Based on price, playability, and entertainment factor, I'd give it an 8.

It could have a 9 if there weren't as many minor technical problems.

It would take a lot of customizing to my personal tastes to turn it into a 10. So I'll probably never see one of those.

if you have a system that can run EQ the way it is intended to be run and it acutaly works for you the game is very good and addictive.

now the company that runs and owns the game on the other hand is one of the worst when it comes to CSR and TSR (customer and technical support) and both will bold face lie to you.

that is not MHO, those are facts. have lost count how many times the SoE TSR has said the problem is your drivers after a patch and things are all of the sudden fubar, then the next day or so they run an emergency patch and everything works again. so basicaly it was not the EU drivers, hardware, or software that had caused the screwup it was SoE and their pathetic lack of knowing how to properly test things before going live with them.

if you are one of the lucky ones that never have to deal with SoE other then to pay them on a monthly basis, then the game can be great.

if you removed the bullkkrap from Sony and SoE then i would score EQ an 8, but as you do have to deal with the lieing company i rate it down to a 4, and that is the only reason i left the game after many years of playing.

in fact both times i have left the game have been due to SoE, and not due to the game it self. i still think the game is good, entertaining, and has plenty of potential. that compiled with the very good ingame community (for now at least) makes it worth playing.

i just cant deal with their lies any longer, nor can i deal with the fact they do not care about their customers, or the fact that they have chosen to ignore bugs and glitches in the game that are game crashing level for years and continue to pump out broken expansion after broken expansion with no regard for the stability of the game or the ballance of the classes.

the best thing EQ has going for it is the large player base per server. this means you can acctualy meet new ppl in the game and group with them, but more and more are turning into e-bay accounts, and or are power gamers and in either case, both are well worth avoiding. now that SoE is planning on selling ingame items for real life CASH things will get even worse IMHO.

im glad im out, and am not looking back. very happy with DAoC and CoH, and see my self extreemly happy with both for years to come.

I'd give it an 8 also.

-Graphics are sub-standard compared to competitors
-Current problems while patching us all to DX9 are frustrating

-Content and depth are second to none, best in the genre. If you are looking for a difficult, challenging way to spend some spare time, I'd recommend EQ to anyone with a modern computer.

For comparison, from the other games I've played, I'd rate:
DAoC: 5
AO: 6
AC2: 4

Do you expect unbiased opinions on an everquest board? :P
I say 8.5

I've probably go about an 8 as well. I'd give City of Heroes a 6.5 or a 7 for being fun, but not very in depth at all. I played FFXI which I'd give a 6 or a 6.5 for nice eye candy and some great ideas but very group dependant, nasty grouping limits and, again, being rather shallow in some aspects (namely equipment).

Well seeing that I am apparently the resident FanBoi I suppose I would have to rate it as a 10.

But then its not in my nature to ever give any one a perfect score, I would have to pull that back a bit, say 9.5.

But I really do think that the game has deteriorated in overall style and direction since Luclin, nothing catastrophic, but the "spirit" that existed during Velious has gone, so maybe loose another .5, back to 9.

I really dislike the PoP and later mob models. To me they are quite boring and lack the excitement and believability of the Goblins, Sarnaks, Wyverns, Dragons, etc of the earlier era. So maybe back to 8 for that.

Trying to push through a graphics platform upgrade at the same time as a major engine change was foolhardy, any program developer worth his salt will tell you that trying to bring in more than one major change at a time is a high risk proposition. SOE should know by now that it is better to hasten slowly and have broken the exercise down into smaller steps. Loose another point for that, so 7.

But, LoY, LDoN and GoD despite the niggling mob design, and encounter problems, brought in UI advancements that we didn't even dare dream about back in Kunark days. Things that have with out doubt, made the game more accessible and fun to play. Have to give 2 points for that. So 9, it seems.

It seems a high score, but even after 4 years of playing I still play 15 to 20 hours a week, week in and week out, enjoy it thoroughly and aside from the first week after the dx9 patch where I was porting underground and crashing in PoK, I have had very very few technical problems with the game.

So... 9.

Nah 8.5. With a little more effort 9 could be achieved Smiley: grin

Recently, especially considering the workload that the collision problems must be causing, I have found CS to be helpful and responsive. The new petition system works very well.

I initially found PoP mobs lacking in imagination (underbulks and lightcrawlers - again!) but some of them are incredible.

Whatever the issues the whole appeal of any game is on sustainable gameplay. EQ has that in spades. There are games with prettier graphics, better CS, more GM events etc but I keep seeing people leave, try them, and return. I think that really says it all.

Magazine/web reviews usually revolve around graphics quality and "featurelists". They don't have the time (or probably the ability) to really try a game like EQ.

I can live with Treants, guess they have to be there anyway, empty suits of armor, bleh. But those misshapen golem things that started with the Geos, well may as well just lets us see the blank envelope as far as I'm concerned.

But I have to admit there are exceptions. The Hobgoblins are great, I'd be happy to see them pop up again somewhere.

I like the frogs and hynids too, they can stay Smiley: smile

I have no experience with other games but for someone new I think EQ would rank at the very top. For the veterens I am sure the ranking drops a little. But if a person can still rank EQ 8 after 5 years I would say it brings a lot to the table. That is a very long time to hold a persons interest on the internet.

If you enjoy things that you have to really delve into and spend time figuring out then you will enjoy EQ. If you want a quick easy layout I am not sure EQ is that. Personally I really like everyday or every conversation being a mystery that I have to solve and more times it is out of the game and on boards like this. Then back into the game to find it, test it and conquer it.

I guess it is all in what your looking for and what holds your interest.

For me right now it is a 10 even with the problems. When I play I have a blast and I am one of the fortunate ones that has few problems with my equipment. When I do I simply wait for Sony to fix it even though they do think it is your equipment.

I drop $26.00 bucks a month to SOE for EQ. I figure my family utilizes 1488 hours for that cost (we all run traders). That is two pennies an hour so I guess I can't really complain if they are down 24 hours out of a month.

No you didn't miss anything. SOE never said that they would sell ingame items for cash. There was a poll that they posted that asked the player base if it would be a good idea for Sony to facilitate players making those type of transactions between players.

My guess for Sony asking this is probably to cut down on the number of petitions over hacked accounts when players wish to sell/trade accounts

I just got finished playing swg for a year and let me tell you eq blows it out of the water. Sure the graphics in swg are great but there's absolutely no content. As a matter of fact i'm resubscribing my 51wiz on rallos before the weekend.

See if you can get one of the buddy account numbers, and play it for a month. You can also get Evolutions pretty cheap (under $25) with most expansions and a free month of play. There is an update to Evolutions, but I don't know when it is to be released.

Either way - some people love EQ, some don't. It's a rich and complex game, with more content than any other. It has its flaws as well, just like every other game. So, it's really up to you to decide if it fits or not.
