/race has them. Someone else will have to chime in on this one.

If you need help dont be afraid to make your way to the Plane of Knowledge or the Bazaar and /shout and ask for it. Some people will flame you but many people will be more than happy to help.

You may want to make your way to Greater Faydark to find people around your level range to hunt with, you are also very close to the level you can head to crushbone.

Also as an unrelated hint, never post an email address you like on a searchable public forum. These are regularly scanned for addresses by spammers. you can get around most bots by typing REMOVETHIS in the middle of the address somewhere if you really want to leave your address.

Good luck and have fun. If your on my server send a tell if you have questions.

I'd like to comment on a different issue: You posted your email addresses and one appears to have your real name in it. It is good practice to never use identifiers such as your real name on internet forums.

You never know who is out here watching.

You did not mention what server you play on. Please post it here. If its Fennin Ro, I would be happy to group with you on an alt and help you out in game. I think I have a level 10 Shaman collecting dust

I started playing this game a year ago. I am an old man compared to some, and a spring chicken compared to others. A friend got me hooked, and three of us rolled at the same time, been leveling ever since. A couple of hints when starting out...

Kill stuff. It's the best way to make money, regardless of what the bazaar whores will tell you.

Group. It's the best way to make experience, and the best way to make friends.

Don't worry about your body. It's not nearly as scary as it seems right now. You will die, countless times, and accepting that is the best thing you can do. Once that is over with, you can move on almost fearlessly.

Get ready for the slowdown in experience. At low levels, experience flies by. It can be kind of a let down when you no longer get a blue a kill or more.

Bottom line, stick with it. You will get frustrated, you will hate the game, the developers, even your own toons because of their limitations, but there is always tomorrow. Log in again and get a new experience.

Oh yeah, and definitely don't beg. :)

Look into the newbie armor quests for Pallies there in Freeport.
You get the quest, and kill stuff to combine for different pieces or armor. Not bad armor at all for a young Paladin and another benefit will be that you'll get familiar with the zones around Freeport.

Also be aware that the guards in East and West Freeport don't much care for Paladins. Try to avoid doing quests that will harm your Freeport Militia faction until you get to higher levels. Or do as few as possible to get things you need as a young Pally.

They won't kill you on site until you start doing lots of quests that decrease your Freeport Militia faction though.

Ah...another pally. Welcome young and noble night. I wouldn't look at moving up to level 9 & 10 with trepidation, but rather will pure excitement. Level 9 is when you get your first round of spells. At this level you become a hybrid instead of a pure melee class. You will get your very first healing spell (beyond lay on hands), a small armor buff spell, and Yaulp (which increases your strength and a little ATK). Starting at level 9 you now become a warrior who can heal himself. Your class definitely does change at level 9.

Since this is your very first character with EQ cash definitely will be a bit of a problem. Most of the time you have two basic choices: creating much needed tradeskill items or hunting mobs that drop better than average loot for your level. One area that you will eventually want to hunt in is Butcherblock Mountains. This is a really well created newbie zone that offers plenty of places to either solo or group. The goblins in Butcherblock (the green goblins...not the aqua goblins), drop heads and blood vials that sell for around 4pp each. If you get into serious trouble there always are a number of guards that will help you.

Once you hit level 15 you get another very useful spell - Lull. This spell reduces the aggro range on neighboring mobs (a.k.a. opponent), so you can single pull a mob from a camp. This line of spells will become essential for your ability to “break” a camp, and will really help you out in soloing. Once you get this spell try attacking the goblin warrior camp in Butcherblock for XP and cash. Around this level you should be able to make around 100pp an hour hunting on a good night. This will help you with armor and weapons upgrades.

Alternatively you could work on your tailoring tradeskill and attempt to make leather padding for resale. The going rate in the Bazaar is typically around 50pp. To make this you need to hunt spiderlings for spiderling silk, and various cats (the lions in East Commonlands works) for their pelts. Save any low quality, medium quality, or high quality pelts. You combine the silks to make silk thread, and then take the silk + 1 LQ pelt to make the leather padding. This is a classic way of making cash, for the people working on their blacksmithing skills are always looking for stacks of leather padding.

One tradeskill you will probably want to work on as well is fletching. You can buy almost all of your items easily in North Freeport. With Fletching you can make your own bows and arrows, which is great for pulling mobs. Paladins can only advance to level 75 in archery, but even if you missing hitting your target it still will come after you.

