New player looking for advice/guidance and possible guildFollow

#1 Jun 05 2004 at 10:02 AM Rating: Decent
I just downloaded the game via a buddy code and have several questions. I am a MMORPG veteran but have very little experience with EQ and the sheer vastness of the game which can be overwhelming. So if i could here are some questions:

1. What level should I leave the tutorial?
2. What is the viabilty of the bard class to solo/find groups?
3. What server would you suggest?
4. Are there any guilds that actively recruit? If so could anyone suggest a guild? I am looking for a friendly casual group.

Thanks for your time.

1. I didn't know you could level in the tutorial. When I started the tutorail was a five minute long script where you killed a couple skeletons and learned how to talk to NPCs. I would leave once you have a general feel of the game.

2. The bard class is one of the few classes that can solo extremely well and is wanted in groups (as well as guilds). Most classes are either group orientated or created towards soloing, bards can do both well.

3. I think Morden Rasp is considered the "preferred server" but that might be due to population. Some servers will be older and not have that great of a "young population" so you might lack people to hunt with. If you are playing via the buddy code, why not join your buddy's server.

4. Guilds vary by server. Choose a server then find a guild. There are many guilds that accept people of all levels.

1. Take it to level 5. It's pretty easy to do so and the exp is easy to get.

2. Bards can solo effectively. They're also effective in groups. Both of those statements, of course, depend on the skill of the player. You will find yourself doing a lot of work to keep the songs twisted. Bard is not a class for people who linke to be inactive.

3. Morden Rasp is the preferred server at the moment and seems to have more low level players than most of the others. However, you may want to play with your buddy who gave you the code.

4. A lot of guilds, especially the family type, are now recruiting lower level characters. There was a time where guilds were a lot more picky, but new blood is a lot rarer these days so they have lowered the bar a bit.

Ok I'll try to answer your questions the best I can, although I quit EQ a year ago

1. When I played, the Tutorial wasn't actaully part of the online game, it was a little demo type thing to help you learn how to do things
2. Bard was my FAVORITE class, Too many awesome things about them, They can find parties pretty easy after 20 (First Mana Regen Song), also they can lull monsters at camps making it easier to pull them single, also they can mesmerize adds, also they can buff the party with different buffs such as HASTE or STATS or HP Regen and many many more.

2.(Cont.) As for solo, Bard was one of the best solo classes there was when I played, but not until the 40s once you had a few Distant DoT songs, and it got even easier at 49 (With 2.5 min Selos song) (Selo is very fast speed incerasment, well it gets faster as you level up and depending on your DRUM)
I would just run around with Lv 49 Selos on and use DoT songs on emenies, I wouldn't be the fastest killer, BUT, I would NEVER have to rest due to the fact that I NEVER got hit (Sicne I'm so quick) (You also get a Selos song at level 5, but only lasts like 18 seconds, but is obvioulsy easy to recast, and MOST songs don't use MP)
Ther was another way I would solo ONCE in a while, called Charm Kiting I believe.. you get a buncha monsters (Not sure excatly what kind, if they are on a faction or not), charm one, send it at the group of monsters following you (As you run with selos) and they will all turn and beat the crap outta your charmed monster, when the monster is nearing death, quickly use the INVISIBLE song and the monster will be uncharmed, you then throw one or two DoT songs on it, and hes dead - I've heard this is one of the quickest ways to earn EXP, but the higher level charm songs do require small amounts of MANA

3. The server(s) I played on were
Tarew Marr
Sullon Zek (Diety Alliance PvP)

My personal favorite is the PvP one, although now its not too populated since alot of players are uber and have very powerful equipement and can knock out a newbie characther in a single blow

If your not into PVP, I would suggest one of the more populated servers, I'm not too sure on which that would be since I quit along time ago

4. I never had a hard time finding a GUILD to be in, when ever I was guildless (which wasn't too often) I would be in a new guild later that day or the next day, since alot of my friends would want me in the guilsd they are in, all the servers have differnet guilds on them so I can't erally suggest a guild w/o suggesting a server.
Most guilds ARE friendly and will help you out with lots of things, when I needed help witha quest I usually had someone else who wanted to do the quest with me. I sometimes would have Guild parties where it would just be a EXP Party from the guild, those were usually the best for me.

