RoguesFollow

I'm sure there have been many posts on rogues, but I just felt like posting this. In AD&D which this game is largly based on rogues are meant more to be scouts and disarm traps, open locks, etc. Yes there are some cases where this happens in everquest but they are few and far between. Rogue is my favorite class in Baldur's gate and other such games and seem near essential to survive. I just think they got the role of rogues all wrong in this game.

Not to fan the flames or anything, but RPG rogues/thieves or whatever they are called have always been my favorite class or type of RPG character. I have sometimes leaned in the direction of what I jokingly called a "stealth fighter", but I have always enjoyed the quickness, agility, and unique abilites these types of characters have. Honestly, I probably didn't role play them very well, because I rarely stole anything (except maybe as a challange).

It did take me a while to get used to the difference in the EQ Rogue class. Here they are almost pure melee, they just have different fighting skills than a warrior. The "other type" of RPG rogue only entered melee as a last resort. I kind of miss the non-melee skills other RPG rogues have, but at least pick locks and disarm traps have become a little more useful in EQ since LDoN. And I do LOVE being able to play Hide-and-Sneak better then almost everyone else.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I guess they do have many of the same types of skills. It just seems somehow different since in EQ they are typically referred to as just a DPS class. Maybe there just isn't as much opportunity to use those other skills in EQ, at least, not for getting any XP. I'll have to think about it some more. Maybe it's just a question of finding a way to play an EQ rogue other than the normal stereotypical DPS way. Of course, that would be much easier with a consistent group rather than soloing and pick-up groups.

I guess, but it seems when I do LDONs we almost never have a rogue. Yes there are traps, but nothing that really is a serious threat as far as I have seen. Maybe if there was treasure chests with good treasure that are locked and traped with a nasty AE damage spell then rogues would be more of the class they have been in the past.

You mean put in something like, oh I don't know, gems and jewels (blue diamnds and such), make it give group XP when successfully cracked into, then seal it with a nasty AE dot that is pretty much death unless a specific LDoN camp bought spell is used and quickly....Wait, that is exactly what is in the dusty/dark barrels, chests, coffins, boxes..etc that a Rogue can crack into with no danger whatsoever as long as he/she knows what they are doing and does it well.

So far the best I have dragged out of one LDoN from just the traps was: 2 blue diamonds and a black sapphire. As I was the ML, I was going to sell them, till I as informed by the two dwarves that they neaded the blue diamonds and would pay me what I got from the vendor for them (209 plat) and the Troll SK chimed in that he could buy the black sapphire also for 250 pp as he needed it also. So I sold them to the groupmemebers instead of selling them to the vendor and then split the combined loot with the group.

Normally our takes at the end of the LDoN (47th lvl or so) was 30plat or so each for a full group. This time it was a whopping 180 each. That of course was the best I have hauled out of the LDoN's to date. Normally if we get anything of value it will be one, maybe two diamonds/blue diamonds.

They were actually meant to be like that originally, it just wasn't working at all so they went the DPS route.

Rogues are the best scouts in EQ by far. My guild does nothing at all that hasn't been scouted by rogues (as far as new content). The chests etc in LDON can also contain augments and potions. Not always that great, but sometimes pretty decent.

Getting through Inktatu without rogues would suck =p

Agreed. Sense Traps is a joke (and I sure as hell will not spend a dozen AA's on them to decrease the reuse timer) and lockpicking is very situational.

We only shine at two things: scouting and DPS (maybe three with corpse dragging). The good part is that we shine brightly when it comes to that.

They may have been meant to be like that, but when the game first came out there were no traps that I can recall and very few locked doors all of which had keys that you could camp for.

That would be why it didn't work out very well.