Starting at level 9 you will probably want to start your newbie armor quest (if you haven't done so already). If you are in Freeport go to the Hall of Truth in North Freeport and on the second level hail Edwardian Holyblade. If your starting city is Qeynos you want to go to North Qeynos and hail Davloran Girionlis. I did the North Freeport quest. Some helpful hints if you do this one: 1) raw bamboo is sold in NFP in the blue building next to the bank 2) Crude iron ore drops from the various orcs in East Commonlands 3) Armadillos & coyotes can be found in the Northern Desert of Ro 4) Shop around for items around Freeport or the Inns in the Desert of Ro or East Commons. Often people will sell you necessary components at the vendors, which will save you some time farming for them.

Welcome to EQ and I think you made a good choice of starting a pally. You will begin getting your spells soon, so you will have a feel for both casting and fighting.

As for equipment, do your newbie armor quests (available from one of the Pally guildmasters) as this is probably the only way you will get good stat items this early in the game unless a higher level person gives you some items.

You need to kill, kill, kill - builds both exp, and loot in addition to improving your skills.

Don't worry about dying - /loc is a great way to keep track of where you are and good habit to be in. But you will often be able to find your corpse easily by hunting near a familar landmark. Get the maps which are invaluable for finding your way around.

Don't be afraid to go exploring either, EQ is huge and there is a lot to see.

Good Hunting.

I was the same way when I started druing Kunark's expansion. Wanting to venture out of Misty Thicket at lvl 9, no money, no spells, no gear..stick in hand and a beetle eye.

Take a visit to www.eqatlas.com and understand the geography. Know your sournding zones, make a /loc hotkey so if you think you are going to die, press that and then you can review later your loc to find your body.

Go to an Alchemy shop and buy a chipped bone rod, they should be cheap and will point you in the direction of your body. The only rules with this are that you need to keep it in the bank and retrieve it after you die and then be in the zone when you right click it.

Once you get up in level, you can afford coffins and ask your friendly Necromancer for help on summoning your corpse. Rules with this are, both of you need to be in the zone and he needs to have the coffin.

Ask for a bind in the safe city closest to where you will be hunting. The good thing now is that there are soul binders close by, this was a new addition during Luclin and makes finding a bind easier. Some bind capable classes are Druids, Clerics, Enchanters, Wizards..

Remember one thing, to gain experience in your class, you need to explore, but don't be affraid to do that nor affraid to die. It will happen and the last thing you want is to be handicapped by that fear. It's part of learning and taking chances in the game.

Take a peek at http://www.eqatlas.com and look at the zones by level. That way you can have an idea of where to hunt and what to hunt.

Hope this helps.

I am replying to the person who asked what server I was on.
I am on Solusek Ro Server A human Paldin level 8 with only 4 Platinum Poor weapons and armor
and so far some great info from you guys. I have tried to buy the maps but after filling all the details in correctly up until it is supposd to ask for details about my credit card it just sits there and will not go to the next screen and the machine has not locked up. If someone could point me in the right direction on how to get to Crush bone or Greater Faydark I would be forever in your debt.

From me Jimmied many thanks to all who have replied. A tremendous game and when I get the hang of it will someone tell me the best way to log off when it is time to eat and sleep and work. I know the procedure but it is making myself do it that is the problem. God help us if E Q 2 is even better. The divorce rate will go up.

1. Never pay for any guides/hints/etc. Pretty much everything they have, is "common" knowledge to other people, and you will find the information your looking for if you look for a while. The only exception woudl be if you want to become a premium member of allakhazam. The search function makes life a little easier.

2. As for money. You stated your a human, which gives you a good start for not having to worry about faction. The first thing I suggest is taking a little trip to freeport and killing the rats outside. Plaque rat tails sell for 1pp each.. that can get you going. You can also try killing Kobolds at the ak'anon camps, or spiderlings for silks and sell them to players in the bazaar. Most of all though, do your newbie armor/weapon quests. Most people new to servers or with little money rely on the newbie armor well into their 20s, sometimes higher.

3. As others have said, don't beg. It does get you a bad reputation if you do things like "/ooc can someone give some plat to a new paladin" - most players don't like that for the simple fact that they had to do the same thing you are doing. And the reality is, most players really don't have millions of plat coming out of their ears. That being said asking players if you can loot a drop if no one needs it or something to that effect is more than kosher in most situations.

I am on Solusek Ro.

#1. Don't forget to do the tutorial. It gives you a very nice charm item. edit...doh! u'r level 8 when u posted orignally and probably higher than that now. I think you can only access the tutorial at level 6 and below. Well, I hope you got your charm. I'll add another one. /charinfo tells you where you are bound. If you are unfamilar with the zones, where you are bound, relative to where you died, is important.

