The classes that can use magic are termed 'hybrids' there are 3 main hybrib classes

Paladins: Warrior / clerics with a once per eq day super heal

Rangers: Warrior / druids that at high level cause uber damage with bows

Shadow knights: Warrior / necromancers with a once per day super nuke.

none of these can be played by barbarians but you could fall back on beastlords who technicly can fight but are usually too busy doing other stuff while thier pets rip a hole in stuff.

Barb beastlords are a very good choise for a first char since your pet is powerfull enough to make up for short falls in gear.

Yeah, the only magic using Barbarian classes are Shaman and Beastlord. Both can melee to some extent (BST better than Shaman for pure melee damage, but shamans get slows, far superior heals, etc) but neither is like playing a knight, ranger or even a bard for a mix of magic and smacking things.

If you're hung up on playing a barbarian, beastlord might be the way to go. Otherwise, I'd look into one of the classes Tarv mentions.

Although squishy in comparison to the others, if you gear up a necro correctly they can offtank in group situations with ease. I know of a necro that just wails on the mobs in group situation and no one thinks twice about it because he will almost always be waiting for the rest of the group to finish of theirs. It all comes down to how you gear up.

He's have a devil of a time making a barbarian necromancer though. Barbs don't fit well into robes; tends to pull across the shoulders and bunch up under their arms Smiley: wink

Trust me unless you have AM3 bow damage is insignificant in conparison to ranger melee damage.

At 65 with the required AA then it is worth Range combat over melee but untill then you do far more damage with 2 good weapons.

Rangers don't do any more damage than other bow users at lower levels. Tarv was quite correct.

Only at 51 (or 52) does it start to kick up with double damage on non-rooted targets. Thereafter you have all the nice things like AM (archery mastery) etc starting to turn a ranger into a high damage archer.

Beastlords also slow. Not as well as a shaman, but at the top end, it's a 65% slow.

The beastlord's ability to melee, buff, slow, and have the pet dps makes them very popular for groups (and quite good soloers).

Well, I should have said shamans get meaningful slows for their level for most of the game. My Drowsy spell at lvl 32 isn't quite making my beastlord a monster solo machine Smiley: wink You're right though, I made it sound like BSTs didn't get slows which they do, starting as young as lvl 9 or 15 (I forget).

Beastlords are good soloers, but largely because of the pet. Even a melee-oriented (rather than pet cleric) BST needs his pet to stay alive. Regardless of how sought after BST's are, I don't think they're really the same "feel" as a knight for "mix of melee and magic". They're as close as you'll get with a Barbarian, but it's not the same thing.

Well I was just trying to stick with what he could do with a barbarian magic user since he seems to have his heart set on that.

At least until that "create character" button beckons.

ahh, you didnt say that, yes i agree melee from a low ranger is better then the archery from one, but in situations where they cannot tank, damage witha bow is still good

Below about 51 there is no reason for a ranger to do any more damage than say a warrior with a bow. Their self-buffs may improve accuracy very slightly but that is about it. Believe me I've done it. You can put an awful lot of arrows into a target when skilling and not kill it. What also may make for an apparent difference is that rangers tend to go for dex and may crit more but crits are not significant.

Let me get back to the subject here and suggest a barb beastlord. They are great to play and have good melee stats plus good wis for spells.