Enjoy

1. What level should I leave the tutorial?

I'd say ride it all the way to lvl 5. It's a smooth way to get a handle on basic game mechanics in a structured enviornment. When you're ready to move on, you'll have a leg up on the game.

2.What is the viabilty of the bard class to solo/find groups?

While the Bard class is an excellent choice for solo or group, it is also one of the hardest classes to play well. And nothing is worse than a badly played Bard!!! I would suggest that early on, you play your bard as an alt and use an easier character to learn the game with. Since you can have 8 characters per server on a single account, you don't have to delete him... I just wouldn't focus on him yet.

3. What server would you suggest?

Morden Rasp is a good choice because it is a new server and there are many many lower lvl characters there. However, because it is new, the prices on equipment bought in Bazaar (sold by other players), tend to be higher than on older more established servers.

Most guilds are recruiting... it's what they do! But I wouldn't worry about a guild right away. First, get comfortable with the basics of your class, hone your personal style of play, work up your skills, get into pick up groups, develop a friends list, learn your way around your home town and a few zones... there are MANY things to learn while you prepare for your first guild invite!

Good luck and Good hunting!

1. I think 5 is a good level to move to your home town, i have leveled 4 toons in the tutorial now <moved servers> and i am very impressed.
At 5 you can hold your own in the real newbie camps like orc hill etc so it's worth leaving then.

2. I am with Oldblue on this one bards are EXTREMELY hard to play to thier best and 90% of first char bards are not very good, thier are exceptions but you can usually tel when people are playing bards as alts having learnt the game with another charicter even at high <60+> levels.
I consider a ranger to be the best cless to learn EQ and a chanter the best for learning mid level play <more time to sit back and see what people are doing.
By all means keep the bard and learn slowly but not as a main untill you have at least 1 other high level char and really know the game.

3. Morden Rasp is theserver of choise for new players at the moment and i like the more old shcool feel of it, The guy's and galls of the forum have a guild on MR and it seems to be a good platform.
AVOID PvP like your life depends on it! it is no place to learn the game and you will more than likely be put of within a week it's not a pleasent experiance.

4. the Guild on MR are is slowly recruiting have a look at the site for Aude Sapere.

Some notes about the tutorial thay may help you decide when to leave.

At level 4 almost everything is blue (meaning it still gives you XP).

At level 5 the spiders and rats turn green (no more XP)

At level 6 Most kobolds turn green. Only Named and Taskmasters still give XP.

At level 7 Taskmasters and most named turn green. Only Slavemaster Ruga and Spider Tamer Gugan still give XP. Things of course dramatically slow down at this point.

At level 8 only Slavemaster Ruga will still give XP.

The best thing about the tutorial is the charm which you get without killing anything. Many experienced players leave right after getting max stats on the charm.

The only other upgrades you can get are weapons. One comes from a common drop from normal kobolds and the other comes from a drop from Slavemaster Ruga. To get the upgrade take the chunk of bronze or iron and give it to Absor near the forge.

If you have a friend on the server you pick who can give you some equipment I would recommend leaving as soon as you get the charm and make a backpack of rat steaks. If you don't I would say stick around to level 5 or 6 and get the final weapon upgrade before you go.

If I were starting EQ without a friend to level with I would at least start on a non-PVP server till you get the hang of it. On RZ the home towns are dead so very few people there to give you guidance. The hot XP spots are overrun by deleveled tweeked 65 toons now playing level 10.

If you are interested in a PVP server remake a toon there after you get to know the game or it will be very frustrating trying to stay alive between the mobs and the pk'rs.

Prime example....A 53 Cleric and myself a 61 Necro went with my son a 11 Cleric to Kurns Tower to help him get up enough levels to LDON which buffers him somewhat from the pk'rs. 20 minutes into it here comes your typical deleveled tweek that interfers. He knows he can't kill my son because we have a cleric but it really isn't at all about PVP. His entire intent was to prevent anyone from playing the game. As he stated I am only here to prevent you from leveling. We dealt with him for about 45 minutes force feeding XP to my son while he stayed alive from the PK'r then we went elsewhere. So like I said unless you have a friend on a PVP server or you have a ton of patience learn the game elsewhere before coming to RZ.
