Monk - please helpFollow

I am going to do a cut and paste here as I did put this into the "Monk" forum and have not gotten any replies.

I want to play this character but before I go any farther I really really need/want to know:

Okay - I created a human monk - I have only clothe armor and 2 backpacks and my weight is 13! How can I play this class and keep the weight down to the 14??

I did the tutorial and that is the only reason I have the 2nd pack. I have been running back to the merchant almost every kill - and if I kill a skeleton with a weapon it puts my weight WAY over the limit!

I also noticed that the coins weight a ton! So I have also been running (have to 'transistion') to the bank to convert the coins to plat then put most of it into the bank.

What am I doing wrong!! I am only to level 4-1/2 and have been playing for hours! With all the running back to the merchants I can't seem to get anywhere.

Can someone please help? Should I just 'grin and bare' it til lvl 5 (for training) then go to East Commons or somewhere that has spiders to get some silk for armor?

Thanks sooo much!

OK - the back packs are way too heavy. I dont know where you are playing at the moment, but find a bag merchant and buy some small 4 slot bags. The merchants near the monk guilds usually have them. Sell the large back packs or put them in your bank slots. As for the coin, don't keep the copper - it's too heavy and doesn't add enogh to your overall wealth to be worth the hassle. If you play with someone that you trust, you can have them loot everything, then divide the loot at the end of playing.

I have noticed - or rather failed to notice- that the extra weight doesn't really make a noticeable difference in ability. At least it hasn't so far. My monk is only level 26, so I don't know what the effect will be later.

As you get more wealth you can plan to buy a weight reduction backpack. A Rallic pack would be my recommendation at first. You will probably have to get sonmeone to make one for you, or find one in the bazaar. They sould sell for about 800 plat. Also a gem pouch will reduce the weight of your coin and give you another 4 slot pack. The Rallic pack is a 10 slot/giant size item pack the gives 85% weight reduction.

Enjoy your Monk - they are fun to play and in great demand for pulling at higher levels.

Actually the more weight you're carrying, the worse your AC is.

Thanks Eagle! Great info and I will sell those packs as soon as I can!

Ozricle - yeah I read that it is 14 for lower levels - that is why I was worried about what to do.

Thanks again for the info.

I wrestled with this issue myself just this weekend for my monk, who is now level 9. The trick is the lightest armor and weapons you can manage. I carry only 1 container--a large sack. If you're human and like to carry a light source for when you need it, I recommend a giant fire beetle eye instead of a lantern. Since I don't have many inventory slots, it's hard to carry lots of loot, so I try to hunt in places that have merchants nearby. The coins do weigh you down pretty fast, but such is the life of a kung fu fightin' monk.

Map,

If you're on Stromm send me a tell, I've got some nice armour, jewelery, & weapons that I've outgrown--Wu's, Shissar battlehammer, Polished Ulaks, carnellian wedding ring, etc.

If I'm not on leave a time here & we'll try to hook up.

As far as weight, the other posters have it down. My starting preference was a purse--quiet in the peanut gallery--it's the same size & capacity as a Small Bag, but it's about .01 lighter & about one silver (I think) cheaper. Perfect for 1 stack water, 1 stack rations, & 2 stacks of bandages. Or whatever you want. I left my other slots open for loot--not much alas--until I could buy a coin pouch & rallic pack.

Like I said, if you're on Stromm, lemme know & we'll get you set up. :)

The whole keeping the weight <14 is a tricky thing. To be honest, you really are better off equipping him as any other character. I've tried keeping my monk under the weight limit, and the bonus isn't near signifigant enough to warrent all the hassle that comes with it.

Ohhh Thanks for all the replies!

Joev - She is on Sromm! My first character on that server - She is "Padra" - Thank you so much for the offer! Kyuso = your ingame Monk?

Mistress - good to know! I won't worry about it as much as I have been - but keep an eye on it and not let it get tooo heavy!

Ozricle - I think I do have a beetle eye - I will check when I get back ingame - thanks!

Mappam, one thing to keep in mind is that Monks do get an AC bonus to their weight, whether they are over or under the 14 limit. Try to have one or two weight reduction bags, like the one you get from LDoN, or just keep loot to a minimum, such as things that will sell for at least a plat or two.

Monks are supposed to live an austere lifestyle...

When I started my Iksar, I did the curscale armor quests before I knew about the weight limits. For your human I think you get some light newbie-quest armor, and you can fill in the other slots with Raw Silk. Find the tailor who can make raw silk and see if they can make you a Tailored Large Bag. 6 Large Slots, WT .6 and 10% WR helps. Get quested sashes and headbands. Solo you will have to pass up heavy loot or make frequent trips to a merchant/bank. If you can swing it, in a group see if someone will loot for you and keep split off.

My standard equip was Large Tailored Bag, 1 stack of food, 1 stack of water, 2 stacks of bandages (all in the 10%WR bag). Do not carry any coins to start.

You WILL go over the weight limit, so keep an eye on AC and how often you feel you are getting hit. Dump weight accordingly.

If you get an AC buff, usually the weight limit penalty is mitigated. So if you plan on using Temp, I wouldn't worry about weight.

After Raw-silk, step up to Wu's and Acrylia Studded/Reinforced.

By then you may have some nice weight reducing bags (Rallic Pack) and some of your slots filled with WT 0.0 items.

Keep an eye out for light monk weaps too.

Map,

Apparently, we keep missing each other. I'm on the West Coast, if you want to leave a good time we can meet in-game that'd be terrific. :)