#2. Either learn to use the /loc command or the in-game maps. It takes a while to become familiar with your surroundings. www.eq.toolbox.com for more maps then is provided in-game.

#3. Yes yes yes the newbie armor quests are a great way to learn the ropes and not feel like you are naked and have only a butter knife for a weapon. There is a good walk-thru on this site, with links to the exact mobs and zones you need, or if you like, www.eqtraders.com

#4 Send "Raddan" or "Sittingbul" a tell. Sittingbul is a ranger that can help track the mobs for your quest drops.

#5 Do become familiar with the bazaar. Easiest way is make a second character and upon entering the world, run them right to the bazaar and park there. Then every time you logon, log your mule and check to see if anything good is for sale cheap. If you see something you like, write it down and the price. Then keep checking back for a week or two and record the prices. Eventually you'll get a feel for the difference of a good price and someone trying to find someone to pay top dollar.

#6 Don't get frustrated with a lack of groups. Put your LFG tag up and use the LFG window, and then head to a camp or area you can solo. There aren't a lot of low level toons around now-a-days that aren't getting powerleveled. But soon, you be hitting zones that have enough similar experienced toons and you will get groups. Experience Crushbone on Faydwer. That zone is kinda a staple of EQ. Its supposed to have a nice XP bonus and it's a good place to both find group and solo. Keep your eyes open for a "shiny brass shield" while in CB. It's a nice starter shield that you should be able to loot for free.

#7 I agree those green goblin camps in Butcherblock are a good place to get PP as well as some XP, and will require you to learn your toon in order to be successful solo. I would complete your armor quests and get your first set of spells before heading there, as was probably mentioned. If it gets boring, then skip over to Crushbone. When Crushbone gets boring, Paudal Caverns on the Luclin moon is a great place to find XP, cash and a group, but there are many other places. As a pally, your bonuses vs. undead will help you in Kurns Tower and Unrest, two zones you could do instead of Crushbone and PC that also have very good ZEM (XP bonuses).

#8 Look up an item before you sell it to an NPC. There is a chances it could sell for a lot more in the bazaar. Spiderling silks sell for 5-10pp each to other PC's, but less than 1 gold (1/10 of a PP) to an NPC. After a days hunt, run your toon to the nearest bank. Then put anything you want to sell in the bazaar in the shared bank slots. Log out that toon and log on your mule. Then take the items out of the shared bank slots and put them on you trader. You'll need a special trader sachal that sells for a little more than 1pp from the NPC's in the building in he middle of the bazaar. Put everyhing you want to sell to other PC's in that sachel, and type /trader. As far as bags for your Pally, backpacks from merchants in your guild in Freeport (where you have the best faction and should get the best prices both buying and selling) will do you fine. You also get a (heavy) 10-slot container just for starting the newbie armor quests. If you desire more slots, delux toolboxes are a 10 slot container sold in PoK for less than 2pp, if you have the STR to be able to carry the 10 stones they weigh. If you often find yourself encumbered, you may want to get some hand made backpacks, which also have 10 slots but weigh less. They are more than 20 times the cost of the toolboxes though.

#9 Type "/autojoin auction". It's a serverwide chat channel for the purpose of buying and selling things. It'll help you get a feel of the going rates, and what's out there for your toon.

Finally, again, send Raddan or Sittingbul a tell. I will help anyway I can.edit...doh! u'r level 8 when u posted orignally and probably higher than that now. I think you can only access the tutorial at level 6 and below. Well, I hope you got your charm. I'll add another one. /charinfo tells you where you are bound. If you are unfamilar with the zones, where you are bound, relative to where you died, is important.

In case you have not found it yet. To get to G'fay click on any of the stone book/pedestal things to zone to Plane of Knowledge. from there run to the Kelethin stone to zone into Greater Faydark, crushbone is at the far North of this zone. You don't need to pay for maps, you can obtain them for free at EQ Atlas

I went on the muse something or other because I wanted some detailed maps of Freeport and the near and far surrounding area and I was willing to pay for them. I filled in everything ( all the fields thjat I was supposed to fill in< The price was about £8 ot £9.00 It then showed all the different type of credit cards. I clicked on the Visa and nothing happened. The computer had not locked up as I was able to go back and repeat it all without restarting the computer.
Why do you ask ? You seem to imply that I can get them without having to pay for them.

I wait for reply with bated breath.
